FEAST OF FAITH

What Jesus Did, What Jesus Said The oldest account of what happened at the Last Supper comes to us not from the Gospels but from the First Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians: “I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread, and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, ‘This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me’ ” (11:23–24). In our celebrations of the Eucharist, we are obedient to Christ’s command to “do this.” The priest, acting in the person of Christ, does what Jesus did and says what Jesus said. He takes bread, gives thanks, breaks it, and gives it to the Lord’s disciples. He takes wine, gives thanks, shares it with us. We believe that the entire Eucharistic Prayer is consecratory, but we continue to hold these words of Jesus in special reverence. They are called the words of consecration, and the elevations of the host and chalice, the genuflections of the priest, and the optional ringing of a bell and use of incense remind us that we are in the presence of the Lord. —Corinna Laughlin, © Copyright, J. OUR LADY OF THE HAMPTOS

This summer has been very exciting as construction for the new wellness center-classroom extension has been moving along. The foundation is now in process, with steel expected in mid-September. This project will provide four additional classrooms as well as a full gymnasium with suspended running track. The first stages of the project have been funded totally by foundation grants, family and local fund-raising efforts. The school community of OLH is actively seeking additional donors and sponsors for the Wellness Center—Classroom extension. The completion of the building, expected in late spring 2012, will depend upon the ability of the school to raise an additional $700,000 over the coming months. There are several memorial opportunities available in this gymnasium-four classroom extension. There are brochures available at the doors of the church. Anyone wishing to make a donation toward this effort is asked to contact the school at 283-9140. The new school year will begin on Wednesday, September 7, when OLH welcomes its largest student body of 360 students for orientation. The year will begin officially with the opening school liturgy on Friday, September 9 at 10 AM at Our Lady of Poland Church. Pre-school is the time when 3 & 4 year olds begin the solid foundation of their elementary education. Our Lady of the Hamptons hosts a fully licensed program taught by certified professional teachers at St. Rosalie’s Parish Center in Hampton Bays. There is still room in both the morning and afternoon sessions. Please contact the school 283-9140 for a brochure and information leading to registration.

PREPARIG FOR THE EW TRASLATIO OF THE MASS

The Liturgy of the Eucharist

On the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011, Catholic parishes in the United States will begin praying the texts of the Mass using a new English translation of The Roman Missal. This week, we explore the Liturgy of the Eucharist. We begin by preparing the altar for the holy sacrifice to come. In the Prayer over the Gifts we get ready to offer ourselves and our lives together with the bread and wine so that we too might be transformed by God. In the Preface Dialogue we declare that it is right and just to give thanks to the Lord our God, and in the Preface we proclaim the reasons that we give God our thanks and praise. Then comes the great Eucharistic Prayer by which we render our thanks and praise to God the Father. As we recall what Jesus said and we do what he did at the Last Supper, God transforms the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ, and we pray that we will also be transformed by the Eucharist we celebrate and receive. We ratify this wonderful action with the Great Amen, and prepare for the culmination of the Liturgy of the Eucharist in Holy Communion. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

KID’S PAGE Prayers and history of the Church ______________________ August 29, 2011 Today we remember the death of St. John the Baptist. John told people to be sorry for their sins and to turn to God with all their hearts. He baptized them as a sign of God’s forgiveness. John bravely told King Herod and his family that they, too, were sinful. King Herod had John put in prison. Today’s reading continues the story of John. This is a day to consider how governments sometimes ignore the rights of citizens and act with great injustice. Reading Mark 6:21-25, 26-28

Listen to the words of the holy gospel according to Mark. Herod gave a great birthday celebration for himself and invited his officials, his army officers, and the leaders of Galilee. The daughter of Herodias (her-ROW-dee-us) came in and danced for Herod and his guests. She pleased them so much that Herod said, “Ask for anything, and it’s yours! I swear that I will give you as much as half of my kingdom, if you want it.” The girl left and asked her mother, “What do you think I should ask for?” Her mother answered, “The head of John the Baptist!” The girl hurried back and told Herod. The king was very sorry for what he had said. But he did not want to break the promise he had made in front of his guests. At once he ordered a guard to cut off John’s head there in prison. The guard put the head on a platter and took it to the girl. The gospel of the Lord. Reflection: Do I become angry at people who tell me I am wrong? Do I try to get back at people? Do I sometimes say or do things just to show off?

August 28, 2011 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

______________________

August 31, 2010 On this day of August we remember Saints Joseph of Arimathea (a-ruh-muh-THEE-uh) and Nicodemus. They were wealthy, important men in Jerusalem. After the death of Jesus, Joseph obtained his body from Pilate and bought fine linen to wrap it in. Nicodemus bought a quantity of expensive spices, and together they buried the body in a tomb that belonged to Joseph. Today’s reading is a conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus about baptism. Reading John 3:3-8

Listen to the words of the holy gospel according to John Jesus said, “I tell you for certain that you must be born from above before you can see God’s kingdom!” Nicodemus asked, “How can a grown man ever be born a second time?” Jesus answered, “I tell you for certain that before you can get into God’s kingdom, you must be born not only by water, but by the Spirit. Humans give life to their children. Yet only God’s Spirit can change you into a child of God. Don’t be surprised when I say that you must be born from above. Only God’s Spirit gives new life. The Spirit is like the wind that blows wherever it wants to. You can hear the wind, but you don’t know where it comes from or where it is going.” The gospel of the Lord.

Prayer: Blessed are you, Lord God. On the day of our baptism, you brought us new life Through water and the Holy Spirit, Help us to live each day as your children. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
