New Parking Lot We are pleased to announce the new parking area south of the original parking lot is now available for use. Stripes will not be painted until spring to mark the proper parking spaces. Please park in the new lot as though it were a con-tinuation of the present lot, going south. Parking for the new lot will be in the same format with vehicles head-to-head in the new parking lot as is done in the original park-ing lot. Funding for this parking lot came about as a result of the funds which were returned to the parish from the diocesan capital campaign, "Moving Forward in Faith and Hope". Thanks again to all our parishioners who gener-ously supported the capital campaign, and thanks again to Mark and Emily Allen who chaired that campaign. That campaign will continue for a year or so until people have had an opportunity to fulfill their pledges. With the new parking lot now available for parking, please refrain from parking on the grass beside the south drive-way . Also, please refrain from parking in front of the rec-tory garages on Sunday morning. Father Reynolds has had a difficult time twice in recent weeks trying to maneuver around cars parked in the rectory driveway so as to be able to leave for Mass in Colfax in a timely manner.

CCHD was founded to end the cycle of poverty throughout America by funding organizations that help individuals help them-selves. With a tradition of improving education, housing, and community economic development, CCHD continues to make a positive impact in communities nation wide. De-fend Human dignity. Take poverty of the map. Please give to the CCHD Collection.

“May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God.” Are you being called to love the Lord with an undivided heart as a priest, deacon or in the consecrated life? Call Fr. Thom Hennen, diocesan vocations director at 563-324-1911, or write: HennenT@ diodav.org.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings

In today’s second reading we hear Saint Paul urging the members of the community at Thessalonica to direct their hearts to God’s love through Christ. He wants them to be laser-focused on Christ, and nothing else. He desires that they be strengthened by the Lord and shielded from what is not Christ-like.

Good stewards cultivate a “laser-sharp” focus on Christ; not on things that could give them false or super-ficial images or ideals. Let’s think about our own daily focus: Do we direct out hearts toward Christ or are there other “gods” that claim our attention? Our career? Material possessions? Sexuality? Favorite sports team? Political leanings? Does our daily life point to Christ so that those who are younger and less mature in their faith learn from our example?

Wedding Anniversary Blessings Sacred Heart Church wishes to honor couples of the parish who are celebrat-ing wedding anniversary milestones (every 5 years— 5 years, 10 years, 15 years, and so on). Please complete the form available at the church office or

on the website under “Family Life”. The deadline to be included in the bulletin is the 15th of the month before your anniversary.

In The Catholic Messenger this week (November 7):

The world’s bishops are being asked to take a look at how effective pastoral and educational programs have been at promoting Church teaching on sexuality, marriage and family life.

Supporters of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) are urging support for the

anti-poverty campaign in a letter addressed to the nation’s bishops, who meet Nov. 11-14. Youths from across the Davenport Diocese share their enthusiasm for the National Catholic Youth Confer-

ence (NCYC), and why they plan to participate in this year’s biennial event. Year of Faith profile: Hannah Zimmerman, a 22-year-old grad student at the U of I, finds hope through faith

and says her Catholic faith reminds her that there is something greater than her. Some 255 women participated in a Women’s Conference at St. Patrick Parish in Iowa City this past weekend

to explore what it means to be women of faith in this Year of Faith. Four priests in our diocese celebrated milestone anniversaries this year. Read their profiles. Deacon Derick Cranston (pastoral associate for the Richmond, Riverside, Wellman parishes) explores in his

column how suffering transforms the work of art that is our life. The Internet will host the parish community of the future, a Vatican official says. “The digital parish will be

where people cluster around shared interests and shared ideas.” Pope Francis waxes eloquent on the sacrament of marriage during a Year of Faith celebration on family life

and declares that saints aren’t superheroes; they just never left God’s side. On the Opinions Page: Fr. Ron Rolheiser reflects on the value of celibacy and the single life; Fr. Robert Bar-

ron defines who God is and who God is not! Thank you for your support. Please let us know of any stories, ideas or suggestions you’d like to share with The Catholic Messenger!

Scrap iron, machinery, cars, trucks, industrial scrap, aluminum, brass, copper, catalytic converters, insulated wire, lead, batteries, electric motors, radiator, stainless steel, etc. Sacred Heart Youth will take it! The youth are fund raising to go to the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis, IN this November. There will be a roll off container available November 9-10 in the Sacred Heart Church parking lot to collect any scrap steel donations. If you prefer not to haul it yourself, we will pick it up! Marriage Moments & Parenting Pointers Do you really believe in the resurrection of the dead as Jesus proclaimed in Luke 20:38? Even if you and your beloved are still young, have you talked about your deaths? Consider both practical issues like medical/funeral decisions and faith issues. Do you believe in an afterlife? Ian (age 3) was drinking some milk when he got the hiccups. He said, "Please don't give me this milk again. It makes my teeth cough." Sometimes our kids say the cutest things. What's a silly thing your own child has said? Thank God for the humor they bring to your life.

dear Padre Are eulogies supposed to be given at funeral Masses?

I was taught that eulogies are not to be given at funeral Masses. Well, I’ve

been to many Catholic funerals, and each included a eulogy. Did the rule change?

Practice and rules vary from dio-cese to diocese and even from par-ish to parish. However, according to the 2002 General Instruction of the Roman Missal, “At the Funeral Mass there should, as a rule, be a short homily, but never a eulogy of any kind” (382). The Order of Chris-tian Funerals says the same thing (141).

A homily is a talk about the Scripture readings that pus the focus on Jesus and his work of saving us from sin and death by his resurrec-tion. A eulogy is a talk about the deceased person — a biography of sorts. This really isn’t appropriate for a Catholic funeral Mass, which is a celebration of the de-ceased’s eternal life with God rather than a celebration of his or her earthly life.

The Order of Christian Funerals allows a family member or friend to speak about the deceased after Communion (170). Often referred to as workds of re-membrance, the idea is for one person to speak for no more than a few minutes about how the deceased per-son lived his or her faith.

A better place for a traditional eulogy and for family and friends to celebrate the life of the deceased person is at the wake or at a post-funeral gathering.

“First World problems” is a phrase that’s come into common use. It describes what we in a country of privilege see as challenges that pale in comparison to the serious, life-threatening problems of people in other countries. First World problems include computer crashes that destroy all your documents, a stylist coloring your hair two shades darker than ususal, or having to send French fries back because you ordered a salad. Yes, some are particularly challenging, but they aren’t on the scale of surviving war or trying to afford basic daily food. The Sadducees in today’s Gospel are concerned with “First Life” problems. They’re using an earthly is-sue to challenge Jesus’ teaching on resurrection. Jesus doesn’t engage int heir game-playing; he says earthly con-cerns like marriage aren’t the concerns of the “Second Life” - the life of resurrection. He doesn’t give details about this life, simply assuring them that God has promised it: “to God, all are alive.” Though we might not test Jesus like the Sadducees tried to, we do have questions about resurrected life. What will it be like? Who will be there? How will it compare to life here on earth? We try to imagine life after death with our limited minds, but resurrected life is beyond our ability to comprehend while we’re in our First

Life. We’re called to trust in our cove-nant relationship with God — a rela-tionship that continues beyond death. Jesus reminds us, “God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” We do know one thing about resurrected life: We’ll be alive with God. And nothing can be better than that.
