Wildcats Storylines ...HALFWAY THROUGH: At the halfway point of the 2016 season, the Wild-cats have plenty of reasons to be pleased. Saint Ignatius owns a 4-1 record for the first time since 2012, when the Wildcats started off the season 5-0. Coach Kyle’s ‘Cats have started off 4-1 or better six times in the previous 10 seasons. The last two times the Wildcats won state championships (2008 and 2011), the team entered the second half of the season with a 4-1 mark.

SHUTOUT CITY: The strength of the Wildcats this season is arguably the defense. The unit has allowed just 35 points through five games, an average of 7 points per game. More impressively, the Wildcats have shut out three of their five opponents this season, including Walsh Jesuit last week. The last Wildcats squad to keep three of their first five opponents off the scoreboard was the 1988 team. The 2016 defense still has a ways to go to break the school record of six shutouts in a regular season, set by Ralph Vince’s 1925 team, which won claimed the city championship with an 8-1 mark.

COMMITTEE OF CATS: Saint Ignatius has frequently turned to the ground game this season, and for good reason. The Wildcats’ backfield is one of the best in Northeast Ohio, with the one-two punch of Mark Bobinski ‘18 and Jimmy Andrews ‘18 leading the way. The duo has split the carries evenly this season, forming a dynamic committee. Andrews leads all Wildcats rushers with 395 yards on 55 carries, while Bobinski has a team-best 9 touchdowns, along with 61 attempts for 380 yards. Quarterback Patrick Ryan ‘17 is also a running threat, with 38 rushes for 178 yards and two touchdowns. Dean Stowers ‘17 provides a nice third option, dashing for 168 yards on 12 rushes, a whopping 14.0 yards per carry.

LINEBACKER LEGION: The “Linebacker Legion” of Adam Shibley, John Velotta, and James Leyden have been one of the best units on the team this season. The trio has combined for 41.5 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks. The trio recorded 5.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks alone last week.

YOU SHALL NOT PASS: The Wildcats’ offensive line has done wonderful work this season, paving the way for the ground game and giving quarterback Pat Ryan time in the pocket. The offensive line, which includes three senior starters, has allowed just four sacks in five games. And thanks in part to the line, the Wildcats are averaging 270.4 rushing yards per game.

IGNATIUS MEN FOREVER: Alumni Brian Hoyer ‘04 and Jake Ryan ‘10 are doing well in the NFL. Hoyer threw for 317 yards and 2 touchdowns last week for the Bears, and Ryan recorded nine tackles in a Packers win.

UPDATE ON THE WILD KITTENS: The freshman team defeated Erie McDowell, 27-7 on Thursday at Wasmer Field. The JV squad played Parma this morning at 9 a.m.

UP NEXT: The Wildcats hit the road next Friday at 7 p.m. for a contest against the Canton GlenOak Eagles.

Learning about the Redmen ... RED-HOT: Following a loss to the Olmsted Falls Bulldogs to start off the season, the Parma Redmen have won four straight in impressive fashion. Three of Parma’s four wins have been decided by a margin of 15 points or greater, the outlier being a narrow win over Elyria Catholic last week. Parma has already exceeded its win mark from last season, as the Redmen finished the 2015 season with a 3-7 mark. The Redmen fell to the Wildcats in week six last year, 55-0.

PLAYOFF CONTENDERS: Thanks to a 4-1 start, Parma is in the thick of the playoff hunt. The Redmen currently hold the No. 8 seed in the OHSAA Divi-sion I, Region 2 computer rankings.

GUTSY COMEBACK: Trailing Elyria Catholic, 13-6, with just over six minutes remaining, Parma found itself in a tough position last week. But the Redmen did not give up the fight. Parma stormed back and scored a touchdown to bring the game within one, 13-12, as Lyons found Mark Post on a 38-yard touchdown pass. Instead of opting for an extra point, head coach Bruce Saban and the Redmen decided to be daring, trying for two. The gamble paid off, lead-ing to a 14-13 win over Elyria Catholic. Look for Parma to be daring against the Wildcats this week, too.

