of sin, all hope consists in confession; in confession there is a
chance for mercy.” - St. Isidore of Seville

Catholic Ministries AppealCatholics in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati use the Catholic
Ministries Appeal (CMA) to provide a path of hope.
The ministries that benefit from this appeal are:
 • Catholic Charities and Social Services
 • Campus, Hospital, and Prison Ministries
 • Seminary and Vocations
 • St. Rita School for the Deaf
 • Retired Archdiocesan Priests
 • New Evangelization
Each of these local Catholic ministries depends on faith-
filled Catholics of our archdiocese for a key part of their budget
each year. The CMA is a once-a-year outreach, when all of our
parishes, more than 200 strong, join together to support these
ministries, doing more than one parish could alone.
Whether you’re a longtime supporter or considering a gift
for the first time, we ask you to learn about these ministries on
this website and prayerfully consider making a pledge to the
2017 Catholic Ministries Appeal at www.catholicappeal.info.
Amen? Amen!

by fATHER JASoN williAMSTHE PASToR’S CoRNER
“You are the salt of the earth; you are the light of the world.”
our lord not only declares himself the light of the
world, but through his grace — his divine life living
also in those who follow him — he is able to remind
his disciples that they, too, are the light of the world.
His disciples give flavor and goodness to the world
around them, being salt of the earth, when they
allow that grace to influence the decisions and
actions, thoughts and words, that fill each day of
their life.
We are also privileged to be salt for the earth
and light in this world through the divine life of
Jesus Christ living in us since our baptism. what a
beautiful gift it is to cooperate with God’s work of
salvation by allowing him to use us as instruments
of his grace in the world around us. Such a tremen-
dous gift also bears with it a great responsibility:
keeping that sanctifying grace alive by avoiding sin
and allowing the lord to pick us up when we fall
through the sacrament of Reconciliation.
Our interior life of loving union with God stays
healthy and robust primarily through our personal
prayer, our participation in the sacraments, spiritual
reading, and our sharing in the liturgical prayer of
the Church. if we so keep the fire of grace ardently
aflame, then its light and warmth radiate powerfully
to those around us through our works of charity for
the poor and oppressed, the sick and imprisoned, the
lonely and afraid. let us take advantage of all the
ways God offers us to allow him to live in us that he
may love through us!

UNDERSTANDiNg THE MASS — Part 2: invisible RealitiesThe first article in this series referred to the seven sacraments as the most powerful way of having a personal encounter with Jesus.
We all have experienced the sacraments, but few have a good understanding of them. While we know what each of the
seven is named, do we know what makes each a sacrament? What is the common thread that binds them together as sacra-
ments? The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines a sacrament as “an efficacious sign of grace, instituted by Christ and
entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us through the work of the Holy Spirit” (CCC 1210).
That is a great deal to digest! i find a definition by Karl Rahner, S.J., more helpful. He says sacraments are all “visible
signs that participate in invisible realities.” A personal encounter with Jesus is one of these invisible realities. we can only
see these invisible realities with eyes of faith. As St. Paul says, “we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Cor 5:7). This is one of the
difficulties in understanding the sacraments. The realities they produce are invisible, but we still participate in them. They
do not simply indicate or point to other realities but allow us to actually be part of or take part in other invisible realities.
An example of an invisible reality that we all take part in is love for another
person. We cannot see love, but we can feel it and know that it exists beyond
any doubt. Some invisible realities are feelings, while others are events or places.
Examples of invisible realities within the Mass include the last Supper,
Jesus’ death on the cross, the Supper of the lamb, and the Mass in Heaven with
the angels and saints. We participate in all of these invisible realities whenever
we attend Mass, the Celebration of the Holy Eucharist.
The remaining articles will discuss our participation in these realities as
well as others.– Cody Egner
Reflections with the Saints: Mary, Mother of JesusAppointment books. Planners. Calendars. we outline our present, plan our future, and review our past. We know exactly where we want to be and how we want to get there. And then it happens – the unexpected, the unplanned, the unforeseen. The death of a family member. A job change. A serious illness. Our neatly ordered lives are shattered, and we are left holding the pieces.
How do we react when things happen that we can’t control? Do we rail against the heavens, demanding answers, or do we accept, trusting that everything will work out according to divine plan?
Mary certainly wasn’t expecting an angel to appear to her and ask if she was willing to be-come the mother of the Messiah. Naturally, she had a few questions – like, how can this happen when i am neither married nor involved with a man? Yet once her questions were resolved, she answered “fiat” (“let it be done to me according to god’s will”). She was willing to trust, even when it entailed mystery and the unknown.
As we begin a new year, let us resolve to accept with joy the twists and turns life brings us. let us open our hearts to the wonder of each new day and trust that our lives are unfolding the way they ought.
Do i have to be in control of everything? in what areas can i let others have their say? –365 Saints, Koenig-Bricker

8th Graders Study Encyclicals: The 8th graders at St. Cecilia worked in groups to study different encyclicals. i was able to watch them do their presentations last week (photo, above). i was so proud of the students. They learned about whom the encyclical was geared to, who wrote it, the time period and how it is relevant to us today. Their teacher, Jessica Martin, did a very nice job teaching them how to do a PowerPoint
presentation. 1 Fr. Jas-on’s Vacation: fr. Jason va-cationed in Texas last week (photos, left). He visited a friend who served on the same submarine as he did and is now a seminarian for the Diocese of Corpus Christi. while there, fr. Jason concelebrated at the cathedral of Corpus Christi. He also toured the churches in the diocese, stopped by the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, visited with his brothers and their families, and made a mini pilgrimage to the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of San Antonio, where he found a great stained-glass window of his two patron saints (St. Anthony of Padua and St. francis Xavier). from there he visited four of the historic San Antonio Missions, which date to the mid-1700s. The lands are part of the National Park System, but the parishes continue to operate in
service to the local peoples.
1 50th Wedding Anniversary Remembrance: Jan. 21, 2017, was the 50th anniversary of beth and the late Roger buckman. Their wedding was at St. Cecilia 50 years ago, so their fam-ily gathered at the 4:00 Mass to celebrate this wonderful day
(photo, above). The buckmans were married by Msgr. Kramer.
1 Seminarians at the Madison Bowl: The seminarians and some of the priests from the Athenaeum had a dinner and bowling night at the Madison bowl and Diner (photo, above). There were 50 seminarians that attended. They loved the big burgers and had a fun time bowling. i was glad i was able
to join them. 1 Fr. Jason and Pre-K: fr. Jason taught the pre-kindergarten students for their religion class. They are studying the animals that god created. fr. Jason read them some picture books about baby animals (photo, below), and they sang a song about creation. We are so grateful to join Ms. battaglia’s class each month.

Dresser Project 2017for quite a number of years, our parish has generously contributed to a “dresser project.”
Through this project, we collect baby items that will be donated, through Pregnancy Center
East, to a mother who has made the choice of life for her unborn child. Many parishioners find
this to be a very positive way to express their support for the pro-life movement. This year’s
dresser can be found in the vestibule with a list of suggested items. We are collecting baby items from January 21 through February 19. Your participation is welcome and appreciated!
