Theme Study

• Students will study what they can do to stay safe. They will learn the dangers of strangers and fire. Students will identify community helpers who will keep them safe. Students will also learn survive strategies in the cold winter months and the hot summer months. • This unit will integrate reading and writing with social studies, science,

mathematics, art, music and physical education. • This unit will follow common core state standards for English

Language Arts and math, the 21st century standards in Science. Social Studies, Art, Music and Physical Education with be taken from North Dakota state content standards.

• Students will read various fiction and non-fiction text found in their book box about the staying safe in various situations. • Students will draw pictures to go with the words in a take-home book

Language Arts: Writing Activities• Students will add safety words to our word wall• Students will write a letter to a police officer• Students will write an I Remember… poem about our field trip to the police station, fire station and

ambulance• Students will keep a journal of all the ways a child can stay safe. • Students will come up with your own safety tip after watching Officer Buckle and Gloria• Students will write a story about how to stay safe and warm on the playground in the middle of

winter• Students will write a list of things they need to take to Raging Rivers on a hot August day• Students will create a graphic organizer with a fireman or police officer in the middle, surrounded by

adjectives• Students will make a Venn diagram to compare and contrast differences and similarities between

police and fireman• Students will keep a science journal to predict what is going to happen with the egg drop, hot dog

activity and fingerprints.

Language Arts: Speaking Activities

• Students will give an example and a non-example of safety rules• Students will present their magazine clippings to the class and explain

how the pictures represent safety• Students will present their picture of 2 ways to stay safe.• Homework: Students will need to go home and talk to their parents

about what they learned about stranger danger and come up with secret word so if a stranger says “I’m supposed to give you a ride home, I’m your mom’s friend”, the child can ask for the secret word. • Mini - plays

• Students will listen to their peers’ examples and non-examples of being safe. • Students will listen to books on tape from the literature selection

during Daily 5 rotations on safety• Students will participate in a actual fire drill• Actively listen to fiction and non-fiction safety books • Listen to fireman, police officer and EMT

Language Arts: Viewing Activities

• View pictures of items that could start fires such as candles, lighters, cigarettes, fireworks, Christmas lights, appliances• Students will use their active listening skills while students are

presenting their magazine clippings. • Students will view the presentations at the fire house and police station. • View DVD selection/websites• Presentations of mini – plays• Word wall• Viewing each others poetry• Viewing each others artwork

Language Arts: Visually Representing Activities• Create a picture using watercolors that represents something that could start

a fire. • Students will cut out pictures of magazines that represent safety• Practice dialing 911 on a piece of paper cut out like an iPhone.

• On the back students will write what they may need to call 911 for

• Make a phone with emergency contact numbers printed on the back. Students could work to memorize these numbers. I would then laminate these cards and put it on a keychain so students could attach it to their backpack zipper.• Math graph• Community helpers pictures

Science ActivitiesK-PS3-1. Make observations to determine the effect of sunlight on Earth’s surface.

• Egg drop activity – demonstrates importance of wearing your helmet • Detective investigating fingerprints as police officers do• Create your own first aid kit like the ones they have in an ambulance• 2 hot dogs under a heat lamp, put sunscreen on one, and leave the other

one plain. We would leave the hot dogs under there all day and reapply sunscreen as needed. • Students will document observations in their science journal

• Put a child’s hand in a bag full of Crisco and put it in ice cold water, demonstrates how animals can survive in the cold • Melting crayons in a cupcake wrapper on a hot August or September day

Mathematics ActivitiesCC.6: Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies.

• Show on a thermometer what temperature it is when it’s freezing• Give students the opportunity to do some water play, students need

to recognize a number that is on a “flame” in a tub. Students need to say the number correctly and spray the flame. The number on the flame and the number of times the student sprays the flame must be the same• Would you like to be a firefighter class vote and graph.• Graph the number of each type of fingerprint swirl. Identify

most/least of each type of fingerprint.

Social Studies ActivitiesPolitical institutions 4.2.2 Know the basic functions that government performs in one's school, community,state, tribal nation, and nation.

• Circles program – Different colors means different safety levels of people• We will also demonstrate symbols on signs

• Research the types of duties that policeman and fireman do• Practice crosswalk safety, always have a buddy to walk across the

street with• Community helpers: police, fire, EMT• Match picture of people in the community with the jobs they do.

Physical Education ActivitiesND Content Physical Education - 4.1.3 Know how to use space to move safely in different directions, at varying speeds.

• Students will have to grab their winter gear and get it on as fast as they can, just like fireman do when they have to get ready to go put out a fire.• Smoke rises, so crawl! Have each student hold a handle of a

parachute, lift it up, get underneath and crawl as fast as they can to the middle. • Firefighter obstacle course with tape to walk on, a balance beam,

chairs to crawl under, tables to walk on and hula hoops to jump in and out of.
