The Ho ly Rosary

The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary. According to an ac-count by fifteenth-century Dominican, Alan de la Roch, Mary appeared to St. Dominic in 1206 after he had been praying and doing severe penances be-cause of his lack of success in combating the Albigensian heresy. Mary praised him for his valiant fight against the heretics and then gave him the Rosary as a mighty weapon, explained its uses and efficacy, and told him to preach it to others. "Since the prayers of the Rosary come from such excellent sources — from Our Lord Himself, from inspired Scripture, and from the Church — it is not surprising that the Rosary is so dear to our Blessed Mother and so powerful with heaven. "If we consider the power of the Rosary as seen in its effects, we find a great abundance of proofs of its wonderful value. Many are the favors granted to private individuals through its devout recitation: there are few devoted users of the Rosary who cannot testify to experiencing its power in their own lives. If we turn to history, we see many great triumphs of the Rosary. Early tradition attrib-utes the defeat of the Albigensians at the Battle of Muret in 1213 to the Rosary. But even those who do not accept this tradition will admit that St. Pius V attribut-ed the great defeat of the Turkish fleet on the first Sunday of October, 1571, to the fact that at the same time the Rosary confraternities at Rome and else-where were holding their processions. Accordingly, he ordered a commemora-tion of the Rosary to be made on that day. Two years later, Gregory XIII allowed the celebration of a feast of the Rosary in churches having an altar dedicated to the Rosary. In 1671, Clement X extended the feast to all Spain. A second great victory over the Turks, who once, like the Russians, threatened the ruin of Christian civilization, occurred on August 5, 1716, when Prince Eugene defeated them at Peterwardein in Hungary. Thereupon Clement XI extended the feast of the Rosary to the whole Church.

"Today, when dangers far greater than those of the ancient Turks threaten not only Christianity but all civilization, we are urged by our Blessed Mother to turn again to the Rosary for help. If men in sufficient numbers do this, and at the same time carry out the other conditions that she has laid down, we have the greater reason for confidence that we will be delivered from our dangers." -- Mary in our Life by Fr. William G. Most

The Rosary and the L i tu rg ica l Year The Rosary had its origin in the liturgical mentality of former ages. Even at the present time it is called "Mary's Psalter." There still are Catholics who consider the 150 Hail Marys a substitute for the 150 psalms for those persons who neither have the time, the education, nor the opportunity to pray the Hours of the Divine Of-fice. Thus "Mary's Psalter" is a shortened, simplified "breviary" — alongside the common Hour-prayer of the Church. — The Church's Year of Grace, Dr. Pius Parsch

Ho ly Guard ian Angel s

The notion of an angel assigned to guide and nurture each human being is a development of Catholic doctrine and piety based on Scripture. Jesus’ words in Matthew 18:10 best support the belief: “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.” October 2 is the Memorial of the Guardian angels. Devotion to the angels began to develop with the birth of the monastic tradition. Saint Benedict gave it impetus and Saint Ber-nard of Clairvaux, the great 12th-century re-former, was such an eloquent spokesman for the guardian angels that angelic devotion as-sumed its current form in his day. A feast in honor of the guardian angels was first observed in the 16th century. In 1615, Pope Paul V added it to the Roman calendar. Pope St. John XXIII wrote a Meditation for the Feast of the Guardian Angels, which reads, in part: "We must remember how admirable was the intention of divine Providence in entrusting to the angels the mission of watching over all mankind, and over individual human beings, lest they should fall victims to the grave dangers which they encounter.” A Prayer to One’s Guardian Angel

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

Lighthouse CD of the Week Praying the Rosary Like Never Before by Dr. Edward Sri

Dr. Edward Sri, who appears regularly on EWTN, and is a founding leader of FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic Universi-ty Students). In this discussion, Dr. Sri shares John Paul II's practical strategies for praying the Rosary better, so that you can encounter Jesus more deeply in prayer.

Parishioner Comments: “This talk makes understanding the rosary very easy. The talk makes the rosary exciting. It ben-efited my understanding of the rosary; it's not an old tradi-tional prayer, but a very lively and exciting prayer that will bring you close to God!” “The rosary is all about Jesus... from now on, ‘praying’ the rosary will be much more than ‘reciting’ the rosary!” Your generous donations to cover our cost assure contin-ued availability of these wonderful resources!