AERIAL ATTACK: Parma’s offense has a veteran quarterback at the helm with lots of experience. Senior Kyle Lyon headlines the Parma attack, leading the way with a solid arm and quick feet. The 6’2” signalcaller scurried for 29 yards to lead the way in a 28-7 win over Normandy earlier in the season. He also con-nected on a 61-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter last week against Elyria Catholic. Lyon completed 4-of-10 passes for 50 yards against the Wildcats last season.

GETTING IT DONE ON THE GROUND: Besides having a solid passing game, the Redmen have done well in the running game this season. Parma has used its success rushing in the red zone to overcome opponents this season. Junior running back Mark Post has led the charge, scoring the game-winning touchdown against Normandy on a 29-yard run to daylight. Post also showed off his arm against Normandy, tossing a 9-yard touchdown pass to put the Invaders away in the third quarter. Parma’s Bryson Durham is another player to watch out for, as he scored a 14-yard touchdown against North Royalton. Durham led the Redmen on the ground with 10 attempts for 38 yards against the Wildcats in last season’s matchup.

UP NEXT: The Redmen will stay close to home at Byers Field at Robert M. Boulton Stadium for a 7 p.m. showdown with crosstown rival Valley Forge on Friday, October 7. The Redmen won last year’s contest, 34-7.

C JOHN SPELLACY ‘17

The job of the center can often be thankless, but that doesn’t stop John Spellacy from doing it well. The 6’1”, 285 pound lineman has opened big holes for Wildcats’ backs and pro-tected QB Pat Ryan ‘17 quite well. Last week, the senior and the line helped the backs gain 7.2 yards per rush, and did not allow a sack. Spellacy and company will try to keep it up against Parma.

CB CAMERON TOPPIN ‘18

Much credit has been given to the Wildcats’ front seven, and deservedly so. But Cam-eron Toppin and the second-ary have played well, too. The 5’11”, 160 pound corner tallied a team-best 5 tackles last week against Walsh Jesuit. On the year, the junior also has a tackle for loss, intercep-tion, fumble recovery, and two pass breakups. Toppin will be called upon to help stop Parma’s passing attack.

Wildcats win second straight in com-plete effort against Parma

By Eddie Dwyer Parma, Ohio - With their gifted senior quarterback Dennis Grosel reading the Parma defense like his favorite book, the Wildcats improved to 4-2 after dominating what was the renewal of a series that began in 1959 and ended in 1979. After Friday’s one-sided affair, which came on Saint Ignatius’ annual Senior Parents Night, the Wildcats now lead their all-time series with the Redmen, 12-8-1. Saint Ignatius and Parma did not meet on the gridiron in 1976. Grosel, who is having an All-Ohio caliber season with his arm and legs, played just the first half and totaled 123 yards rushing and four touchdown runs on six carries and 176 yards passing. He was 13-of-19 through the air, including a 34-yard touchdown pass to standout senior wide receiver Cal Grbac. Cal made the catch along the visitor’s sideline of Byers Field, spun away from the cornerback and raced into the scoreboard end zone. Affter hard-nosed junior tailback Jimmy Andrews scored the game’s first points off a 3-yard touchdown run that saw Jimmy make a nice cut-back move, Grosel followed with scorings runs of 54, 12 and 7 yards. Following his 34-yard TD toss to Grbac, Grosel scored his fourth rushing touchdown off a smooth 13-yard gallop. Junior kicker/punter Colin Good-fellow, who had an exceptional night powering the pigskin up and through the brisk, strong and tricky winds that swirled around Robert M. Boulton Stadium, produced five of his seven extra points in a first half that saw Saint Ignatius take a 41-0 lead into its locker room at halftime. Colin was also booming kickoffs into the end zone. While all four of Grosel’s touchdown runs were an exceptional display of field vision, cutting ability and deceiving power and speed, one in particular drew a warm smile from this old-timer on a night that was more like mid-to-late November than the second day of October. With the Wildcats leading, 7-0, Dennis surveyed the field, didn’t like what he saw, rolled left, made a highlight-reel cut back across the field that saw him dart to the right sideline and, after freezing a defender with a move that Russell Wilson would have appreciated, completed his 54-yard TD jaunt. As Saint Ignatius’ Hall of Fame Head Coach Chuck Kyle was clearing his bench in order to make sure that all 100-plus of his Wildcats saw playing time, Saint Ignatius added two more rushing touchdowns in a running-clock second half. They resulted from a 9-yard effort by senior tailback Elijah Wahib off a quick burst over the left side and into the Day Drive end zone standing up, and a strong second-effort 1-yard dive into the scoreboard end zone by senior running back David Welcsh. After Parma (2-4) turned in some successful plays in the early going, the Cats’ defense, behind the powerful and relentless penetration by junior nose tackle Joe Gibbons and senior lineman Nathan Keirn, and a leaping interception by senior safety Ryan Berger, put an end to the adrenaline the Redmen were riding in the first quarter. Keirn had 2 and a half sacks in the first half. Saint Ignatius totaled 410 yards (200 rushing and 210 passing) and Parma had 126 yards of offense (76 rushing and 50 passing). The Cats’ leaders in the receiving department were Grbac with four recep-tions for 67 yards, senior Jim Berger with three catches for 42 yards and senior Tyler Musbach with two grabs for 26 yards.

