THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 1, 2018

Someone and Something

is Missing

Fr. James is missing and so is his column. When you read this bulletin on Saturday evening, Father will already be at his new parish, St. Joseph in High Bridge. Father left this

morning after the 8 am mass. He did indeed write a column, for this week, but, it will be in this week’s bulletin in High Bridge.

We thank Father James for taking good care of us for these last 3 months. It’s not easy to fill the shoes of an experienced pastor, who has been in a parish for 9 years. It’s really not easy if the new person coming has never been a pastor or even an administrator. Fr. James was neither of them. But, as the saying goes, he “jumped right in.” He tried to get to know as many of us by name as he could. He showed himself to be a good priest and an easy person to get to know. He was eager to become a part of our parish family and take on the job of caring for us as our new spiritual Father.

However, as we all know, plans can change and in this case for the better. Father is going back to his roots, near the town he grew up in. He will be close to two special people who need him, his 90 year old Father and a brother who requires constant medical care.

We will miss him. We send our thanks, prayers and best wishes with him as he embarks on this, the next chapter of his life.

Fr. Jim Tucker will be with us for the coming week. We won’t have a chance to really get to know him but how fortunate for us that we will not be without a priest in the parish.

By the way, for those of us who have been in the parish awhile, how many of us sometime called Fr. Jay, Fr. Joe. How many of us called Fr. James, Fr. Jay. Now for a week we have Fr. Jim. Well, we will be out of the J family next weekend. Coming to stay with us is Fr. Mark Kehoe. We look forward to meeting him.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Have a great 4th of July. Fly your flag proudly.
You’re a grand old flag, you’re a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave. You’re the emblem of the land I love The home of the free and the brave.
Every heart beats true, ‘neath the red white and blue
Where there’s never a boast or a brag But should auld acquaintance be forgot Keep your eye on the grand old flag..
( George M. Cohan, 1906)
GOD BLESS AMERICA
This famous song was written by Irving Berlin in 1918. Mr. Berlin was a Russian-Jewish immigrant. In 1940, Mr. Berlin donated the royalties from his song to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts via the God Bless America Fund. On July 9. 1942. he sang his song for servicemen at the Stage Door Canteen in New York City.
AMERICA
Massachusetts Minister Samuel Francis Smith wrote the words in 30 minutes. The song became known as MY COUNTRY ‘TIS OF THEE. It was sung for the first time on July 4, 1832, during a children’s independence Day Service at Park Street church in Boston. It became the unofficial national anthem until it was supplanted by AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL.
AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL
This song started out as a poem written in 1893 by Katharine Lee Bates while vacationing in Colorado. The poem was first published on July 4, 1895. It was set to music in 1904 from music composed in 1882 by organist Samuel Ward. It was the unofficial national anthem until congress chose THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER in 1931.
