In 2005 alone over 82,000 lives were lost and the economic damage of fl oods, wind storms, earthquakes and health epidemics worldwide was well over US$150billion.1 A single terrorist attack, such as the London bombings killed 57 with an estimated cost of US$3.8 billion.2 To protect our communities, government organizations and emergency agencies need to be ‘people-ready’. By that we mean that staff need access to smart tools and accurate information so that they can assess a situation quickly and accurately, and respond appropriately.

In an emergency it all comes down to people. Are yours ready?

To provide a safer, healthier environment for today’s citizens and reduce the fi nancial and human impact of disasters requires readiness. And that means giving your people – from intelligence operatives and government offi cials through to police, customs offi cers, fi refi ghters, medical and ambulance crews – the tools to prepare for disasters as well as mitigate, respond and recover from them.

Recognizing that technology can play a key part in this, Microsoft has designed a vision and a platform architecture specifi cally to help meet the requirements of people working within emergency agencies and government organizations.

It’s about secure borders and transportationOur vision enables authorities to monitor and protect borders and ports by managing and tracking cargo shipments from the point of departure, accessing a complete picture of traveler information and accurately identifying and providing alerts regarding suspect behavior patterns.

It’s about sharing intelligence By seamlessly incorporating and securely sharing intelligence, surveillance, analytics and threat predictions between government organizations and emergency agencies, authorities can be alerted to potential and emerging threats in order to prepare for, prevent or mitigate their impact.

It’s about empowering emergency staffWhen events unfold, government agencies and fi rst responders are able to seamlessly communicate and collaborate across a range of devices to share up-to-date information so that they can make informed, accurate decisions and deploy resources more effectively.

It’s about effective crisis managementFrom the emergency operations center to the government department, the response team and the remote expert, authorized staff are able to securely share current information giving them the situational awareness they need for effective command and control.

It’s about critical infrastructure protectionTo effectively safeguard communities from terrorism and cybercrime, both the critical transport infrastructure and digital systems on which government and emergency agencies depend are protected through multi-layered security options.

It’s about integrated justiceAnd fi nally, justice systems are completely integrated so that agencies can share critical data and connect information, people, systems, and devices securely to streamline procedures and reduce expenses.
