New Choir Members NeededWe are in need of new choir members to sing with us. If you have a musical talent to share with the community, we would love to have you join us. RCIA - The Rite of Christian Initiation of AdultsThe parish welcomes those seeking fuller participation in the life of the Church. RCIA is a program offered each year to those who wish to be baptized into the Catholic faith and to those who are already baptized Christians who wish to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. It is also for individuals baptized in the Catholic faith who have never received first Holy Communion. We meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. The first twelve weeks are considered an inquiry period with no formal commitment required, so all are welcome to register and come and see. If you or someone you know may be interested, please e-mail Scott MacDonald ([email protected]). RCIA sessions run from September 29, 2015 through April 19, 2016. The sessions are held in a classroom in our Parish Pastoral Center. RCIA participants are also expected to attend the 11:15 a.m. Mass together each Sunday.
Pie Sellers Needed! As part of our on-going relationship with Community Servings, we are looking for parishioners willing to assist with their annual Pie in the Sky fundraiser. Every Thanksgiving pie sold for $28 feeds a Community Servings client in Eastern Massachusetts suffering with a life-threatening illness for one week. The delicious pies—apple, pecan, pumpkin, and sweet potato—are baked by some of the best local restaurant chefs and caterers and are the perfect dessert for your Thanksgiving table. If you are willing to help sell pies at Saint Cecilia liturgies as well as to your friends and colleagues, please email Mark Lippolt at [email protected].

SAINT CECILIA PARISH
When 'happiness' eludes us — as, eventually, it always will — we have the invitation to examine our programmed responses and to exercise our power to choose again. Through exaggeration, confusion, and distortion, we have allowed our politics, our church and our families to fall out of emotional balance. We can learn to heal our reactive responses by seeking "emotional sobriety," which is really the task that we call contemplation.
Bill Wilson, one of the founders of the 12 Step Program of Alcoholics Anonymous, said that recovery was not complete until addicts achieved "emotional sobriety." In many ways he was saying the same thing that mystical religion recognized — authentic spirituality should lead to a total "rewiring" of both our conscious lives and our unconscious programming. It will not just change external behavior, but internal emotions and responses, our entire pattern of thinking.
Contemplation is not first of all about being religious, introverted, or pious — it is about being emotionally and mentally honest! Contemplation is an alternative consciousness that refuses to identify with or feed what are only passing shows. It is the absolute opposite of addiction, consumerism or any egoic consciousness.
Egoic consciousness is the one we all normally operate with, until we are told there is something else! Every culture teaches egoic consciousness in different ways. At that level it is all about me, my preferences, my choices, my needs, my desires and me and my group as the central reference point. It was religion's job to tell us about a different kind of software and the original word for it was simply prayer. But even the concept and practice of prayer became captive to the voracious needs of the ego. Even prayer became a way to get God to do what we wanted.
Thus we use the word contemplation so people might know we are talking about a totally different operating system, different software where the private self is not the center of attention and interpretation. This is the "grain of wheat" that Jesus says must die "or it remains
just a grain of wheat." But if it dies, "it bears much fruit" (John 12:24). Mature and contemplative religion has always known that we need a whole new operating system, which Paul called "the mind of Christ" (1 Corinthians 2:16) or a "spiritual revolution of the mind" (Ephesians 4:23).
Only with this new mind can we also develop a new heart and a new emotional response to the moment. When it is not all about me, I can see from a much deeper and broader set of eyes. In time our responses are much less knee jerk, predictable and self-centered. Only contemplative prayer touches the deep unconscious, where all of our real hurts, motivations and deepest visions lie. Without it, we have what is even worse — religious egoic consciousness, which is even more defensive and offensive than usual! Now it has God on its side and is surely what Jesus means by the unforgivable "sin against the Holy Spirit." It cannot be forgiven because this small self would never imagine it needs forgiveness. It is smug and self-satisfied.
We must learn and practice this new mind or there will be no real change, no authentic encounter with ourselves, God or anybody else. Find your own practice and learn a new mind. Contemplation really is the change that changes everything.
Fr. Richard Rohr is a globally recognized ecumenical teacher bearing witness to the universal awakening within Christian mysticism and the Perennial Tradition. He is a Franciscan priest of the New Mexico Province and founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC) in Albuquerque, NM. Fr. Richard's teaching is grounded in the Franciscan alternative orthodoxy—practices of contemplation and lived kenosis (self-emptying), expressing itself in radical compassion, particularly for the socially marginalized. Fr. Richard is author of numerous books, including Everything Belongs, Adam’s Return, The Naked Now, Breathing Under Water, Falling Upward, and Immortal Diamond: The Search for Our True Self. CAC is home to the Rohr Institute where Fr. Richard is Academic Dean of the Living School for Action and Contem-plation. Drawing upon Christianity’s place within the Peren-nial Tradition, the mission of the Rohr Institute is to produce compassionate and powerfully learned individuals who will work for positive change in the world based on awareness of our common union with God and all beings.

