Volpe by Daughter A Blessed Mother’s Day “Righteous Father, the world also does not know you, but I know you... I made known to them your name and I will make it known, that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them.” FROM SUNDAY’S GOSPEL READING FROM JOHN 17 This past weekend, more than a dozen of our little ones celebrated First Holy Communion at Good Samaritan and Saint John the Baptist. It was such a sight to watch them process out of church with their little hands neatly folded in front of them. It felt a little nostalgic to recognize that I had baptized a few of them. I couldn’t help but wonder if I would still be around to celebrate their wedding some day. One of the First Communicants was actually the first child I baptized here as a newly ordained priest. I have to laugh when I think of how a parent once asked me at a baptism if I was going to hold the baby high in the air as I walked down the aisle like Father Joe Freedy used to do when he was here. They seemed disappointed when I said I don’t do that. The truth be told, I seldom hold babies, even at a baptism. I’m terrified of breaking one. Though I’ve been reassured that they are pretty hard to break, I’m scared to take the chance. It’s so appropriate that we celebrate Mother’s Day this weekend on the heels of celebrating First Holy Communion in the parish. After all, it’s the moms and dads of these children who bring them to church each week and teach them to practice the faith that they received from their parents. It’s true that the religion teachers and CCD instructors provide them with the basic knowledge of the faith, but it is the moms and dads who are really the first and most important teachers of the faith. They are the ones who practice the prayers with the kids, making sure they know how to pray the Our Father and the Hail Mary, as well as their Act of Contrition. At the end of the Baptismal Rite, there is a blessing for the mother and father of the child who has just been baptized. In part, the words of the blessing are: God the Father, through His Son, the Virgin Mary’s child, has brought joy to all Christian mothers, as they see the hope of eternal life shine on their children. May He bless the mother of this child.” then the priest or deacon goes on to say, God is the giver of all life, human and divine. May He bless the father of this child. He and his wife will be the first teachers of their child in the ways of faith. May they be also the best of teachers, bearing witness to the faith by what they say and do.” I recently had the honor of Anointing someone who was dying. With a sad smile, his sister noticed that as we prayed the Our Father, he neatly folded his hands, just as he had done at his First Communion. I can’t help but think how proud his mom would be to know that the lessons she taught him decades ago still endured. What better gift could you give your child? A blessed Mother’s Day to our moms, everywhere.

A Blessed Mother’s Day

“Righteous Father, the world also does not know you, but I know you... I made known to them your name and I will make it known, that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them.” FROM SUNDAY’S GOSPEL READING FROM JOHN 17

This past weekend, more than a dozen of our little ones celebrated First Holy Communion at Good Samaritan and Saint John the Baptist. I have to laugh when I think of how a parent once asked

me at a baptism if I was going to hold the baby high in the air as I walked down the aisle like Father Joe Freedy used to do when he was here. They seemed disappointed when I said I don’t do that. The truth be told, I seldom hold babies, even at a baptism. I’m terrified of breaking one. Though I’ve been reassured that they are pretty hard to break, I’m scared to take the chance. It’s so appropriate that we celebrate Mother’s Day this

weekend on the heels of celebrating First Holy Communion in the parish. In part, the words of the blessing are:

“God the Father, through His Son, the Virgin Mary’s

child, has brought joy to all Christian mothers, as they see

the hope of eternal life shine on their children. May He

bless the mother of this child.” then the priest or deacon goes on to say, “God is the giver of all life, human and

divine. May He bless the father of this child. He and his

wife will be the first teachers of their child in the ways of

faith. May they be also the best of teachers, bearing

witness to the faith by what they say and do.”

I recently had the honor of Anointing someone who was dying. With a sad smile, his sister noticed that as we prayed the Our Father, he neatly folded his hands, just as he had done at his First Communion. POOR BOXES Have you noticed The Poor Boxes in the back of our church? Do you know what happens to the money that is put in The Poor Boxes? All the money collected goes to St. John’s Saint Vincent de Paul Society. The Society helps those less fortunate in our area and in our parish. Examples of the help the Society gives are: payment of rent so someone is not homeless, payment of utility bills so utilities are not shut off; help with groceries, gas and even burial expenses, just to name a few. So the next time you are leaving Mass and pass the Poor Boxes, think about dropping in loose change or folded paper currency; you will be helping the less fortunate in our area and parish. God bless you for whatever you can donate. The Saint Vincent de Paul Society greatly appreciates your generosity.
