Soldiers Died and C.W.G.C. record four men from the 1st K.S.L.I. killed on this day but it is likely that Pte. Penny was one of the three killed in the post because he is one of three buried next to each other in Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe Ref.I. O. 20. The 6th K.S.L.I. relieved the 5th K.S.L.I. during the night of 11th/12th February from trenches facing Pilckem in the northern part of the Ypres Salient and on the Canal bank (not very far from where the explosion of a shell killed two workmen and injured two others). There may have been more noise then normal due to the fact that many of the men exchanged greetings, at any rate the Germans decided to shell the line, and attacked Trench F35 (held by the 12th R.B.) about 2 a.m. on the 12th Feb. The shell fire continued for a day or so afterwards. Wounded about 25th September 1916. WYLDE IN MEMORY A JOINT PROJECT between Shropshire Wildlife Trust, Ludford Park Meadow of Remembrance and the Community. To research life during WW1in the Parish of Ludford, a small village on the outskirts of Ludlow, mentioned in The Doomsday book making Ludford older than Ludlow itself. To create a Remembrance Garden of wildflowers including a memorial stone inscribed with the names of all the men who served from the parish, making it different from most war memorials, which are only for those who died. The men who were lucky enough to return were scarred for life either physically or mentally and should also be honoured. The Parish Boundary at that time was slightly different to today, yet still had some peculiarities e.g. the only property in Rock Lane to be in Ludford Parish was Rock Cottage, the remainder were in the Parish of East Hamlet. Records show that Temeside, sometimes known as Waterside was taken out of Ludford Parish and put into the M.B. of Ludlow in November 1911. ABOUT SHROPSHIRE WILDLIFE TRUST Shropshire Wildlife Trust is a charity (No 212744) dedicated to the conservation of Shropshire’s native species and habitats. We support the Friends of Whitcliffe Common to manage Whitcliffe Common and Ludford Park Meadow of Remembrance is closely associated with Shropshire Wildlife Trust. For every plot sold on this green burial site 10% is donated directly to the Trust. This has raised £5,182 (+ gift aid) since May 2009 to help wildlife and wild places in Shropshire. We’re proud to support the creation of a new wildflower meadow and memorial to honour the men who served in World War One from Ludford.
