Saint Canera, patroness of Irish Sailors, is sitting in a boat with an
oil lamp, the symbol of wisdom and virginity, with a monastery on
an island in the background where she sought spiritual rest. She
was refused entrance to the island but was given Eucharist just
before she died. The shamrock speaks to her Irish ancestry.

Dear Church, My childhood memories of Pentecost are of a warm humid day, many times in June. The parish church always had two large bouquets of brilliant red-orange gladioli. Seldom in those days did one see such bright flowers on the altar. It made a profound impression on me. Pentecost is such a dynamic feast—wind and tongues of fire and enthusiastic preaching being understood by people of various language backgrounds. The Spirit’s coming upon the apostles was a life-changing experience. Huddled in fear behind closed doors, the Holy Spirit transforms them into bold, fearless, zeal-ous preachers. The rest of the Acts of the Apostles seems driven by this outpouring of the Spirit. Every sacramental celebration is another Pentecost in that we receive the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. This is obvious in the sacra-ments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Orders. In every Eucharist we pray that the Spirit come upon the gifts to make them Holy by transforming them into the Body and Blood of Christ. After the con-secration, once again we ask that the Spirit come upon each of us who receive that we may become one Body, one Spirit in Christ. The Spirit will indeed make us one Body, one Spirit if we are open to his inspiration in our lives. When we are unified as a church community, we can be sure that it is because of the Spirit’s presence among us. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love!
With fond affection, Fr. Hank