By Eddie DwyerThe Wildcats hold a 12-8-1 lead in what is a history-rich gridiron series that began in 1959, ended in

1979 and was renewed in 2015. Saint Ignatius and Parma Senior did not play in 1976.Saint Ignatius and Parma Senior will keep that renewal alive when they meet in a significant matchup

on Saturday night at Byers Field in Parma’s Robert M. Boulton Stadium. The kickoff from Ridge Road and Day Drive is 7 PM.

If you can’t make it out to the game, Saint Ignatius’ Buck and Gruden, aka senior Brendan DeVenney and junior Matt MacKenzie, will bring you the game live over the Saint Ignatius Broadcast Network. The corner expresses its congratulations to Matt, who is as avid an Indians fan as you will find.

Cleveland, Ohio, on a pleasant fall afternoon in Ohio City - Saint Ignatius’ Hall of Fame Coach Chuck Kyle ‘69, now in his 34th season as his alma mater’s Head Football Coach, never coached against Parma until last season.

However, Coach Kyle recalls vividly that opening night in the fall of 1968 when his head coach, Saint Ignatius legend the late John J. Wirtz, pointed a finger in his direction while the Wildcats were on defense.

Better known for his prowess as an All-City running back for the Wildcats, Kyle was called on to go in and play one of the linebacker positions. Although Kyle had contributed in the defensive backfield, linebacker was a whole new position for him.

With Saint Ignatius clinging to a 2-0 lead over Parma in the late stages of the game, the kid nicknamed “Chico,” on the advice of fellow linebacker Mike Noetzel, was told to keep an eye on the Redmen running back and if he flares or goes out to the flat, “you have to pick him up.”

So what happened? The back flared out to the flat and Kyle intercepted the ball and returned it for a 22-yard touchdown

in front of a packed house at Byers Field. That effort, along with Larry Berridge’s extra-point kick, pushed Saint Ignatius’ lead to nine points and the Wildcats hung on for a 9-8 victory.

Yes, the Parma defense threw a shutout, but the Redmen still went down in a loss that was hard to swallow.

Coach Kyle moved to Parma and Holy Family Parish when he was in the sixth grade. As a young man, he would go and watch the outstanding Parma and Valley Forge teams from the early 1960s.

Among those Parma greats was Arnold “Arnie” Chonko, the great uncle of Saint Ignatius defensive back Jeff Chonko ‘17 Jeff, because of an injury, is helping out with the development of the ‘Cats’ Freshmen Football Team this fall. He is also a catcher in Coach Brad Ganor’s highly successful baseball program.