i Classes in our Faith Formation program began last Sunday, September 27 for grades K2 to grade 6. There is a separate schedule for children in grades 7 to 10. If you have not yet registered or paid, please be sure to do so today. Registration forms are available in the Parish Hall at the Faith Formation Resource Table. Please note that kindergarten and first grade will meet following the Gospel reading at the 9:30 a.m. Mass and will end at the conclusion of the liturgy; grades two through six will meet as soon as the 9:30 a.m. Mass is over and will end at 11:45 a.m. Parents must pick their children up from the classrooms at the end of class. Our seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth grade classes follow a different schedule and will meet on Sunday afternoons, usually twice a month.
i In order to register your child in our Faith Formation Program, you must be a registered parishioner. There are registration forms at the Faith Formation Resource Table in the Parish Hall or you can register on-line by visiting http://stceciliaboston.org/life-at-st-cecilias/becoming-a-registered-parishoner/permanent-parishioner-registration-form/. We also need a baptismal certificate from the church where your child was baptized. Simply call the church and ask them to either mail it to us or fax it to us at 617-536–1781. We would like all baptismal certificates as soon as possible.
i Children should never go to the restroom alone. We are happy that you feel so safe here, but please remember that we are in a building that is wide open and has multiple entrances. For the safety of our children, please do not allow them to wander around unsupervised and please do not ever allow them to go to the restroom unaccompanied by a parent. Children should be brought to the restroom before class begins.
i The children at the nine-thirty liturgy are invited to bring food for the poor up to the sanctuary in the offertory procession. Please try to remember to bring to Mass each Sunday some of the following items: peanut butter, tuna fish, canned chicken breast, Cheerios or Corn Flakes, white flour spaghetti, macaroni and cheese, tomato sauce. These are the items that our friends at Catholic Charities need most. We will do this every Sunday all year long. Please do not take food from the baskets in the narthex for the offertory procession. This food has already been donated once. Instead, please bring one of the above food items from home with you on Sunday.
i We are planning to train new altar servers. All children who are in fourth grade or beyond are invited to participate in this important ministry. If your child is interested in becoming an altar server, please e-mail Scott or watch the bulletin for the date and time of an upcoming training session.

PSC BOSTON SWIMMING is a weekly swim training, competition, and support group for swimmers of all ages and levels of skill development (and their coaches). HELP US CARE FOR THE POORAt least a few times each week, homeless men and women come to the parish office or approach a staff member after Mass looking for something to eat or a donation. While we do sometimes give out small amounts of money, we prefer to offer people a gift card to a local supermarket or fast food establishment. You have always responded generously to our appeal for gift cards, but once again, we are in need of having our supply replenished. If you are interested in helping out in this way, simply purchase a gift card and drop it in the collection basket at Mass or give the card to a staff person. At this point in time, gift cards to Shaw's, Dunkin' Donuts, and CVS would be most helpful. We are very appreciative of your assistance as we attempt to offer aid to the less fortunate in our midst.
dr. james o'connell discussionPlease join us on Sunday, October 25 following the 6:00 p.m. Mass for an author discussion with Dr. James J. O’Connell, author of Stories from the Shadows, Reflections of a Street Doctor. Dr. O’Connell is the founding physician and president of Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, which has been delivering homeless medical care to patients in over 60 shelters and sites throughout Greater Boston for over 30 years. Dr. O’Connell graduated from the University of Notre Dame and received a master’s degree in theology from Cambridge University and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at MGH. He juggles a busy clinical role on the BHCHP street team and is assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is the recipient of the Albert Schweitzer Humanitarian Award and the Trustees’ Medal from Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. O’Connell’s collection of stories and patient portraits explore some of the greatest health challenges of our time: the crises of AIDS, addiction and untreated mental illness; the financial and human costs of lack of access to primary care; and the inextricable link between poverty and poor health. Through it all, Dr. O’Connell finds joy, hope and inspiration in his patients and the reader in turn marvels at his ability to instill those same qualities in the men and women he cares for. Books will be available for purchase or can be ordered online at www.bhchp.org. For more information, contact Caroline at [email protected].
room for rent?Have an apartment to let, room for rent or sublet in or around the Back Bay area? If so, and interested to connect with a Saint Cecilia parishioner in need of a place to call home, please contact Caroline at [email protected]. A fellow parishioner is taking a semester off from school to focus on her health and would like to live in our neighbourhood, preferably renting from another parishioner. Thank you!
At its core, the environmental crisis is a moral challenge. It calls us to examine how we use and share the goods of the earth, what we pass on to future generations, and how we live in harmony with God's creation.

