welcome!

Dear Parishioners,

I remember during my first Christmas in the

United States how weird it was to receive presents on

December 25th as growing up in the Dominican

Republic we used to exchange presents on January 6th,

the Feast of the Epiphany. Today I thought it would be

interesting to look at the different ways other cultures

around the world celebrate this feast.

What follows is an excerpt from an article by

Adelaide Mena, “What to know the history behind the

Feast of Epiphany?”

In Italy, La Befana brings sweets and

presents to children not on Christmas, but on

Epiphany. Children in many parts of Latin

America, the Philippines, Portugal, and Spain

also receive their presents on “Three Kings

Day.”

Meanwhile, in Ireland, Catholics

celebrate “Women's Christmas” – where

women rest from housework and cleaning and

celebrate together with a special meal.

Epiphany in Poland is marked by taking chalk

– along with gold, incense and amber – to be

blessed at Mass. Back at home, families will

inscribe the first part of the year, followed by

the letters, “K+M+B+” and then the last

numbers of the year on top of every door in the

house.

The letters…stand for the names

traditionally given to the wise men – Casper,

Melchior and Balthazar – as well as for the

Latin phrase “Christus mansionem benedicat,”

or, “Christ, bless this house.”

In nearly every part of the world,

Catholics celebrate Epiphany with a Kings

Cake: a sweet cake that sometimes contains an

object like a figurine or a lone nut. In some

locations lucky recipient of this prize either

gets special treatment for the day, or they must

then hold a party at the close of the traditional

Epiphany season on February 2nd.

In Christ,

Fr. Juan Jose

DO YOU HAVE FIVE MINUTES A DAY?

DO YOU WORRY ABOUT

OUR WORLD TODAY?

We would like to invite you to become part of the

LIVING ROSARY. This activity was started at

Saint Aloysius Parish a number of years ago as a

means of joining our prayers together to pray for

peace in our country and for all our special intentions.

It is also in response to people’s needs for greater

spiritual growth. At this time we have several teams

of 5 members each participating in our living rosary.

It is a power house of prayer!

This activity may be taken on by anyone. Families

can participate, the home bound can become part of

the Living Rosary; persons on their way to work can

join also. There are no meetings to attend.

What is necessary to become

part of the Living Rosary is a

commitment to say one decade

of the Rosary each day. You

then become a member of a

team who together says the

entire rosary each day. It is

said for the intentions of those

members comprising the

Living Rosary and for the specific and special

intentions of our parish. It can be done at home, in

the car, on the train, and any time of your day.

The Rosary has been used for centuries for world

peace, against the heresy of the times, during the Nazi

occupation of Poland and at many other times. This is

a simple devotion, parish oriented, that demands little

of its members and produces great spiritual results.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the

LIVING ROSARY. Please fill out the form below

and put it in the collection basket, drop it off at the

rectory or the parish center, or call Dee Taylor

at 973-226-0209 x 32. We will then contact you to

coordinate the groups and mysteries of the Rosary.

I am interested in becoming a member of the Living

Rosary:
