Exchange of Vows on October 8, 2020

Dear Folks, I want to express my great gratitude to Mrs. Kim Livaudais and her assistant Janice Rees with their lead in the parish CCD pro-gram as it starts today. This past Saturday I sat in with the teachers in their opening conference, led by Mrs. Livaudais, coordinat-ing the schedules for coming school year. It is truly a brave new world for folks like myself as we connect our laptop computers into the classroom of students present and those beyond the cameras. Yes, the adven-ture begins today. I am reminded of one of the great priests of the Order of Missionhurst Priests who came to Virginia after being released from the Chinese/Japanese prisons following World War II. His name was Fr. Maurice du Castillion. As a young priest from Belgium he was sent to China to serve as a missionary. After only a few weeks in country he received a call to take charge of a community seven days distant, but he had to be there in four days. A description of the assignment was offered, with following admonishment: “Dear Maurice, I know you’re not capable. I know you’re not qualified. But, I have no one else to send… so please don’t come and see me.” Our teachers are capable and qualified and what’s more… they serve in the pandemic. Their Faith commitment in this very important apostolate is nothing than heroic. God bless them, the students, and families whose hearts and minds they touch. Let us pray for one another. I leave you with a sermon from St. Augustin that was directed to pastors in his time, fifth century… as the empire was crumbling. In this world the same letter applies to all in the field of Catholic Education with in the Catholic schools, CCD programs, and formal programs for homeschoolers, as a collective or home educated. All done when the current Christian culture is crumbling. “The straying sheep you have not recalled; the lost sheep you have not sought. In one way or another, we go on living between the hands of robbers and the teeth of raging wolves, and in light of these present dangers we ask you prayers. The sheep moreover are insolent. The shepherd seeks out the straying sheep, but because they have wandered away and are lost they say that they are not ours. “Why do you want us? Why do you seek us?” they ask, as if their straying and being lost were not the very reason for our wanting them and seek-ing them out. “If I am straying,” he says, “if I am lost, why do you want me?” You are straying, that is why I wish to recall you. You have been lost, I wish to find you. “But I wish to stray,” he says, “I wish to be lost.” So you wish to stray and be lost? How much better that I do not also wish this. Certainly, I dare say, I am unwelcome. But I listen to the Apostle who says: Preach the word; insist upon it, welcome and unwelcome. Welcome to whom? Unwelcome to whom? By all means welcome to those who desire it; unwelcome to those who do not. However unwelcome, I dare to say; “You wish to stray, you wish to be lost; but I do not want this.” For the one whom I fear does not wish this. And should I wish it, consider his words of reproach: The straying sheep you have not recalled; the lost sheep you have not sought. Shall I fear you rather than Him? Remember, we must all present ourselves before the judgment seat of Christ. I shall recall the straying; I shall seek the lost. Whether they wish it or not, I shall do it. And should the brambles of the forests tear at me when I seek them, I shall force myself through all straits; I shall pull down all hedges. So far as the God whom I fear grants me the strength, I shall search everywhere. I shall recall the straying; I shall seek after those on the verge of being lost. If you do not want me to suffer, do not stray, do not become lost. It is not enough that I lament your straying and loss. No, I fear that in neglecting you, I shall also kill what is strong. Consider the passage that follows: And what was strong you have destroyed. Should I neglect the straying and lost, the strong one will also take delight in straying and in being lost. (Sermon 46. St. Augustine. 354-430)

Great compliments go to Emily Glass, parish youth director, and her fellow adults for the wonderful meet-ing they had with the twenty five or thirty kids that showed up after Mass. It was awesome. God bless one and all in this very important apostolate.

****Please don’t forget. Next week is the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. We will be blessing the animals, at the bottom for the front church steps at 3pm. Come one come all.

Collegiate answer: In Rome you can find the relics of the True Cross at: The Church of Santa Croce, formerly the palace of St. Helena, mother of the Roman emperor, Constantine. The second place is atop the obelisk in St. Peter’s Square… a totally cool story… archaeology-travel.com/street/vatican-obelisk-in-st-peters-square/Collegiate Question: For our literary critics. How many sonnets did Shakespeare compose and which one speaks of lilies and weeds? One of my favorites, good hunting.

ASSISTANTS ARE STILL NEEDED!! so please prayerfully consider helping this year. Catechists and assistants receive free tuition. Religious Education Calendar

Dear Parents,

We are excited to open the doors once again this weekend to our students in all religious education classes, beginning this Sunday at 10:30 am; Monday and Wednesday classes are scheduled to begin at 4:45 pm. We have 105 registered families with 225children who will attend classes in the Education Center, and 88 families with 170 children who have chosen our homeschooling option this year.

Father Gould and Father Heisler are excited to work with the high school students in the parish; 38 students are registered for the Sunday and Monday classes thus far. Parents…there’s room for all, so please register your high schoolers if you haven’t done so.

We are blessed with a dedicated group of volunteer catechists who met last Saturday for Mass, recitation of their Oath of Fidel-ity, and an orientation in the Education Center with Father Gould. We are all very eager to meet your children, and help you with the important work of their formation in the Faith.

All families who have chosen in-class instruction: Please make sure that you have turned in the required participation waiver that is available on the St. Francis website. By signing this waiver, parents agree to perform a nine-question health screening before each class session.

Our re-opening guidelines for parents are available on the website, and outline our change in drop-off and pick-up procedures this year. I will go over this along with other policies and procedures for the year at a very brief parent meeting on the first day of class. Please check your email for details about this meeting.

