This session focuses on fundamental numerical (1D and 3D CFD) and experimental research in the areas of heat and mass transfer and fluid flowthat impacts engine and vehicle performance and design. Subject areas include convection, conduction, radiation, porous media, phase changeincluding boiling, condensation, melting and freezing. Application areas include, combustion, emissions, cooling, lubrication, exhaust, intake, fueldelivery, external air flow, under hood and under body. Fundamental papers describing unique thermodynamic processes or physical chemistryrelevant to engine combustion and fuels are also welcome. Papers focused on waste heat recovery technologies should be submitted to HX102/103.

This session covers engine combustion control and optimization techniques. Topics include engine combustion diagnostics as specialized for control,control methodologies and algorithms, optimization, related combustion sensing, etc.

This session is concerned with issues surrounding auto-ignition and knocking combustion in Spark Ignition (SI) engines. Emphasis is placed upon thedirect effects of such combustion in modern SI engines operating with current or future fuels.

In his role, Ron is responsible for the delivery of engines, transmissions, drivelines and associated systems for all Jaguar Land Roverproducts. Most recently this has included a new 380HP supercharged V6 engine for the F-Type and other Jaguar Land Rover vehicles. Ron hasbeen instrumental in developing the new family of advanced, low emission, 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines which will be built at Jaguar LandRover's &pound;500m state-of-the-art advanced Engine Manufacturing Centre. Ron became Chief Engineer for Jaguar Powertrain in 1999 and in2001 became Group Chief Engineer for Jaguar and Land Rover Powertrain.<div class="wrapup"></div><p></p>

Mixed mode with auto ignition but inhomogeneous charge. Injection-controlled but with EOI before SOC. Papers describing experiments and testdata, simulation results focused on applications, fuel/additive effects, combustion control, and PPC injection strategies are invited and will be placed inappropriate sub-sessions. Papers with an emphasis on the modeling aspects of combustion are encouraged to be submitted into PFL110 or PFL120modeling sessions.

Responding to global challenges on global climate changes, new fuel economy and greenhouse gas targets to minimize global warming are keydrivers for light and heavy duty vehicle development around the world. The emerging powertrain technology changes are critical to meet these targetswhich will generate unique challenges and opportunities for emission control systems. Driven by a growing understanding and concern of the healthimpacts of vehicle emissions, the trends for global regulations on vehicle emissions will continue to tighten. Future emission control solutions mustconsider their impacts on both traditional auto emission pollutants, as well as greenhouse gases. This proposed panel presentation will focus onseveral emerging powertrain and after treatment technology trends within the exhaust emission control industry for both heavy duty and light-dutyapplications. Specific emissions challenges faced by engine and vehicle manufacturers will be addressed through this modern technology on exhaustemission controls into powertrain system solutions. <strong>Featured Speaker</strong>: Wolfgang Warnecke, Chief Scientist, Shell<p></p><strong>Dr.Wolfgang Warnecke</strong> appointed to as Shell's <strong><em>Chief Scientist for Mobility</em></strong> since early 2011. <p></p>The 10 Chief Scientists in the Shell organisation, reporting directly to the CTO, are leading the Shell Group Technologies, ranging from Geology tofinished Fuels and Oils.The Chief Scientist role for Wolfgang Warnecke is covering all technology developments in transport, related to fuels and lubricants and all issues onMobility directions, ranging from Marine, Rail and Aviation to Off- and On-Road incl. Motorsport.<p></p>In addition to his Chief Scientist role, Wolfgang is also <strong><em>Senior Technology Manager for longer term Fuels Development &Innovation</em></strong> in Shell. <br />And since 1998 he is also the <strong><em>Head of Shell's Technology Centre in Hamburg</em></strong>, Germany, which specialises in fuels andlubricants development and engine, vehicle and marine technologies.<p></p>Wolfgang was born in 1956 in Hamburg, Germany. After studying Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Hannover (specialising inautomotive combustion engines), he gained a PhD in Automotive Engineering from Hamburg University in 1987. <p></p>Joining Shell in 1987, Wolfgang started his career as a scientist in the field of lubricant development and engine testing in Hamburg. He then movedto work as a senior scientist at Shell's UK technology centre before returning to Hamburg to head up lubricants development and engine testing. Subsequent assignments in Shell's Business units included Lubricants Technical Services in Germany or Fuels Marketing in London. <br />After leading both Automotive Fuels and Lubricants development for the Hamburg laboratory, finally he took over the global Shell Group responsibilityfor Automotive Lubricants Technology, and, more recently, for the Automotive Fuels Development. <p></p>Wolfgang's expertise in engine technology and automotive products has earned him extensive recognition across the automotive manufacturingindustry as well as by academia. In 2005, Wolfgang, together with Dr Wolfgang Steiger of Volkswagen were awarded the 'Professor Ferdinand Porsche Prize', considered by many tobe one of the world's most prestigious award for automotive engineers, for their work on synthetic fuels development. He also is closely linked with theworld leading auto industry, from engine manufacturer to key supplier, ranging from US, EU to Asia.<p></p>Wolfgang is married with one son. His '<strong>Passion for Mobility</strong>' and the automotive industry extend into his free time across the family,and he enjoys motorsports and collecting and restoring cars and bikes setting technical milestones. He also enjoys skiing, snowboarding, mountainbiking and being outdoor.

This technical session will focus on internal combustion engine emissions on board measurement and control.
