Procedures for District Codes

Procedure: When reporting a code you may use the telephone, a walkie-talkie, or

the intercom to contact the office and the appropriate individuals. Clearly state:

Your name

The type of code

Location of the incident

Standard District Codes

Code Red - FULL LOCKDOWN (Imminent Threat to Facility)

Imminent threat to the facility No movement in the building other than by police/fire

officials and persons designated by them. (See back for Lockdown procedures)

Code Yellow - LOCKDOWN

Teachers and students cannot leave the classroom. Teachers can still teach their lessons

in the classroom. No movement in the building other than by CRT members and others

specifically authorized. Teachers can still teach

Code Brown – Threat/Incident within the facility when the best course of action is to

implement the school Shelter-In-Place place. (Examples- Accidental chemical or toxin

release or chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and high yield explosive)

Code Blue – MEDICAL EMERGENCY

Incident when the best course of action is to notify SAFE Team.

Code Orange - EVACUATION (Fire Drill)

All persons leave the building according to established routes or according to specific

instructions. An evacuation map with primary and secondary routes identified should be

placed in each room. Our Command Post will be T.B.A.

Code Black - BOMB THREAT Critical Incident

Key Issue: Electrical signals may trigger explosive devices.

No Communication on radio, cell phones, and radios immediately.

Leave all lights, fans, etc. as they are, on or off.

Use of the intercom, bells and tones may be discontinued.

In the case of CODE BLACK evacuation, do not turn on or off lights or fans, etc.

Code Green - All Clear

Depending upon the situation, one or more of the following will be initiated:

Evacuation to the Lauderhill Mall (See maps for evacuation route and locations

assigned within the Mall).

EVACUATION Procedures 1. Have students take only items of possession, ex. Bookbag (This procedure applies

only in a Code Black situation).

2. Staff should direct all students to exit the building(s)

3. Classes in Building 2 will evacuate via NW 14 St. and classes in Building 3 will

evacuate via NW 16th St.

4. Bathroom stops are not permitted.

5. Office staff will transport medication to triage location.

6. DPC/Office Manager will transport black box with emergency dismissal

information to command center near the stage at the Lauderhill Mall.

Code of Yellow LOCKDOWN Procedures Lockdown signal is given.

Quickly spot-check the hallway outside your door. Any children walking by should

come immediately into your room.

Lock doors.

Close windows and blinds (if applicable).

Post the green sign in the window portion of your door, if all is well. Post the red

card in the window, if there is a problem requiring police assistance and or serious

medical attention. If no card is displayed, it will be assumed that there is a problem

and the classroom is empty.

If you are missing students or have pulled students from another class, please post the

students’ names to the CAB Conference.

Take attendance and record students that are in the room, missing students and

students that you ushered into your room. Await further instructions.

Disregard any fire alarms signal, or bells of any sort. Their CRT member will notify

via the intercom when the lockdown is completed.

Teachers may continue to teach in the classroom until further notice.

*Do not call the front office. It is necessary to keep the phone lines clear, so as to

communicate with the police, fire department and the office of the area superintendent.

*Do not open your door under any circumstance. Selected CRT members have keys to

unlock your door if needed.

**Cafeteria- Students/Staff in the cafeteria should report to the stage quickly and quietly.

The curtains should be closed. If necessary these students may be moved to the Music

Room.

**Playground - Students/Staff on the playground should remain outside, unless the

emergency determines that they should be inside the building. They will be evacuated to

the Command Post or to another identified location. Be certain you are wearing your id

badge for police verification.

Code of Red LOCKDOWN Procedures Lockdown signal is given.

Post a sign on front door: We have evacuated the building.

ALL staff must NOT use cellular phones or walkie-talkies during the evacuation.

Do not use any electrical signals as they may cause the bomb device to detonate.

TEACHER PROCEDURES:

Visually scan your classroom. You are looking for any suspicious items or

packages. (If you notice anything suspicious, hang the black circle on the door

handle as you leave and notify Safe Team.)