Arnie Chonko, from the Parma Senior Class of 1961, was a standout in baseball, basketball and football for the Redmen. He was a two-time All-Lake Erie League and two-time All-District selection in baseball and a three-time All-LEL honoree in football.

Arnie was the LEL MVP and the Cleveland Touchdown Club Player of the Year in football in 1960. He earned All-State honors in both football and baseball. Arnie received three letters in baseball and three letters in football while attending The Ohio State University. In baseball, he was a two-time All-Big Ten selection and an NCAA All-American.

In football for the Buckeyes, Arnie was a three-year starting defensive back, earning both All-Big Ten and NCAA All-American honors in 1964. He played in the 1965 East-West Shrine Game. Arnie won nu-merous Scholar-Athlete awards during his career, including two-time All-Academic Big Ten and two-time Academic All-American honors. Arnie was named to the Ohio State All-Century team in both football and baseball and was elected to the OSU Athletic Hall of Fame. He was selected in both the professional baseball and football drafts, but decided to enter the OSU Medical School and went on to become an accomplished medical doctor.

In what were the first two meetings on the gridiron between the Wildcats and the Redmen, Arnie Chonko led Parma to victories in 1959 (14-6) and 1960 (34-0). Arnie is a charter member of the Parma Senior High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

“I was in the crowd watching Arnie Chonko play, that’s amazing,” said Coach Kyle, who also recalled his junior season of 1967, when Parma upset a talent-laden Saint Ignatius team, 16-14.

The ‘67 Cats would go on to finish 9-1 and bring home the annual Charity Game City Championship trophy by defeating Collinwood, 21-0, on Thanksgiving Morning in the Grand Lady on the Lake, old Municipal Stadium.

Ah, the late 1950s and the 1960s, a great era in area high school football.Last year marked the renewal of a football series that used to traditionally merit Saturday morning

front-page headlines in The Plain Dealer Sports Section.Although the 2015 renewal was one Parma would just as soon forget, a 55-0 Saint Ignatius victory that

saw All-Ohio quarterback Dennis Grosel ‘16 total 123 yards and four touchdowns rushing on six carries, and complete 13 of 19 passes for 176 yards and a 34-yard touchdown while playing just the first half, the Wildcats and the Redmen are gearing up for a game on Saturday night that will award the winner some significant points in next week’s OHSAA Computer Playoff Ratings.

Under the OHSAA Harbin playoff system, teams are awarded points for each game they win and each game a defeated opponent wins. The top eight teams in each region at the end of the regular season advance to the annual OHSAA state playoffs. Parma is currently eighth in Division I, Region 2 with an average points of 7.2 and Saint Ignatius is ninth in Division I, Region 1 with 6.75 points.

As some old-timer and a not so old-timer told many of the ‘Cats in preseason mini camps and two-a-days, “I could see Parma possibly winning at least 4 or 5 games this season.” That young-timer was the pride of Parma, former Wildcat football and baseball great, Josiah “Juice” Kedzior ‘04, who is Saint Ignatius’ receivers coach. Josiah used to be Brian Hoyer’s go-to guy. Brian is currently the starting quarter-

Parma, which finished 3-7 last season, has already won as many games as it did in 2014 and 2013. Young Wildcats fans always seemed surprised when informed that Parma qualified for the OHSAA Division I playoffs as recently as 2009.

As for the 2016 version of Parma Senior football, the Redmen enter Saturday night’s kickoff at 4-1, the same record the Wildcats bring to Byers Field.

After a loss at Olmsted Falls on opening night, Parma has run off victories at North Royalton, versus Normandy and John Marshall at Byers Field and a 14-13 victory over Elyria Catholic last weekend, also on Byers Field. The Redmen stand 2-0 in the Great Lakes Conference, which was formed last season.

Parma trailed Elyria Catholic, 13-6, with just over six minutes remaining to be played, but rallied to the one-point victory by successfully executing a two-point conversion after cutting the deficit to 13-12 in the final seconds.

