Hazard Highlight: Beat the Heat!

Summer is here and so is the Texas heat and humidity! Almost all of our projects are outdoors and

there are so many outdoor ac vi es to enjoy during the summer but as temperatures rise, so does the

risk of dehydra on, heat exhaus on, heat stroke and other heat related illnesses. Without proper

safety strategies, exposure to heat can cause serious illness and even death.

Who is at Risk?

The simple answer is EVERYONE is at risk from heat stress and other heat related illness. However,

infants and young children, people 65 and older, people how are ill or have chronic health condi ons

and people who are overweight are in a higher risk

category for being effected by the heat.

Signs to Look For

Some symptoms to watch for that indicate heat

associated illness are:

Altered behavior (confusion, anxiety, sleepi-

ness, etc.)

Faintness or dizziness

Rapid, weak pulse

Li le or no urina on (the darker the urine the

more dehydrated the person is)

Muscle cramps

Loss of consciousness

What Can You Do to Stay Safe?

When you know you are going to be outside in the

heat, you should start hydra ng the day before! Never depend on thirst to tell you when you need to

drink water...when you are thirsty, you are probably already beginning to dehydrate. Drink 8-10 glass-

es of water per day. Sports drinks are good hydra on choices but coffee, cola and energy drinks should

be avoided. They can actually increase urine produc on and cause dehydra on.

Take breaks to rest and cool down when you need to. Listen to your

body!

Watch out for your coworkers and family. We should all remind each

other to hydrate and keep an eye on each other for visible signs of heat

As COVID 19 continues to be present and impact our daily lives it is important that we do not be-come complacent to our current conditions and that we remain focused on safe practices. To protect ourselves and our coworkers, it is so important that we make sure we are practicing social distancing and wearing masks when appro-priate. By doing our part, we contribute to keep-ing the economy going and making sure our jobsites continue to run smoothly. We are all in this together, so it’s our job to make sure we are safe and others around us are safe.
