THE NEWTON CATHOLIC BOOK CLUB The January Book Club Selection is Pope Francis’ message: “ Nonviolence: A Style of Politics for Peace”. The Pope argues that nonviolent action for peace is gospel teaching and an effective solution for today’s conflicts. This is the first time a Pope has made this argument. The January meeting will be on Thursday, January 26th, 7:00 PM, in the Colella room at Our Lady’s. The text is widely available for download. Several copies are available at Our Lady’s. Call Ed Desmond at Our Lady’s Parish Office to reserve a copy. For more information about the book club contact Jim Allaire at 617-244-2143. SACRED HEART HISTORY: THE CANDLE AND THE POPE Ever wonder about the candle in the glass case by the choir? Go look at it and check out the bronze plaque inscribed: “MY DAYS IN THE SACRED HEART CHURCH

NEWTON CENTER, WILL ALWAYS BE AMONG THE DEAREST

RECOLLECTIONS FROM MY VISIT TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”

EUGENE CARDINAL PACELLI SECRETARY OF STATE

TO HIS HOLINESS POPE PIUS XI OCTOBER 13, 14, 15, 16, 1936

In October 1936, the Vatican Secretary of State, Eugenio Cardinal Pacelli visited the United States, probably to look into the activities of Father Charles E. Coughlin, a controversial Detroit priest and radio host who was opposing the New Deal and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s re-election campaign. The cardinal spent a few days with his old friend, Bishop Spellman, saying Mass at Sacred Heart and visiting St. John’s Seminary, Boston College, and Sacred Heart Academy, eventually called Sacred Heart School. Bishop Spellman accompanied Cardinal Pacelli to a meeting with President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Because of the upcoming election and the purpose of the cardinal’s visit, press coverage of

the meeting was a matter of great concern. The potential for embarrassment to both the president and the church was considerable, so Cardinal Pacelli depended heavily on his “American expert.” The bishop did not fail him. His instincts were sure and his performance flawless. Two and a half years later, when Cardinal Pacelli became Pope Pius XII, most people realized that their pastor would not be at Sacred Heart much longer. On April 23, 1939, they learned that he was to be Archbishop of New York.

AN INVITATION FROM THE SACRED HEART HISTORY GROUP Why not join the Sacred Heart History Group! During 2017 we begin celebrating the 125th anniversary of the parish. Our main interest is to bring the history of the parish up to date. First, we go back to the early stories of the parish starting with 1890! We do research on the window, the donors, and the early members of the parish. We would like to bring the history of the parish up to date by interviewing long time parishioners for their memories and recollection. So if you are a history buff, interested in visiting long time members of the parish, or ARE a long time member of the parish - think about joining us; you have much to offer. There will be a celebration in the early summer near the Feast of the Sacred Heart so please think of joining our group to have input and give ideas for the celebration. Connect with Joe Sanroma at [email protected] or Kathie Long at [email protected] or call the parish office.

FORUM ON NON-VIOLENCE AND JUST PEACE Join Dr. Lisa Sowle Cahill, Professor of Theology at Boston College, for her first hand reflections on last April's Vatican symposium on Nonviolence and Just Peace, which recommended that the Catholic Church drop its teaching of "Just War Theory." The forum will take place on Sunday February 5th, 3:00pm at Our Lady's Church, lower halls. See the Collaborative online calendar for a full description. INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY If Newton schools are closed or delay opening, there will be no morning Mass celebrated at either SH or OLHC. For weekend information, check TV Channel 5 for possible cancellation. This is for the safety of those who attend Mass and it allows us to clear the parking lot and stairways. If the scheduled Mass has an announced intention, the intention will be rescheduled at the next available Mass.

SIGNINGS Fr. Shawn sent exciting news from Charlotte, North Carolina where he was attending Pastoral Week 2017 “Highway to Heaven”. He has been elected president of the National Catholic Office for the Deaf for the next two years May 1, 2017 to April 30, 2019. We offer our congratulations even as we bemoan that this will likely require more of his precious time. QUESTIONS TO PONDER FROM TODAY’S

GOSPEL 1. As soon as Jesus heard that John was arrested he immediately moved into Herod’s territory and began an intense program teaching, healing and preaching repentance. What would cause him to make such a dangerous move? Are you able to stand up and get involved for what is right when you see that you will suffer pain or loss when you do? What do you think of Jesus when he acts like this? 2. Do you think Jesus also needed friends? “At once they left their nets and followed him.” How long did it take Peter and Andrew to respond to his invitation to a personal encounter? What do you think was going on in their heads and hearts? Could they have been excited by the mission of communicating life to others?