DO NOT TOUCH THE LIGHTS or any other electrical equipment

Take plan book, emergency folder with red & green placard cards, stop sign,

current class list and parent emergency contact information.

Take your purse and cell phone. Students DO NOT take backpacks.

Unlock your door as you exit your class.

Bring any student found in the hallway with you as you evacuate.

Evacuate building in straight and silent line to off-site location.

Instruct students to Walk with a Purpose…DO NOT RUN!!!

Keep all students in sight. DO NOT LEAD THE LINE!

Be alert at street crossings. Use your STOP SIGN!

Use sidewalks furthest away from the building.

Supervise and manage student behavior en route to the designated area.

Once you reach the evacuation area, take attendance. If you have all of your

students accounted for hold up the GREEN card. If you are missing a student or

have someone else’s then hold up the RED card. The ZONE leaders will

communicate and locate students. Teacher holds the card ONLY!

Keep students calm and quiet.

DO NOT allow students to use their cell phones. They should remain off.

DO NOT give out any information to parents that may call your cell phone or you

see en route to park.

DO NOT release students to any parents.

Remain with your class throughout the evacuation.

If the evacuation occurs during specials, the special area teacher will evacuate to

the fire drill location. The classroom teacher must report immediately to that area

and resume responsibility for the class. Special area teachers will assist in the

overall supervision of students by circulating and monitoring the evacuation area.

Remain at evacuation location until the ALL CLEAR is announced.

Return to class and resume activities.

Accommodations for Limited Mobility Students/Staff Members

Homeland Security Plan

In the event of an incident threatening Homeland Security the principal and the assistant

principal will establish the Internal Control center in the Front office or at an alternate

location depending on the circumstances. The Administration will work closely with the

City of Lauderhill Police Department.

In the event of an emergency Lauderhill Police Chief will relay the necessary procedures

to the principal. The Principal and Assistant Principal will make the appropriate

notifications for immediate response to the Crisis Response Team members.

Each Crisis Response Team Member is equipped with a walkie-talkie to receive

instructions from the Internal Command Post. Upon receiving information by each CRT

member is responsible for communicating the information to their assigned rooms. The

members and their assignments are as follows:

Reading Coach Jones- Responsible for Building 2, First Floor

Guidance Counselor - Responsible for Building 2, Second Floor

Math Coach/Assistant Principal –Building 1, including Cafeteria

ESE Specialist – Responsible for Building 3, Second Floor

Autism Coach – Responsible for Building 3, First Floor

Reading Coach Stewart- Responsible for Media Center

Science Coach - Responsible for office

DISMISSAL OF STUDENTS

In the event of an emergency situation similar to 9/11 the cafeteria will be the designated

location for parents to receive their children. The office staff will be set up with the

student emergency forms to verify authorized adults prior to students being released.

EVACUATION PROCEDURES

If an emergency situation necessitates evacuation, please take this safety folder along

with a class roster and student emergency numbers.

STUDENT EMERGENCY INFORMATION

Mandated emergency forms are filled out each year by the parent or guardian for every

student. Teachers should keep a copy of the emergency information in their plan book.

An additional copy is kept near the Internal Command Post (which can be relocated if the

command post needs to move to an external location). These copies are in alphabetical

by class. Parents will be contacted as needed or required.

VISITORS

All visitors are to report to the front office to sign in and received a visitor's badge. Gates

and doors will remained secured in order to ensure one way in for visitors. This includes

deliveries and dumpster pick up. These individuals will drive to the front office; report

the nature of their visit and present picture identification. The Head of Facilities or the

designee will act accordingly so that the visitor may fulfill responsibility of the visit.

Procedures for Emergency Dismissal

SAFE TEAM

SAFE Team Members- Principal; Assistant Principal; Office Manager; Head of

Facilities; Cafeteria Manager; Guidance Counselor; ESE Specialist; Math Coach and

Reading Coach.

In the event of an emergency, the Area Office will be contacted by the designated point

person (Office Manager) The Point Person will relay accurate information to the Area

Office. In the event that the Area Superintendent mandates an early dismissal, we must

be ready as outlined below.

