John the Baptist was called from his mother’s womb. The annunciation of his conception to Zecha-riah in the Temple, Saturday’s Gospel, and the nam-ing of the child with the name provided by God, Sunday’s Gospel, explains how God had a special mission for John to fulfill. When Mary visited Elizabeth, Elizabeth exclaimed, “The baby in my womb stirred when we heard the sound of your voice.” Today’s feast points out that from the first moment of his life, John was an important part of God’s plan. John was announcing the coming of the savior. God’s plan for man’s salvation was first re-vealed by the prophets. It was set into motion when Mary agreed to be the mother of the Son of God at the Annunciation, and it was announced to the world by John when he proclaimed in his preaching that Jesus was the Lamb of God. This plan is not com-plete. The plan will not be complete until the entire world embraces the Kingdom of God. The plan will not be complete until each of us and those who come after us assume our own mission in salvation history. We have a certain role in building up the kingdom of God. John is an example for us. We need to boldly go out in society and share the “good news” of Jesus. It will be challenging, for these are challenging times. The message however is a power-ful one. It is a message of hope, a message of mercy, a message of compassion, a message of love and simply a message of peace. We are called to do far more than just witness God’s wonders. We are also part of God’s plan. We have a function, a responsibility to the Kingdom. What exactly is your role? What is my role? We know in general, but the specifics become more evident as life progresses. Once we know what our talents are, we must use them for God. We are all part of God’s plan. Like John we have been named by God. This took place at our baptism. We have been given the mission to lead the world to God, in ways general to our state of life and specific to our own talents. Like John, we have a responsi-bility to use our lives to point to the Savior■

When the Church celebrates the feast day of a saint, we are usually celebrating the day of the saint’s death—what you might call the saint’s “supernatural birthday”—the day on which they entered heaven. But the Church also cele-brates the natural days of birth of three per-sons: Christ Jesus, of course, on the feast we call Christmas; the Blessed Virgin Mary, on September 8th, nine months after the feast of Mary’s Immaculate Conception; and Saint John the Baptist, on this day which falls sixth months before Christmas eve.

Considering this celebration of St. John’s birth, we see more clearly the relationship with John and his cousin Jesus. Their relation-ship is an intimate one, and yet also one of strong contrasts. In the same way, by celebrat-ing the birth of Saint John we see more clearly what our own relationships with Our Lord are to be like. John and Jesus were cousins by nature. Each one of us is a brother or sister of Jesus by vir-tue of our supernatural baptism into the Pas-chal Mystery. John and Jesus each had a mes-sage to proclaim to others. We are obligated to listen to each of these messages, and to follow each of them in turn. St. Augustine comments on today’s Gospel passage in saying that:

The release of Zechariah’s voice at the birth of John is a parallel to the rending of the veil at Christ’s crucifixion. If John were announcing his own coming, Zechariah’s lips would not have been opened. The tongue is loosened be-cause a voice is born. … The voice is John, but the Lord in the beginning was the Word. John was a voice that lasted only for a time; Christ, the Word in the beginning, is eternal.

We are called to imitate John: we are called to be the voice which speaks the gospel of Christ Jesus to others. Yet in this Eucharist, we are called to consume the Word made flesh, and so strengthened, imitate Christ Jesus, to offer our lives in sacrifice for others. The penance of John prepares us each day to renounce our sinful selves. The Sacrifice of Christ prepares us each day to offer our sanctified selves for the sake of Christ’s Body in this world.

Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her, and they rejoiced with her. When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child, they were going to call him Zechariah after his father, but his mother said in reply, “No, He will be called John.” But they an-swered her, “There is no one among your relatives who has this name.” So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called. He asked for a tablet and wrote, “John is his name,” and all were amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed, and he spoke blessing God. Then fear came upon all their neighbors, and all these matters were discussed throughout the hill country of Judea. All who heard these things took them to heart, saying, “What, then, will this child be?” For surely the hand of the Lord was with him. The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the desert until the day of his manifesta-tion to Israel. The Gospel of the Lord.

L’inquietudine della notte della fede

Ripartire da Dio vuol dire sapere che noi non lo vediamo, ma lo crediamo e lo cerchiamo così come

