A WORD FROM FR. JOHN…

After one of our Masses last weekend, a parishioner approached me with some questions about the selection process for new members to our Parish Pastoral Council (PPC). As we are in the midst of seeking nominations to serve, I thought that it might be helpful to explain a little more about that process. Over the course of the four weekends of April, we will be asking our parishioners to nominate others or themselves to serve by filling out a form available in the pews and dropping the completed form in the collection basket. On the first weekend of May, current members of our PPC will offer testimonials at the end of Mass. During the second week in May, all those nominated who might be interested in serving will gather for a discernment and selection evening led by the PPC discernment committee and departing PPC members. The goal is for those gathered to reach a consensus as to whom among those interested would be best positioned to join those current PPC members to form a council that is representative of the community that gathers to worship at our three churches. This process is new to me, but my understanding is that it has met with success for a number of years at St. Mary’s. To assist you as you discern whether someone you know or perhaps yourself are good candidates for nomination, it may be helpful to layout some basis qualifications and some qualities that make for effective PPC members. In general, good candidates possess the primary gift of practical wisdom. The Council is made up of parishioners who reflect the diversity of the parish, have a vested interest in the life and development of the parish, and want to help the pastor in this regard. We are not looking for a group of professionals, who are expert in catechesis, liturgy, pastoral care or education; but those who want our parish to be the best version of itself. Anyone meeting the following criteria can be nominated: be fully initiated Roman Catholics (Baptism,

Confirmation, Eucharist) in good standing with the Church;

be registered and supporting members of the parish; be participants in parish life and worship; be committed to prayer, study, listening and dialogue; be committed to giving the time needed for

participation; and be aware of and comply with the Parish Conflict of

Interest Policy Parish Council members should also possess the following gifts necessary for pastoral leadership: a desire for spiritual growth in oneself and in the parish; eagerness to participate in parish decisions about its

direction; willingness to listen, speak openly and honestly, and to

work toward consensus;

integrity in articulating what one has heard and what one believes;

the ability to inspire and empower others and to delegate; and

cooperation, flexibility and openness with people and ideas.

Currently, the council meets one evening per month (Sept.-June) for about 1½ hours. Our twelve member council currently is comprised of four members who identify primarily with each of our three worship sites, joined by our parochial vicar, Fr. Matthew Jones, and myself, and our parish secretary, Diane Pawlik serving as the PPC secretary. Hopefully, this information will assist you in making nominations, as we seek the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in forming our Parish Pastoral Council, which will have a significant role in shaping the vision and mission of parish community. If you have any questions about the PPC or the discernment process for the selection of new members, please feel free to inquire when you see me in church or contact me at the parish office, by phone or email. I offer my congratulations to our seventeen young people, who were confirmed by Bishop Matano at Sacred Heart this past Thursday evening, along with their sponsors, parents and families, who have supported and encouraged them throughout the two-year preparation process and the entirety of their faith journeys. Now that they have completed their initiation into the Church, we look forward to these young people assuming their place as full, active and enthusiastic adult members of our parish community! Don’t forget: our Liturgical Ministers Appreciation Breakfast this coming Saturday morning, April 28, at St. Mary’s. We will continue to accept your donations to our Next-To-New Sale through Thursday, April 26, in anticipation of the actual sale on May 3-5. We would appreciate a few hours of your time to assist with this important parish fund raiser, that also provides essential goods to a number of those living on limited means in our community. Peace and Easter blessings to all! Yours, Fr. John PS - Just a quick note as this bulletin goes to print. Congratulations to Fr. Matthew Jones, who applied for and has been appointed the Parochial Administrator of All Saints Parish in Corning, NY, effective June 26, 2018. We look forward to welcoming Fr. Felicjan Sierotowicz, who has been appointed to take his place as our Parochial Vicar. Fr Felicjan, originally from Krakow, Poland, has been serving in our diocese since 2000, currently as Parochial Vicar of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Community in Penn Yan, NY. More information will follow. Please keep Fr. Matt and Fr. Felicjan in your prayers, as they start transitioning to their new assignments. We wish them well.

RENEWING AND REFRESHING ADULT FAITH “In Baptism, people are incorporated into Christ and become part of God’s people. This first Sacrament makes us a ‘new creation through water and the Holy Spirit.’ (Christian Initiation, Introduction #2.) By the signing at Confirmation they are strengthened in the image of the Lord and are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Sacramental Policies Confirmation, Diocese of Rochester Our Confirmation Candidates (both year 1 and year 2 candidates) participated in a Retreat on April 15th. We invited teen parishioners who were Confirmed last year to help with the retreat. They gave witness talks and facilitated small group sharing. Below is an outline shared by one of the teens. What would YOU say about your life after Confirmation? Life After Confirmation:

Confirmation is the beginning of you taking responsibility for your independent relationship with God and the church. It signifies that you accept your faith and will continue to serve the Lord as a Catholic.

You will continue to mature and grow in faith Confirmation gives you:

A responsibility to share your faith with others; to be an example of the faith in and out of church

Some ideas for continued involvement in our parish are…

Youth Group that meets monthly

Parish ministry groups

Help out at coffee hours or other social functions

Volunteer at First Communion/Confirmation preparation classes

Pray to God and ask him what he wants you to do The Ceremony: I was very nervous leading up to confirmation but once at the ceremony I felt that I was prepared through our confirmation meetings.

— William Lopatka

A DIFFERENT VIEW OF THE SCRIPTURES

“Preaching the Scriptures through

the Lens of Age and Wisdom” is the

new book authored by the April speaker at the next Voices of Women presentation this weekend on Sunday,

April 22 at Noon in the Dugan Center at St. Mary’s. Sr. Barbara Moore RSM, will discuss the scriptures and her remarks will center on the men and women from the Old and New Testaments whose contributions described in scripture is of value to us today. Sr. Barbara is renown for her preaching of the scriptures. Now, as an older and wiser woman, she views the contributions of these testament people in a different way and so has developed reflections for all to consider. Sr Barbara will have copies of her book available for sale following the talk. All are welcome to participate in this session that runs from 12:00 to 1:00. Free street and lot parking available. Don’t miss this dynamic presenter as she opens the scriptures in a unique way. Bring a friend and share this event.
