Greek Warfare Compared to Rap Lyrics

• “Historian Victor Davis Hanson has even compared Homer’s descriptions of his heroes’ exploits to rap lyrics that “glorify rival gangs who shoot and maim each other for prestige, women, booty, and turf.” (Cahill, 41)

• Both Homer’s descriptions of war in modern rap lyrics show a similar aggression and goal.

Homer’s Epics: How to Fight a War

• Homer’s Epics describe a warrior wearing strong armor and wielding weapons such as swords, and spears. Some weapons weighed up to seventy pounds.

• Another big part of war was the chariot but Homer doesn’t describe them thoroughly despite their importance.

• Wars were not fought from a distance but very close together.

Greek Warfare Compared To Modern Warfare

• Greek Warfare was close up combat, today we fight from a distance.

• They machinery that we have today enables us to fight from a distance instead of an outright battle.

• After about three centuries Greek Warfare started to evolve into the type of warfare we see today, they used machinery such as cranes, levers and artillery. The organization of their military also progressed.
