BFDr Siwan Davies, Senior Lecturer in Geography, has been awarded a prestigious, 1.47 millionEuropean Research Council grant to unlock thesecrets of past climate change. Microscopiclayers of volcanic ash deposited in ancient iceand marine sediments will be examined withthe research aiming to answer the key questionof whether the ocean drives or merely ampliesatmospheric temperature jumps.

r avies said: ittle has challenged ourunderstanding of cliate change ore thanthe abruptness with which large-scale jups in

teperature occurred in the past. he causes ofthese rapid cliate changes that saw teperatureswings of up to 16 occurring within a fewdecades are poorly understood.

hese cliatic events could be related to oceancirculation behaviour, or be triggered by changesin the atosphere possibly in the tropics. hisproject will test these opposing possibilities throughthe analysis of icroscopic layers of volcanicash that have been deposited in ancient iceand arine sedients.

r avies will build a new tea who will eploya pioneering approach, using the icroscopictraces of ash left fro volcanic eruptions to preciselyatch reenland ice-cores, which provide arecord of atospheric variability, with orthtlantic arine records, depicting changes inthe ocean circulation syste.

Scientists at CERN in Geneva includingphysicists from Swansea University havesucceeded in trapping antimatter atoms forover 16 minutes. The ALPHA (Anti-hydrogenLaser Physics Apparatus) team have created, trapped, and stored antihydrogen atoms longenough to begin to study them in detail. It isthe longest time period that antihydrogen hasbeen captured and a signicant developmenton the experiments major advance lastNovember, when atoms of antimatter weretrapped for the rst time.

ontrolled production of antihydrogen atosin the laboratory has been possible for nearlya decade, when s H project, therst experient to produce copious aounts ofcold antihydrogen, ade its rst breakthrough. However, all of these ant i-atos were quicklyannihilated when they cae into contact withatter. his has now changed with the latestPH breakthrough.

he Swansea tea, led by Professormike harlton, played a ajor role inboth the H and PH projects.

Professor harlton said: ur ai is to studyantihydrogen, and ake detailed coparisonswith ordinary hydrogen. hilst hydrogen isthe ost abundant eleent in the Universe, itsees that antihydrogen has only ever beenfored in our experients here on arth.

hy there was no antiatter left when theUniverse becae cold enough for atos tofor reains a great ystery and one wehope to shed soe light upon.

his latest developent is a huge step towardseasureents on antihydrogen and we areplanning rst experients for later in the year, said Swansea University physicist r ielsmadsen, who is currently on sabbatical at after winning a prestigious oyal Societyeverhule rust Senior esearch Fellowship.

e have increased the efciency with whichwe trap the antihydrogen atos and heldonto soe of the for long periods, alreadyincreasing our capability several thousandties over what we reported last oveber.

The Universitys College of Science is home toone of the UKs leading insect mycopathology(insect pest control) teams. Team memberDr Minshad Ali Ansari has recently conducteda study that shows for the rst time that afungus known as Metarhizium anisopliae

V275 can effectively kill adult Culicoides(biting midges) in the family of insectsthat carry Bluetongue Virus (BTV).

Bluetongue disease affects sheep and cattle. thas had a ajor econoic ipact in uropeancountries in recent years. ontrol of the diseaseis becoing ore iportant as the virus isstarting to survive further north over winter.

his study is particularly tiely as new Udirectives are encouraging eber statesto develop integrated pest anageentprograes which use benign plant protectionproducts. ncouragingly, the efciency of thefungus was shown to increase when appliedto certain substrates such as anure, suggesting success in future eld tests.

r nsari explained: lthough insecticideshave proved effective in killing ulicoidesspecies, they have been harful to a rangeof benecial insects.

s a result, the range of available insecticideshas diinished as the cheical-based productsare withdrawn fro the arket becauseof the perceived risk to huans and theenvironent and farers face a growingchallenge to control the population ofbiting idges.

he fungi can, potentially, be appliedcost-effectively to the places where adult

idges rest, such as anial housing andlivestock, to effectively target knownproble areas.

he next step is to test the fungus in large-scaleeld trials with the eventual ai of developingprotocols for its siple and econoicalapplication in B endeic countries.

She was awarded the luni bursary fro Swansea Universitysluni Fund to cover the full cost of tuition fees due to her strongacadeic background and coitent to the research area. Jenny alsodeonstrated her nancial need and how the research will ipact onthe wider counity. Swansea Universitys luni Fund was set up inoveber 2004 with the generous contributions of luni across the UK.o date, eleven bursaries have been awarded to aught masters students.

Jenny said, Undertaking research as part of the aught masters will beof huge benet, not only for AIDS Trust Cymru, but also other sallerorganisations. t will help focus resources and possibly aid access tofunding particularly relevant in these current econoic ties.

s a part-tie student at Swansea, Jenny said, Postgraduate study is verydifferent to undergraduate study: the classes are saller and have foundyself working with people fro a variety of backgrounds. n fact it has

hat did you enjoy ost about your courseat Swansea?

originally applied to read Hist ory, and wasinuenced by a selection interview with PeterStead who reains a great friend to this day. ny rst year also studied nglish and Politicsand decided later to switch to single honoursPolitics. t was a fascinating course, Professorreenleaf was Head of epartent and he leda tea of enthusiastic and supportive lecturers.r ichard aylor taught e Propaganda inai erany and was inspiring. He laterbecae y supervisor when ebarked onpostgraduate work in the departent.
