This must take place 1 month prior to Baptism. Baptisms are celebrated on the 2nd Sunday of every month at 2:45PM. Instruction Class is required which will be on the Thursday two weeks before Baptism at 7:00PM. Ezekiel was told to proclaim the truth, even though he would be rejected by the people and their leaders. That was this Sunday’s first reading. 2,000 years ago, people re-fused to accept the Messiah of God when He stood right before them because Jesus did not fit their pre-conceived notion of what the Messiah should be like. “He shouldn’t be one of us,” they said. “We shouldn’t know him or his family,” they argued. That was today’s Gospel. If the prophets were ignored and if Jesus Himself was disregarded, then how can we expect people to listen to us when we pro-claim the Gospel? We are certainly no bet-ter than Paul who tells us about his weak-ness in today’s second reading. We are also weak; and we do dumb things, lots of them. We sin. We ask people to listen to us, turn from sin and put Christ into the center of their lives. Do we really have a right to even attempt to do this? Yes. In fact, we have more than a right. We have a responsibility. We have a responsibility to lead others to God. We need to call others to Christ knowing that if they hear our call and follow Christ it will be because Jesus worked though us, despite our weakness. It is important that we do not allow any-thing to stand in our way to Jesus Christ. That includes what others think about us and what we think about our-selves. It does not matter if others think less of us because we reject the immorality of many elements of our society. The soci-ety that matters to us is the Kingdom of God. It does not matter that we might find opposition to what we believe. Jesus never promised us that our path would be easy. He just promised us that He would be with us until the end of time■

What are the responsibilities of deacons in the church?
In the New Testament, the word usually translated "serve" is the Greek word diakoneo, which literally means "through the dirt." It refers to an attendant, a waiter, or one who ministers to another. From this word we get
the English word “deacon.” We first see the word "deacon" used this way in the book of Acts. “And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, "It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables” (Acts 6:2). The men who were giving themselves to feeding the flock by preaching and teaching realized that it wasn’t right for them to leave those activities to wait tables, so they
found some other men who were willing to serve, and put them in place to minister to the church’s physical needs while the elders or pastors ministered to their spiritual needs. It was a better use of the resources they were given, and a better use of everyone’s gifts. It also got more people involved in serving and helping one
another. A deacon is an ‘ordained’ minister and should be addressed simply as Deacon
Today, for the biblical church, these roles are essentially the same. Elders and pastors are to “preach the word…reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching” (2 Timothy 4:2), and deacons are to be appointed to take care of everything else. In a modern church, this might include taking on administra-tive or organizational tasks, ushering, being responsible for building maintenance, or volunteering to be the
church treasurer. It depends on the need and the gifts of the available men.
The responsibilities of a deacon are not clearly listed or outlined; they are assumed to be everything that does not include the duties of an elder or pastor, which is to preach, teach, and exhort. But qualifications for a dea-
con’s character are clearly outlined in Scripture. They are to be blameless, the husband of one wife, a good household manager, respectable, honest, not addicted to alcohol and not greedy (1 Timothy 3:8-12). Accord-ing to the Word, the office of deacon is an honor and a blessing. “For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 3:13).

Be Mindful of Attire at Mass
Summer has come. The weather is getting nicer and the temperature is getting warmer. This is a reminder that we need to be aware that certain clothing may not be appropriate to wear while at-tending mass. The mass is the ultimate prayer to God. We have an obligation to be properly dressed to show our love, reverence and respect to God. We can dress modestly and still be comfortable. We dress appropriately and dignified for special events in our lives; shouldn’t God receive that same attention. ———————————————————— Remember to go to Mass every Sunday. We may have vacation but it is not from the Lord, who loves us completely. If you are traveling, you have the responsibility of finding a place for Sun-day Mass. If you have difficulty locating a church for Mass, go to www.masstimes.org. You can put in the zip code or location of where you will be and see what the local Mass schedule is. And while you are away, please remember to support your parish—we depend on your contributions! If you have some extra time during the summer because of a change in your schedule, or because of vacation, why not come to Mass more often? Come to the Eucharist during the week. The extra time you have can be used so well, but often we fail to put our time to the best possible use. May everyone have a blessed and refreshing sum-mer.
Gospel– Mark 6:1-6a Jesus departed from there and came to his na-tive place, accompanied by his disciples. When the Sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished. They said, “Where did this man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given him? What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands! Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house.” So he was not able to perform any mighty deeds there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith. The Gospel of the Lord.