Continued from page 2… The Rosary is Christocentric, setting forth the entire life of Jesus Christ, the passion, death, resurrection and glory. Of course, the Rosary honors and contemplates Mary too, and rightly so, for the same reason that the Liturgical Year does likewise: "Because of the mission she received from God, her life is most closely linked with the mysteries of Jesus Christ, and there is no one who has followed in the footsteps of the Incarnate Word more closely and with more merit than she (Mediator Dei). Meditation on this cycle of Joyful, Sorrow-ful, Glorious and Luminous Mysteries makes the Rosary not only "a breviary or summary of the Gospel and of Christian lie,” but also a compendium of the Liturgical Year. Therewith the Rosary stands revealed as a dynamic teach-er and nurturer of Christian faith, morality, and spiritual per-fection, fostering in various ways faith, hope, charity, and the other virtues, and mediating special graces, all to the end that we may become more and more like unto Christ. — Mariology,Juniper B. Carol, O.F.M.

The Rosary and the Popes

No form of extra-liturgical devotion to Mary is more widely practiced among the faithful or found by them to be more satisfyingly complete than the Rosary, which has come to be regard-ed as the very badge of Catholic pie-ty. No form of extra-liturgical devotion to Mary has been recommended more warmly or frequently by the Popes. With perhaps two exceptions, all the Sovereign Pontiffs from Sixtus IV in 1478 down to John XXIII, especially

Leo XIII (in 23 documents, ten of them encyclicals entirely on the Rosary) and his successors, have extolled this form of prayer, which has been the favorite, moreover, of such saints as Teresa of Avila, Francis de Sales, Louis de Montfort, Alphonsus Liguori, Don Bosco, Bernadette, and many more. The authentic Rosary is a happy combination of vocal and mental prayer, each of which is essential to the devotion. It is incorrect to say that meditation is "the very essence of the Rosary devotion," for vocal recitation of the prayers is also of the essence. Meditation is, of course, the nobler

element, the "soul," while vocal prayer is the "body" of the devotion. The Rosary, Pope Leo XIII declared, "is composed of two parts, distinct but inseparable — the meditation on the mysteries and the recitation of the prayers. It is thus a kind of prayer that requires not only some raising of the soul to God, but also a particular and explicit atten-tion" (Incunda semper). Hence, as Pope Pius XI stated, they err "who consider this devotion merely a boresome formula repeated with monotonous and singsong intona-tion" (Ingravescentibus malis). Moreover, as Pius XI put it, "both piety and love, although always breathing forth the same words, do not, however, repeat the same thing, but they fervently express something ever new which the lov-ing heart always sends forth." And finally, in the words of Pius XII, "the recitation of identical formulas, repeated so many times, rather than rendering the prayer sterile and boring, has on the contrary the admirable quality of infus-ing confidence in him who prays, and brings to bear a gentle compulsion on the motherly heart of Mary (Ingravescentibus malis). — Mariology,Juniper B. Carol, O.F.M. Pope Benedict XVI in an address at the Basilica of St. Mary Major where he prayed the rosary with the faithful said:

Today, together we confirm that the Holy Rosary is not a pious practice banished to the past, like prayers of oth-er times thought of with nostalgia. Instead, the Rosary is experiencing a new Springtime. Without a doubt, this is one of the most eloquent signs of love that the young generation nourish for Jesus and his Mother, Mary. In the current world, so dispersive, this prayer helps to put Christ at the centre, as the Virgin did, who meditated within all that was said about her Son, and also what he did and said. When reciting the Rosary, the important and meaningful moments of salvation history are re-lived. The various steps of Christ's mission are traced. With Mary the heart is oriented toward the mystery of Jesus. Christ is put at the centre of our life, of our time, of our city, through the contemplation and meditation of his holy mysteries of joy, light, sorrow and glory. May Mary help us to welcome within ourselves the grace emanating from these mysteries, so that through us we can "water" society, beginning with our daily relation-ships, and purifying them from so many negative forces, thus opening them to the newness of God. The Rosary, when it is prayed in an authentic way, not mechanical and superficial but profoundly, it brings, in fact, peace and reconciliation. It contains within itself the healing power of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, invoked with faith and love at the centre of each "Hail Mary"

Thanksgiving After Mass St. Thomas Aquinas Lord, Father all-powerful and ever-living God, I thank You, for even though I am a sinner, your unprofitable servant, not because of my worth but in the kindness of your mer-cy, You have fed me with the Precious Body & Blood of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

I pray that this Holy Communion may not bring me condemnation and punishment but forgiveness and salva-tion. May it be a helmet of faith and a shield of good will. May it purify me from evil ways and put an end to my evil passions. May it bring me charity and patience, humility and obedience, and growth in the power to do good.

