7 Things To Do You Mustn’t Miss Whilst On Your South

Africa Luxury Safari

Safari in South Africa - safari as described in the dictionary says, “an overland

expedition …”, so we have taken poetic licence to include many excursions overland

to see spectacular sights. Here in no particular order are our top 7 things to do in

South Africa guide.

Idea 1 - Swim with the Penguins. A sight not to be missed!

African Penguins living alongside humans on Boulders

beach. Share your swim in the warmer Indian Ocean waters

with these special birds who take it all in their stride.

Boulders Beach is on the Indian Ocean on the way down to

Cape Point and is therefore a good stopping off point on the

long journey down the spine of Table Mountain to the point

where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet.

A few kilometres down the road towards Cape Point is the

Black Marlin Restaurant, perched above the rocks

overlooking the sea. Superb fish menu, great service and spectacular views! You are

guaranteed a wonderful meal – one word of caution, do book before you go. It’s a

very popular restaurant. Find them at www.blackmarlin.co.za or telephone on +27

(21) 786 1621.

Idea 2 - Walk or be whisked

up Table Mountain. Don’t

forget to take warm clothing

even on the hottest day, as the

air is very much cooler up

there. The views from the

cable car and the top are

breathtaking.

The mountain needs to be

without its “table cloth” to

experience the best views –

right down to Cape Point on a clear day! Hikes abound on the mountain, but make

sure you go equipped with the right information, as it can be dangerous.

Get great information on whether the cable car is in operation, temperature and

weather at the top and lots more from the official Table Mountain site,

www.tablemountain.net.

Idea 3 - Drive along the Panorama Drive

and pass through God’s Window! What

more could you wish for than to see the

most dramatic of scenery on this drive

through Mpumalanga north of

Johannesburg through the Blyde River

Canyon.

The majestic cliffs plunge over 700 meters

to the Lowveld below stretching all the way

to Mozambique in one direction and the

Kruger National Park in the other.

The Blyde River Canyon itself is 16 km

long and is well-known for its outstanding

natural beauty.

Don’t forget to take in Bourke’s Luck

Potholes, the Three Rondavels and The Pinnacle along the route.

Idea 4 – Soweto and Robben Island. Soweto really is an experience not to be missed

and is definitely a place you must visit for yourself to make up your own mind.

The South Western Township or Soweto as it is better known is a sprawling mass of

housing outside Johannesburg with an almost tangible lifeblood of its own. Discover

the true story of Hector Pietersen at the Apartheid Museum and what really did

happen on those riots back in 1976.

You can follow the path of the riots from their early stages through to the shooting of

Hector Pietersen on that fateful day and discover what has happened since to this

notorious township.

Robben Island is best known for being Nelson

Mandela’s prison for all those years, but has a

fascinating history apart from this. Ravaged by

the wild winter seas, baking hot in summer, it is

an inhospitable outcrop you will not want to

miss!

Booking is a must in high season and you will

find a wealth of information and be able to book

online at their website, www.robben-island.org.za.

Idea 5 - The Otter Trail through Tsitsikamma Forest. Take

the hike through the most spectacular of scenery along the

rugged coastline with secluded valleys and deep river gorges

plunging down to the sea.

Choose between smaller day hikes or longer ones where you

overnight in the forest amongst the trees.

Watch out for the numerous birds including the Emerald Cuckoo,

Knysna and olive Woodpecker, Chorister Robin and Grey

Cuckooshrike.

Idea 6 – Cape Towns Famous

Wine Route. Even if you are

not a wine lover, a visit to these

wonderful estates is a glorious

experience not to be missed.

The tremendous soaring

mountains, clear air and

spectacular scenery is reason

enough, but take the time to

stroll around the lovely estate

manor houses and you will not

be disappointed.

If you do like wine, you will

delight in the endless choice of

estate, wines and grapes! A little

bit of research here will go a long

way to planning your own personal

wine route extravaganza. eWine is

a one-stop online information

guide to wine estates and wine in

South Africa.

Idea 7 - Kruger National Park. No trip to South Africa

would be complete without a visit to this territory the size

of Wales. Rich in both flora and fauna, this truly is a

national park for everyone and offers a unique experience

whether you stay in a tent or on one of the many luxury

safari lodges.

Your aim is to find the Big 5 - elephant, lion, rhino, Cape

buffalo and leopard. These really are the cream of the crop,

but you will also see a number of other animals and birds

along the way. Each time you see these animals in the wild

is a thrill.

Make sure that you take full advantage of your guide on your

game drive. Their knowledge and love of their subject can

show you untold gems.

in the wide open spaces of this magnificent country.