I look forward to sharing more about the wonderful work our catechists are doing with the children throughout the year…so stay tuned!

with prayers for all as we begin again,

Kim LivaudaisDirector of Religious Education

PLEASE NOTE! It is not too late your register your children! The Wednesday session will be streamlined this year and only be open to our 8th grade Confirmation students. The kindergarten through 7th grade classes have been cancelled; we will re-evaluate the situation in January when the pandemic has hopefully lifted. There are still available slots in most Sunday and Monday classes.

TMIY Year 6: All Things NewWeek 03 - God’s Covenant Made NewTMIY is back and so is Dr. Scott Hahn. This week we will seek to understand the connection between Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Eucharistic meal we share … which is to understand the Eucharist as a Sacrificial Feast. Dr. Hahn will also help us grasp the intimate connection between the Holy Mass and the Holy Scriptures … the Liturgy of the Eucharist and the Liturgy of the Word. Before you leave, you will have a whole new comprehension of the New Testament. As a Catholic, this is an eye-opening session you don’t want to miss. All TMIY sessions are stand-alone so you can join at any time.See you there and bring a friend!Wednesday 7pm (in person)Saturday 7am (in person); 8am (ZOOM)All in person meetings will take place in the Parish Education Center.Due to COVID-19 rules and regulations we ask everyone to register, in advance, at [email protected].

Morning Bible Study GroupWe will be studying The Mystery of the Eucharist. Both men and women are encouraged to sign up for this group. This is a really powerful study that will change the way you view and receive the Eucharist. Consider this, the last time many of us learned anything about the Real Presence, we were just seven years old. The Body of Christ has so much to offer us. We should be very aware of this amazing gift we receive each week. This study provides the opportunity for us to grow in our faith as well as meet other parishioners that want the same. The study begins on Wednesday, October 7 and will meet for 8 weeks on Wednesday mornings from 10 -11:30am. If you are interested, please contact Jeanne Lamana at jeannelamana@ gmail.com

Women's Study GroupWe will be studying and reading Saint Teresa of Avila's The Interior Castle. St.Teresa grieved that most people give all their attention to the outer walls of the castle - their body - ignoring and neglecting the beauty of the soul within. Saint Theresa gives practical advice regarding our inner struggles and urges us forward through prayer to each of the seven rooms of the castle and deeper into the heart of the center room to the seat of the King, our Divine Majesty. Saint Theresa believed that progress toward God through prayer is worth vastly more than all the treasures on earth. If you are looking to meet women who like you are seeking the heart and will of God, I urge you to con-sider joining the Women's Study Group. This study begins on Tuesday September 29th and will meet for 9 weeks on Tuesday evenings from 7 - 8:30pm.If you are interested, please contact Jeanne Lamana at [email protected]

Many heartfelt memories of our wonderful volunteer Vito, may he rest in peace. We cannot say it often enough, our thanks and gratitude to all volunteers who cook, buy and deliver the requests each time for our brothers and sisters in need. The photo cannot even show all of the items donated by you, counted, sorted and delivered by others to Anacostia Sisters of Charity last Friday, September 11. We also know that sometimes things happen on the way to the kitchen! (see watermelon photo), but we always have enough. We do love the hearts and mes-sages you write on the donations! While hosting Our Lady of Fatima in our home this week, we took her to spend time with the Sisters in Anacostia. Not only did she have a road trip, but also a sleepover with them. To say they were overjoyed with her visit would be an under-statement.

Leesburg Life Chain Join fellow pro-lifers on October 4 for the Leesburg Life Chain at 2 PM on King Street in Leesburg adjacent to St John the Apostle. Signs are provided though bringing your own is great too. This is a wonderful opportunity to transition from the pew to the sidewalk advocating for the unborn. No ath-letic achievements required; we spread out, trying to cover as many blocks as possible to create a sense of volume, and testify quietly and prayerfully. 1600 Life Chains are held con-currently across the nation; a long chain is more likely to cre-ate serious conversation for passing motorists as little Melissa in the back seat queries Daddy-driver on what those signs are about. Block upon block coverage requires folks who care, so please attend. We will wrap up at 3:20 with a group picture. Grandma can bring a chair and hold the little one.

RCIA- Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults A walk through the RCIA ProcessHow does our parish attract inquirers who consider becoming Catholic? The short answer is you! When any parish has many inquirers year after year, it is the fruit of the Holy Spirit as parish members open their hearts to welcome others. Mem-bers of a welcoming and evangelizing community take se-riously their call to share the Divine message of salvation. It happens in parish families, in the workplace, in gather-ings with friends and neighbors, and in daily contacts. Give thanks to God as he continuously strengthens each of us who seek to do his will in offering a gentle, humble, and clear welcome to the Catholic faith. “Go out into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15).If you would like to learn more about the Catholic faith, contact Travis Moger at [email protected] are held on Tuesday evenings at 7pm. The first class will be September 22. Classes will be via ZOOM format initially.

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALSPlease remind your little creatures of God that we will have the bless-ing of animals on Sunday October 4th, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. We will meet in front of the Church, at the bottom of the stairs, at 3pm. All are welcome. Please in-vite the neighbors too. Bring beasts of all kinds, great and small alike, for the annual blessing.

If you are grieving a spouse, family member, or friend, whether recently or some time ago, or you know someone who is grieving, please call us for more information, Laura at 703-727-7117.
