Workers can face a wide range ofsound levels throughout the day andin different areas at the same facility.

STEP 1With clean hands, hold earplugbetween thumb and forefingeras shown. Roll and progressivelycompress the entire tapered endof the earplug to a smallwrinkle-free cylinder.

STEP 2To ensure fitting, reach hand overhead and gently pull ear upwardand outward as shown. Insertcompressed, tapered end ofearplug well inside ear canal.

STEP 3Hold in place for 10 seconds untilearplug expands. Release, thenpush in again for 5 seconds toensure fit.

STEP 4If properly fitted, the end of theearplugs should not be visible tosomeone looking at you fromthe front.

All employers in Australia andNew Zealand have a duty to clearly

identify and eliminate hazards in theworking environment. Where there are

no other means of removing thecontaminant from the workplace thewearing of AS/NZS 1716 complying

respiratory protection is mandatory.

AIRBORNE HAZARDSYour instinct to protectyourself will be quicker witha hazard you can see, butremember that some typesof harmful particles areinvisible to the human eye.

ORGANIC VAPOURSWhen organic vapours are drawn through an organic vapour cartridge, the air is filtered as vapours condense into the carbon pores. Vapoursmove through the cartridge from one pore to the next. This occurs more quickly for small volatile vapours with lower boiling points (e.g. acetone.)Some migration of organic vapours can even occur during storage, so care must be taken before reusing the cartridge. The effective service life isthe time until vapours begin to exit the cartridge.

PARTICULATE FILTERSThese filters are enhanced with electrostatically charged fibres to trap particulates within the filter media. As particulate filters load up with thecontaminant, they typically become more efficient; however, they also become harder to breathe through.
