From Father Dave

When I worked for the diocese as the Vicar of Clergy I would at times field phone calls from parishioners

complaining about their parish or priest. I would listen to their concern and then I would always respond by

saying, “Have you shared this concern with Father?” Nine times out of ten the person would say “No.”

Why is it that when we have an issue with someone, we discuss it with everyone else but them? I think

the simple answer is that fundamentally we are uncomfortable with conflict. Instead of addressing the issue,

we can tend to go to everyone else, but the person involved. History has shown, however, that when there is

engagement in the face of conflict great things can happen.

In the Gospel today Jesus lets us know that if we have an issue with someone we need to go and share it

with them alone. When there is hurt involved this is not always easy. Somewhere after hurt, there can be

anger. Both of these realities make confrontation challenging. Nevertheless, when we go to that person that

we struggle with, that is the Christian way.

So how can we best confront the person with whom we have an issue? One of the first things we can do is

begin by praying for them. Over time prayer can diffuse the anger and hurt. The second thing we can do is to

collect our thoughts by simply writing them down. We need to put into writing our feelings in the form of a

letter. No one needs to see this letter as it is simply an exercise to collect and refine one’s thoughts. The third

thing we can do is attempt to put ourselves in their shoes. We have no idea what they might be dealing within

their life. Sometimes there is a context to things that can preclude one from taking things personally.

Finally, we need to courageously and in a non-defensive way attempt to have a conversation with the person.

Timing is everything.

Many years ago, I attended a communications workshop. In that setting, they offered a formula for these

kinds of conversations. The formula is “WHEN YOU…., I FEEL….BECAUSE…”

As we begin this new month of September which in many ways signals a new year, let us together resolve

to not run away from those who hurt us and talk about that hurt with others, but rather meet them so that we

can grow together. At the end of the day, we are all works in progress and God is not finished with us yet.

This is the final week of the satisfaction of the outstanding First Holy Communion Masses.

Congratulations to all of our First Communicants. The following week we will begin conferring the

Sacrament of Confirmation on the candidates over a series of dates. Please pray for them as they prepare to

receive the Holy Spirit and be fully initiated into the life of the Church.

This week also contains two special Marian celebrations. Tuesday, September 8, is

the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. There is no better way to honor Mary on her

birthday than to pray the Rosary. I invite all of our families to pray the Rosary that day.

Saturday, September 12, is the Most Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I invite

everyone to place a statue of Mary in your windowsill as we pray for an end to the

pandemic and continued good weather for our outdoor Masses.

Finally, Friday, September 11, is the 19th Anniversary of the September 11 attacks. I

think we all knew where we were on that day. Life, and for that matter travel, changed

forever. We will never forget the loss of so many innocent lives. May they rest in peace.

May their families know God’s comfort and consolation. And may God, through the

intercession of Saint Michael the Archangel, protect all of our first responders—

paramedics, fire-fighters, and police officers.

Poor Boxes

In the month of August a total of $1,898 was donated by special donations to assist the Ladies of Charity in caring for members of the parish community facing serious

hardship. Please know that through your generosity, four needy families in the area received hope and resources. Without the ability to give in the poor boxes, the Ladies of Charity would welcome any monetary donations. You can do so by mailing them to the Parish Center at 10090 Old Perry Highway, Wexford, PA 15090 or you may drop them off at the Parish Center in the front door on the credenza and someone will collect it.

Thank you for your generosity!

BETHLEHEM WOMAN’S SHELTER

We at Saint Aidan Parish are happy to welcome all volunteers! We are helping 26 residents and up to 8 emergency victims during COVID-19. We serve fresh warm meals the second Saturday of every month. Because of the pandemic, these times are harder

on the women, so we will be supporting homeless women with more than a meal. Soon we hope to be doing Art therapy, yoga, jewelry making, reflective writing, and much more. Without the support of our parish, we could not support these women in need. We will be asking for further assistance and volunteers to run programs in the shelter in the upcoming months once we are permitted. For now, we thank you deeply for your time spent, meals cooked, and donations each month. Please consider donating in September. The Sign up Genius is located on Saint Aidan website at saintaidanparish.org under “Ministries”. Any questions contact Tara Dalton at [email protected]. Thank you for your continuing support and generosity to those in need.

Making a Spiritual Communion

If you do not have the ability to drive to our outdoor Masses, it is important to still keep the Lord’s Day holy! You can do this by intentionally praying the rosary, singing hymns or praise and worship songs, praying with Scripture, and making a spiritual communion, like the one below.

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Celebrating Father Zywan!

**Change in Venue**

“If you already RSVP’d before the venue change, it is not necessary to RSVP a second time.”

Due to restrictions placed on Allegheny County by the Governor’s office, Blueberry Hill Park Activity Center can no longer host our event. They have informed us that we would be limited to a total of only 25 people allowed inside for the entire day (no rotation allowed), and only 125 people for the entire event. Therefore, in order to accommodate all those who wish to attend, the decision has been made to move the event to Butler County. Please join us to celebrate and thank Father Zywan for his 20+ years of service to the Catholic Community of Wexford on Sunday, September 20, from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. at North Boundary Park, 1171 North Boundary Road, Cranberry Township. We will gather in the pavilion immediately to the right of the Veteran’s Memorial. A catered luncheon will be provided. In order for Father Zywan to spend as much time with everyone as possible, and to help us comply with COVID-19 guidelines, we are asking that families plan to attend according to their last names: Last names A – H 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Last names I – P 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Last names Q – Z 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.

To plan for the luncheon and for crowd control, we ask that you RSVP by the end of day September 10, to [email protected] with your family name and number attending. Please spread the word to any parishioners you know who may not regularly received online notices and have them RSVP if they wish to join us.

MASKS WILL BE REQUIRED!

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

Directions from Saint Alexis Church: Turn right out of the parking lots onto Old Perry Highway and then right onto Route 19/Perry Highway. Travel on Route 19 North for 9.5 miles and turn right onto North Boundary Road. (There is a traffic signal) At the roundabout (0.4 miles), take the second exit to continue on North Boundary Road. Go 0.8 miles and turn right into North Boundary Park. Follow the main road and signs to the Veterans’ Memorial. The pavilion will be to the right of the Memorial. There is ample parking just past the pavilion.