"Would that we could all be prophets! Would that all of us could be open to miracles of love for the sake of all the families of the world, and thus overcome the scandal of a narrow, petty love, closed in on itself, impatient of others!"

Pope Francis' Address to Congress
http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/24/
politics/pope-francis-congress-speech/
A journalist: Holy Father, you have become a star in the United States. Is it good for the Church if the Pope is a star?
Pope Francis: The Pope must… Do you know what the title was of the Pope that ought to be used? Servant of the servants of God. It’s a little different from the stars. Stars are beautiful to look at. I like to look at them in the summer when the sky is clear. But the Pope must be, must be the servant of the servants of God. Yes, in the media this is happening but there’s another truth. How many stars have we seen that go out and fall. It is a fleeting thing. On the other hand, being servant of the servants of God is something that doesn’t pass.
"I take this opportunity to thank all those, of whatever religion, who have sought to serve the God of peace by building cities of brotherly love, by caring for our neighbors in need, by defending the dignity of God’s gift of life in all its stages, by defending the cause of the poor and the immigrant. All too often, those most in need of our help are unable to be heard. You are their voice, and many of you have faithfully made their cry heard."
(Speech at Independence Mall, Philadelphia)
"The poorest are those who suffer most from such offenses, for three serious reasons: they are cast off by society, forced to live off what is discarded and suffer unjustly from the abuse of the environment. They are part of today's widespread and quietly growing 'culture of waste.'"
"The Son of God came into this world as a homeless person. The Son of God knew what it was to start life without a roof over his head."

A Letter fromthe Parish Finance Council
Dear Fellow Parishioners,
We are pleased to present the Saint Cecilia Parish Operating Statement for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2015 as well as the Budget for the current fiscal year.
The Operating Statement shows an operating surplus for last fiscal year of $162,544. This represents a considerable improvement over last year’s operating deficit of $17,568. The reasons for the improvement are twofold: better control of our expenses and the increased generosity of our parishioners.
As we look to the budget for this fiscal year, we anticipate an operating deficit of $22,566. This deficit is primarily due to conservative income projections as well as a potential increase in salary expense. We have been cautious with the income projection, but believe there is a good chance we will exceed the income of the past year. We have projected an increase in salary expense since we continue to search for a Pastoral Director of Operations. Our goal is to be break even for this fiscal year. Accordingly, we will adjust our expenses in the future if we do in fact run an operating deficit.
You will notice a new line item in the operating statement – Reserve for Future Capital Repairs. The Finance Council has been concerned for some time that we have no reserve funds to meet major building repair expenses which surely will occur at some time in the future. We have not been able to establish an account for this purpose until now because all available funds were used to retire the debt with the Archdiocese incurred during the renovation five years ago. The debt is now fully paid, and we have established the reserve account. Each year we will add to the reserve as our finances permit.
We conclude this report with a very special thank you to those parishioners who participate in the Offertory Commitment Program (OCP) program. Our OCP remains the cornerstone of the parish's financial health, generating more than $500,000 of our $817,094 in “Sunday Offertory Income” last year. If you have not already done so, we encourage you to please consider joining the 400 plus parishioner households currently enrolled in the program. Please contact Mark Donohoe at 617-536-4548 ext. 115 or [email protected] for more information.
We hope that this brief summary of the parish’s financial position is helpful to you. If you have questions concerning any of it, please feel free to contact any member of the Finance Council.
Thank you for your continued prayer and support of our parish as we go forward in faith.
