    Christmas Masses Clearly, I am worried that a endance at Christmas Masses tend to be higher and that many who are concerned about their health and well-being might be safer to watch Mass on TV. We have added two Masses to assist us in keeping state guidelines on the number allowed in various gathering and social distancing. But again, be safe. Do you see what I see? The Christmas Star

    2020 has been a year like no other in our life mes. Since early spring College Hype in Adams Village has been selling Resilience 2020 Items to support both Boston Medical Center and South Shore Hospital. I just purchased an ornament for my Christmas Tree. Resilience is perhaps the most appropriate word to describe 2020. My word for 2021 is hope and a sign of hope will light up our skies this week. As the year comes to a close, a once-in-a-life me sight will appear in the night sky just in me for the holidays. A star, a star will dance in the night on December 21st. Actually, it won’t be a star, but the so-called “great conjunc on” of two planets — Jupiter and Saturn — crea ng something similar to what some astronomers suggest the Magi may have seen in the biblical of the birth of Jesus. According to the Gospel of Ma hew, Magi, or wise men, came to Jerusalem a er Jesus’ birth, asking, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” The last me such a close pairing was observable to the naked eye was in 1226. For me, the Christmas Star of 2020 is a reminder that Christ is with us and that there is a light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. With Christ by our side may we decide that 2021, no ma er what happens, will be a year of light over darkness, hope over despair, peace over anger, community over division. To you and those you love a safe and blessed Christmas!

    Pope declares Year of St. Joseph

    On December 8th Pope Francis issued a decree launching a special year dedicated to St. Joseph. In an apostolic le er issued Pope Francis said the figure of St. Joseph has been on his mind in a par cular way during the coronavirus pandemic, a crisis he said showed how “our lives are woven together and sustained by ordinary people, people o en overlooked. People who do not appear in newspaper and magazine headlines, or on the latest television show, yet in these very days are surely shaping the decisive events of our history.”

    He said, “How many people daily exercise pa ence and offer hope, taking care to spread not panic, but shared responsibility. How many fathers, mothers, grandparents and teachers are showing our children, in small everyday ways, how to accept and deal with a crisis by adjus ng their rou nes, looking ahead and encouraging the prac ce of prayer,” he said.

    With the backdrop of the pandemic, Francis said the faithful can rediscover St. Joseph, “the man who goes unno ced, a daily, discreet and hidden presence,” as an intercessor and source of support and guidance. Saint Joseph, he said, “reminds us that those who appear hidden or in the shadows can play an incomparable role in the history of salva on. A word of recogni on and of gra tude is due to them all.”

    When Pope Francis announced the Year of St. Joseph today, he also gave us a new prayer.

    Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted his only Son;

    in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became man.

    Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father

    and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy and courage,

    and defend us from every evil. Amen.