la notte cerca l’aurora. Vuol dunque dire vivere per sé e contagiare altri dell’inquietudine santa di una ricerca senza sosta del volto nascosto del Padre. Come Paolo fece coi Galati e coi Romani, così anche noi dobbiamo denunciare ai nostri contemporanei la miopia del contentarsi di tutto ciò che è meno di Dio, di tutto quanto può divenire idolo. Dio è più grande del nostro cuore, Dio sta oltre la notte. Egli è nel silenzio che ci turba davanti alla morte e alla fine di ogni grandezza umana; Egli è nel bisogno di giustizia e di amore che ci portiamo dentro; Egli è il Mistero santo che viene incontro alla nostalgia del Totalmente Altro, nostalgia di perfetta e consumata giustizia, di riconciliazione e di pace. Come il credente Manzoni, anche noi dobbiamo lasciarci interrogare da ogni dolore: dallo scandalo della violenza che sembra vittoriosa, dalle atrocità dell’odio e delle guerre, dalla fatica di credere nell’Amore quando tutto sembra contraddirlo. Dio è un fuoco divorante, che si fa piccolo per lasciarsi afferrare e toccare da noi. Portando Gesù in mezzo a voi, non ho potuto non pensare a questa umiliazione, a questa “contrazione” di Dio, come la chiamavano i Padri della Chiesa, a questa debolezza. Essa si fa risposta alle nostre domande non nella misura della grandezza e della potenza di questo mondo, ma nella piccolezza, nell’umiltà, nella compagnia umile e pellegrinante del nostro soffrire. Anche il sonno di Cristo è un segno esteriore di una realtà nascosta. Sono come dei naviganti quelli che fanno la traversata di questa vita su di un’imbarcazione. Anche quella barca era figura della chiesa. E ogni persona è tempio di Dio, naviga nel proprio cuore e non fa naufragio, se prova buoni sentimenti. Se hai udito un’offesa, è come il vento; sei adirato? Ecco la tempesta. Se soffia il vento e giunge la tempesta, corre pericolo la nave, corre pericolo il tuo cuore ed è agitato. All’udire l’offesa, desideri vendicarti; ecco, ti sei vendicato e, godendo del male altrui, hai fatto naufragio. E perché? Perché Cristo in te dorme. Che cosa significa: «In te Cristo dorme»? Che ti sei dimenticato di Cristo. Risveglia dunque Cristo, ricordati di Cristo, sia desto in te Cristo, considera lui. Che cosa volevi? Volevi vendicarti. Ti eri dimenticato che egli, essendo crocifisso, disse: «Padre, perdona loro perché non sanno quello che fanno» [Lc 23,24]. Egli che dormiva nel tuo cuore non volle vendicarsi. Sveglialo e ricordalo. Il ricordo di lui è la sua parola, il ricordo di lui è il suo comando. Se in te è desto Cristo, tu dirai tra te e te: «Che razza di uomo sono io che mi voglio vendicare? Chi sono io, che mi permetto di minacciare un altro? Forse morrò prima di vendicarmi. E quando ansante, infiammato di collera e assetato di vendetta, uscirò da questo corpo, non mi accoglierà Colui che non volle vendicarsi, non mi accoglierà colui che disse: «Date e vi sarà dato, perdonate e vi sarà perdonato» [Lc 6,37-38]. Frenerò allora la mia collera e tornerò alla pace del mio cuore». Cristo comandò al mare e si fece una grande bonaccia. In tutte le altre vostre tentazioni attenetevi a ciò che ho detto riguardo all’ira. Quando sorge una tentazione, è come il vento; tu sei agitato, c’è la tempesta. Sveglia Cristo affinché parli con te. [...] Imita i venti e il mare: ubbidisci al Creatore!

HOMILIA, DOMINGO XII DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO (Marcos, 4,35-41)

CONSTRUIR LA VIDA SOBRE LA ROCA, PARA NO PERDER LA FE, ANTE LOS MIEDOS Y

FRACASOS? !Porque tienen tanto miedo a las tormentas! ¿Aún no tenéis fe? No nos resulta siempre fácil hablar sinceramente de nuestras crisis de fe ni de los combates que secretamente mantenemos en el fondo de nuestra conciencia. Por ello no es extraño que se vayan generalizando en nuestros días una serie de expresiones fáciles y de tópicos con los que algunos tratan de definir su postura personal ante la fe.

Son frases que se van extendiendo entre nosotros y que, tal vez, requerirían una reflexión más seria.

“Soy creyente pero no practicante”. Así se definen hoy bastantes, como si esas palabras expresaran el posicionamiento acabado y perfecto de quien ha descubierto la postura irreprochable y progresista de vivir hoy la fe.

Pero, ¿qué significa en realidad ser creyente y no practicante? ¿Incoherencia personal? ¿Arrinconamiento de la fe al “cuarto trasero»? ¿Incapacidad para poner en práctica, de manera consecuente, las exigencias de la fe? No parece fácil alimentar responsablemente la fe cuando uno nunca la celebra, la recuerda o la comparte con otros creyentes.

“No sé si tengo fe”.

Comprendo muy bien a los que hablan así desde el fondo de la incertidumbre. Sé que la fe está tejida muchas veces de crisis y dudas y que el creyente se purifica y crece en la búsqueda no siempre fácil de Dios. Pero, ¿no significa a veces esa frase precisamente lo contrario? ¿Un dejación en la búsqueda? ¿Una falta de experiencia personal de la fecomprometiida.¿No son bastantes los que abandonan hoy la fe sin haberla conocido ni gustado?

«He perdido la fe»: Estas son las palabras que he escuchado a más de uno, sin observar en su rostro el menor sentimiento de pena o pesar. Y, sin embargo, estas palabras encierran para mí una verdadera desgracia porque perder la fe es realmente “perder”. Salir perdiendo. Perder vida y luz interior. Perder energía humanizadora y esperanza. Perder la capacidad de mirar la existencia hasta el final con confianza. Perder el camino esencial. Perderse lo más importante.

No estoy hablando de otros. Estas frases que hoy comento podrían salir en más de una ocasión de labios de quienes nos decimos creyentes. Todos hemos de escuchar desde muy dentro las preguntas de Jesús: “¿Por qué sois tan cobardes? ¿Por qué no tenéis fe?”.