The Redmen also displayed their resilience in Week 2 at North Royalton.Trailing the Bears, 21-6, Parma ran off 30 unanswered points and proudly walked off the

Serpentini Stadium field with a 36-21 triumph. A 90-yard interception return for a touchdown by Andrew Shields fueled the resounding comeback and a 14-yard touchdown run by Bryson Durham put the Redmen in command.

Among some of Parma’s other offensive weapons are 6-foot-2 quarterback Kyle Lyon and run-ning backs Mark Post and Vinny Livdur.

Saint Ignatius enters Saturday night’s game having out-rushed its first five opponents by a combined 1,352 yards to 275 yards. The ‘Cats have 20 rushing touchdowns and have yielded just 2 TDs on the ground.

Senior quarterback Patrick Ryan has thrown for 491 yards, senior tailback Jimmy Andrews has rushed for 395 yards and is averaging over 7 yards per carry, and junior tailback Mark Bobinski has rushed for 380 yards, averaging 6.2 yards a crack and scoring nine touchdowns.

Senior wide receiver Travis Pot has 11 receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown, and senior tight end James Leyden, who is also a mainstay on defense as a linebacker, has hauled in 8 passes for 93 yards and a TD.

Saint Ignatius is averaging 38.8 points a game and yielding just 7 points a game. Leading the ‘Cats’ defensive charge are senior lineman Mike Chime and senior linebacker/captain Adam Shibley.

Chime has rang the bell for 20 tackles, including 1 1/2 sacks for -minus 12 yards and 8 other tackles for a loss totaling -minus 31 yards. Mike has also returned a punt for a touchdown.

“Shibs,” as his teammates refer to the gifted and gritty Shibley, has 19.5 tackles. That includes 2 sacks for -minus 15 yards and 6.5 other tackles that have resulted in a total of -minus 29 yards.

What you have to consider is that the above-mentioned numbers were accumulated with the first team sitting out most of two of the Wildcats’ five games (Normandy and Valley Forge).

GETTING THEIR KICKS: In what is one of the top punting/kicking duos in the state, senior Colin Goodfellow has punted just four times for a 41.5-yard average and Colin has consistently booted his kickoffs deep into the end zone, making the opponent attempt to drive 80 yards.

Junior Matthew Trickett, also a standout on Coach Mike McLaughlin’s Soccer Team, which is ranked No. 1 in both the state and national polls, is 4-for-5 on his field goals with a long of 41 yards.

FROM COACH KYLE ON SATURDAY NIGHT’S MATCHUP“They’re doing some very nice things,” Coach Kyle said of the Redmen. “Their skilled kids are

pretty veteran, they work really well together.“We’ve had to preach all week to stay in coverage, because they keep the play alive,” Coach Kyle

continued. “Their quarterback keeps running around and their receivers do a good job in sort of a scramble thing of getting in position for him to see them. But then again, they’ll go with the quick passing game. If you give them a little hitch or a little slant, they’ll take it.

“So that demands a lot of the coverage. You can’t just lay back, you have to play with intensity on the coverage. It would be nice if we could disrupt their rhythm a little bit with the pass rush.

“Defensively, they’ve done some nice things. They’re not real big, but they’re fast off the ball and aggressive, and their secondary is experienced. There’s a good reason why they are 4-1.

“We’re happy with the way we’re playing right now. We’re running the ball very well and that makes the other team have to adjust a little bit. Our key thing is, whatever their adjustment is, let’s take advantage of it.

“This will be a nice game, a good game and it does have computer-point capability. I’m not one to go home and add things up. Joe Eitel is better at it than I am. Here you are playing a 4-1 team in Parma that is Division I. So I think our kids realize, let’s go, this is like a playoff game.

“It’s playoff caliber teams the rest of the season, right on through,” Coach Kyle said in reference to next weeks’ trip to GlenOak, versus Archbishop Moeller in Week 8 at Otterbein University, the battle for the Cannon Bell at St. Xavier in Week 9, and the highly anticipated regular-season finale versus longtime West Side rival and two-time defending Division I state champion St. Edward on Oct. 29 at 6 PM in the Browns’ FirstEnergy Stadium.