Nella storia, nel quotidiano più ordinario, il Dio eterno si fa prossimo dell’uomo. Attira la sua attenzione e gli invia dei “segni”: per esempio, facciamo l’esperienza inattesa del
suo aiuto; incontriamo un uomo che testimonia di lui con forza. La sua preghiera ci coinvolge e noi “prendiamo gusto a essere con Dio”. Ascoltiamo la sua parola in modo nuovo. Scopriamo subito il suo intervento negli avvenimenti della nostra vita e scopri-
amo sempre più chiaramente il “filo conduttore”. Ma può accadere che talvolta per-cepiamo l’incontro con lui come una esigenza che ci disturba, che ci irrita e ci provoca.
È necessario abbandonare la terra ferma, osar affrontare l’ignoto, forse cambiare. E subito ricominciamo a fare questi ragionamenti: Perché dare un senso particolare a
tale avvenimento? Non è piuttosto il caso a ordinare tutto, le leggi naturali come gli ob-blighi sociali? Perché prendere le elucubrazioni del nostro spirito come “messaggi di Dio”? Uno psicologo potrebbe spiegare meglio i diversi motivi delle nostre reazioni.
Il nostro io percepisce un rischio, e rifiuta, per pigrizia o per autodifesa. Peggio: la nostra vita prende allora una cattiva direzione.
Gesù viene nella sua città natale. L’interesse che suscita aumenta sempre di più. Il suo insegnamento suscita meraviglia. Da lui emana una saggezza indicibile. Ma molto presto l’attrattiva che egli esercita si altera: La gente è stupita: “Donde gli vengono
queste cose? Non è costui il carpentiere?”, rampollo di una famiglia ordinaria? E tras-metterebbe una nuova dottrina? Annuncerebbe una esigenza?
Era certamente in gioco l’invidia. E soprattutto il “buon senso”. È per questa ragione che i contemporanei di Gesù rifiutano di riconoscere l’azione di Dio nell’avvenimento. E non è tutto: deformano l’evento di Cristo e lo trasformano in
“scandalo”, in una forza del male che spinge al peccato. Tale interpretazione “tenebrosa” finisce per rassicurarli, dopo una simile provocazione.
Ecco una tranquillità pagata molto cara! La fede in Dio e la redenzione in Gesù Cristo diventano inaccessibili. Invece, gli abitanti di Nazaret avrebbero dovuto rischiare di ab-bandonarsi. Soltanto colui che ha una relazione di intimità con il Redentore sarà salvato. Colui che si è blindato nell’autoconservazione rimane chiuso alla salvezza. E sospettare con cattiveria che l’attrazione di Cristo sia una tentazione contro Dio in realtà non fa che
rassicurare il suo egoismo, per quanto “ragionevoli” possano apparire i suoi argomenti.

Cuando ya se había hecho popular y famoso por sus milagros y su enseñanza, Jesús volvió un día a su lugar de origen, Nazaret, y como de costumbre se puso a enseñar en la sinagoga. Pero esta vez no suscitó ningún entusiasmo, ningún ¡ hosanna!. Más que escuchar cuanto decía y juzgarle según ello, la gente se puso a hacer considera-ciones ajenas: «¿De dónde ha sacado esta sabiduría? No ha estudiado; le cono-cemos bien; es el carpintero, ¡el hijo de María!». «Y se escandalizaban de Él», o sea, encontraban un obstáculo para creerle en el hecho de que le conocían bien. Jesús comentó amargamente: «Un profeta sólo en su patria, entre sus parientes y en su casa carece de prestigio». Esta frase se ha convertido en proverbial en la forma abreviada: Nemo propheta in patria, nadie es profeta en su tierra. Pero esto es sólo una curiosidad. El pasaje evangélico nos lanza también una advertencia implícita que podemos resumir así: ¡atentos a no cometer el mismo error que cometieron los naza-renos! En cierto sentido, Jesús vuelve a su patria cada vez que su Evangelio es anunciado en los países que fueron, en un tiempo, la cuna del cristianismo. Nuestra Italia, y en general Europa, son, para el cristianismo, lo que era Nazaret para Jesús: «el lugar donde fue criado» (el cristianismo nació en Asia, pero creció en Eu-ropa, ¡un poco como Jesús había nacido en Belén, pero fue criado en Nazaret!). Hoy corren el mismo riesgo que los nazarenos: no reconocer a Jesús. La carta consti-tucional de la nueva Europa unida no es el único lugar del que Él es actualmente «expulsado»... El episodio del Evangelio nos enseña algo importante. Jesús nos deja libres; pro-pone, no impone sus dones. Aquel día, ante el rechazo de sus paisanos, Jesús no se abandonó a amenazas e invectivas. No dijo, indignado, como se cuenta que hizo Publio Escipión, el africano, dejando Roma: «Ingrata patria, ¡no tendrás mis hue-sos!». Sencillamente se marchó a otro lugar. Una vez no fue recibido en cierto pueblo; los discípulos indignados le propusieron hacer bajar fuego del cielo, pero Jesús se volvió y les reprendió (Lc 9, 54). Así actúa también hoy. «Dios es tímido». Tiene mucho más respeto de nuestra liber-tad que la que tenemos nosotros mismos, los unos de la de los otros. Esto crea una gran responsabilidad. San Agustín decía: «Tengo miedo de Jesús que pasa» (Timeo Jesum transeuntem). Podría, en efecto, pasar sin que me percate, pasar sin que yo esté dispuesto a acogerle. Su paso es siempre un paso de gracia. Marcos dice sintéticamente que, habiendo lle-gado a Nazaret en sábado, Jesús «se puso a enseñar en la sinagoga». Pero el Evan-gelio de Lucas especifica también qué enseñó y qué dijo aquel sábado. Dijo que había venido «para anunciar a los pobres la Buena Nueva, para proclamar la lib-eración a los cautivos y la vista a los ciegos; para dar la libertad a los oprimidos y pro-clamar un año de gracia del Señor» (Lucas 4, 18-19). Lo que Jesús proclamaba en la sinagoga de Nazaret era, por lo tanto, el primer ju-bileo cristiano de la historia, el primer gran «año de gracia», del que todos los jubileos y «años santos» son una conmemoración.