May it be my strong defense against all my enemies, visible and invisible, and the perfect calming of all my evil impuls-es, bodily and spiritual. May it unite me more closely to you, the One true God, and lead me safely through death to everlasting happiness with You.

And I pray that You will lead me, a sinner, to the banquet where you, with Your Son and holy Spirit, are true and per-fect light, total fulfillment, everlasting joy, gladness without end, and perfect happiness to your saints. grant this through Christ our Lord, AMEN.

How to go to Confession In order to make a good confession, we examine our conscience, asking God’s help to know our sins and to be truly sorry for them.

R i te of Reconci l iat ion

Priest: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Penitent: Amen. Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been (say how long) since my last confession. My sins are (confess your sins). When you are done, the priest will give you spiritu-al advice and assign a penance. He will then ask you to pray an Act of Contrition, for example: Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

- or- O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they have offended Thee, my God, Who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve wit the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen. The Priest then says the Prayer of Absolution while the penitent listens. At the conclusion of the pray-er, make the sign of the Cross and say, “Amen.” Priest: Go in peace. Penitent: Thanks be to God.

Complete your penance as soon as possible. If you were giv-en prayers to say, try to pray them in church before departing.

Havana Nights Gala Thank you to everyone who attended the gala and sup-ported our school! It was a successful and fun night in our community. Thank you to the auction co-chairs, Ali Rue Hanst and Jennifer Ganim for your hard work and dedica-tion and to Mr. Gerry Donohue for your support and dedi-cation to SEASCS.

We are proud to announce we are selling SEASCS STRONG Texas vinyl decals with all proceeds going to those SEASCS families affected by the floods. For $10 you too can show your support! Pilgrimage to Germany and Austria with Fr. Paul Lockey — May 11 – 20, 2020

This is a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage to Germany and Austria visiting religious and cultural sites in Munich, Freising, the Obersalzberg Mountains, Berchtesga-den, Salzburg, Regensburg, Nuremberg, and Rothenberg concluding with the 42nd performance of the world-famous Passion Play in Oberammergau. This unique production only takes place every decade. The history of the Pas-sion Play dates back to 1633. In the middle of the Thirty Years War, after months of suffering and death from the plague, the Oberammergau villagers swore an oath that they would perform the "Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ" every ten years. The villagers have fulfilled their promise to God every ten years since this pledge. What a tremendous and unique way for us to unite our own spiritual journey with this extraordinary tradition of faith. We hope you will prayerfully consider joining your brothers and sisters in Christ on this pilgrimage. Flyers are available in the parish office.

Thinking about joining us? Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a Catholic lay organization that leads women and men to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to the needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam (1813-1853) and patron, St. Vincent de Paul (1581-1660). Members, known as Vin-centians, are drawn from every ethnic and cultural background, age group and economic level. Our SEAS Conference serves parishioners and all within our church boundaries. Contact our office at 281-463-4560 or send an email to [email protected] for more info. Have a blessed week!

S t . F ranci s of Ass i s i October 4 Born in Italy around1181, St. Francis of Assisi was renowned for drinking and partying in his youth. After fighting in a battle between Assisi and Perugia, Francis was captured and imprisoned for ransom. He spent nearly a year in prison—awaiting his father's payment—and, according to legend, began receiving visions from God. After his release from prison, Francis heard the voice of Christ, who told him to repair the Christian Church and live a life of poverty. Consequently, he abandoned his life of luxury and became a devotee of the faith, his reputation spreading all over the Christian world. Later in life, Francis received a vision that left him with the stigmata of Christ—marks re-sembling the wounds Jesus Christ suffered when he was crucified—making Francis the first person to receive such holy wounds. He was canonized as a saint on July 16, 1228. In 2013, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergogli chose to honor St. Francis by taking his name, be-coming Pope Francis.