All SAFE Team members as list above should be wearing their-“SAFE TEAM” vests.

The following SAFE TEAM Members will move about the campus as needed:

Principal, Assistant Principal, and Head of Facilities.

Emergency Early Release When the superintendent sanctions an emergency early dismissal, or a national

emergency is declared (ex. 9/11) the procedure will be as follows:

- Teachers will keep their students in the classroom. If they are in a specials class

or at lunch, teachers will retrieve them and return to class.

- Specials teachers and those teachers without students will report to the office

where command post will be located.

COMMAND POST

The Cafeteria will be our designated” Command Post” The front doors of the office will

be locked. Signs will be posted throughout the campus reading “Parents, Report to the

Cafeteria to pick up your child (ren).”

CROWD CONTROL TEAM

Coach Varner and Yasmine Jacotin will be posted outside of the cafeteria doors to

maintain order. Ms. Jacotin will be able to communicate with parents in Haitian Creole

as needed. Michelle Allen will serve as a substitute in the absence of any crisis team

member.

COMMAND POST DISMISSAL

The following persons will man a table with the emergency numbers of the students as

indicated by last name:

A - G: Anna Stephens (Teacher Assistant)

H - R: Debra Denson (Clerk)

S - Z: Michelle Allen (DPC/IMT)

Once a parent/guardian/adult has been cleared to pick up a student they will be issued a

badge with the student’s name on it. The teachers will be asked to release the students to

come to the front office.

HALL MONITORS

Hall monitors will be in place to ensure the safety of students as they dismissed from the

classrooms:

PHONE CALLS Each classroom teacher should maintain a copy of all of the student phone numbers.

Teachers will make phone calls to parents to inform them of the early dismissal after the

majority of the students have been dismissed. Students with medical needs should be

contacted first. Parent Link Phone System will be activated if the incident only effects

Lauderhill Paul Turner Elementary, otherwise the district will initiate.

IN THE EVENT THE DISMISSAL OCCURS BEFORE OR DURING LUNCH

Teachers will be asked to pick up their class from the cafeteria if an incident should occur

during lunch. Students may take their lunch with them to the classroom. If the

procedures for the dismissal are initiated before lunchtime, the students will remain in the

classroom. The cafeteria staff will prepare lunches to be delivered to the classrooms with

the assistance of the paraprofessionals. Hot lunches already prepared will be served.

FIRE DRILLS

Procedures for emergency exit should be posted in each room and should be understood

by the faculty and student body. The signal of a fire drill will be a loud continuous

buzzing sound and students will exit according to evacuation chart.

No talking is permitted during the drill!

All windows and doors are to be closed when leaving your classroom. Turn off

lights. Teachers should take their Safety Folders with them. Attendance should be

taken once the students are lined up outside. Teachers are to hold up their green

card if they have all of their assigned students with them. Teachers will hold up

their red card if they are missing one of the students assigned to them.

If your exit is blocked due to fire, use the nearest exit. Teachers should discuss alternate

routes with students.

If a fire occurs during the lunch period, students should leave their lunch trays in place

and file out through the nearest exit.

Students will be instructed to give immediate attention to their teacher for instructions on

the proper exit routes to be used. Students and teachers are to wait for the all-clear signal

(a long ring of the bell) before re-entering the building.

Fire drills are conducted 10 times a year, including two drills within the first two weeks

of school. The first evacuation drill shall be held within the first five- (5) days after the

opening date of school. Each teacher is to walk his/her students through fire drill

procedures the first day of school.

Tornado Drills

All personnel on the school premises should be assembled at the far side of the

classroom, away from the large windows. Personnel in classrooms located in an area

without an inside corridor should be assembled in an interior hallway. All staff members

will respond to the specific command to assume the protective position facing interior

walls. The public address will be used to sound the command. The following

announcement will be made: "All students and staff, report to your assigned areas. This

is a tornado drill. Everyone down, crouch on elbows and knees. Hands over back of

head."