A slate of games that champions are made of, my friends.

Eddie Dwyer’s Corner: Walsh Jesuit RecapBy Eddie DwyerCuyahoga Falls, Ohio - Unlike last season on Parma’s Byers Field,

there was no need for any last minute heroics in Walsh Jesuit’s Con-way Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

The Varsity Football Wildcats, who turned Walsh Jesuit away by three points in the final 53 seconds in 2015, came out and estab-lished their superiority from the get-go last night and walked away with a decisive 30-0 victory over the Warriors in a packed Conway Memorial Stadium.

Saint Ignatius, behind arguably the top offensive line in the seven-county area and a defensive front that can play with anyone in Ohio, rode a powerful running game keyed by senior tailback Jimmy Andrews, an authoritative defense and the powerful legs of junior Matthew Trickett and senior Colin Goodfellow to its fourth victory in five games.

Walsh Jesuit, a young team that has had its share of injuries early on, now stands at 1-4.

“Yeah, it’s a pretty consistent pattern this year, the effect of our offensive line and defensive front,” said Wildcats Hall of Fame Head Coach Chuck Kyle, who will lead his Wildcats against the now 4-1 Parma Senior Redmen on Saturday, October 1 at 7 PM on Byers Field in Parma’s Robert M. Boulton Stadium. Can anyone say Dan Jawarski or Gilbert Hopeful?

The pattern Coach Kyle referred to was established early and often, as Saint Ignatius, with Andrews picking up 57 yards on his first three carries, muscled its way to a 35-yard field goal off the foot of the gifted Trickett on the first offensive series of the game.

Andrews, displaying power, balance and speed, finished the night with 164 yards rushing on 22 carries.

After the ‘Cats’ defense forced the Warriors to punt from their goal line, Andrews and his offensive line, which is anchored by All-Ohio senior center and East Carolina recruit John Spellacy and 6-foot-6, 317-pound junior left tackle Darian Kinnard, went to work again.

Taking possession at the Walsh Jesuit 45-yard line after the punt from the goal line sailed out of bounds, Saint Ignatius, with Andrews, off a picture-perfect cut to the left while still maintaining his balance and power, ran to a first down at the Warriors’ 16-yard line.

Two plays later, hard-nosed junior tailback Mark Bobinski scored on an 8-yard run over the right side and Trickett’s extra-point kick made it a 10-0 game with 5:05 remaining in the opening quarter.

With senior quarterback Patrick Ryan helping engineer a 13-play, 93-yard drive, the Wildcats, behind the receiving of senior Travis Pot and the running of Bobinski, pushed their lead to 17-0 off a smooth 6-yard keeper for a touchdown by Ryan and the ensuing extra point by Trickett with 8:22 to go in the first half.

Ranked ninth in this week’s Associated Press Division I State Poll, Saint Ignatius led 20-0 at halftime after Trickett, who is also a stand-out for Coach Mike McLaughlin’s state and nationally acclaimed soc-

cer program, booted a high and true 40-yard field goal into the wind with plenty to spare.

Trickett totaled 12 points on the night and Goofellow, the Wildcats’ Student Athlete of the Week for his outstanding kicking and punting in last weekend’s tough over-time loss at Detroit Catholic Central, sent kickoff after kickoff deep into the end zones of Conway Memorial Stadium. Talk about a pair of special teams weapons.

Saint Ignatius, moving the football behind the running of Ryan and Andrews, led 23-0 after Trickett sent a 25-yard field goal into the Friday night lights of Wyoga Lake Road late in the third quarter, and closed out the scoring on a 1-yard keeper by junior quarterback Daniel Alexander and Trickett’s 12th point.

Coach Kyle’s team was knocking on the door again in the final minute, but knelt down twice at the Warriors’ 14-yard line to end the game.

Saint Ignatius ran the ball 50 times for 338 yards and Walsh Je-suit managed 38 yards on 27 carries. The ‘Cats passed for 83 yards and the Warriors totaled 74 yards through the air. Along with Andrews’ big night on the ground, Saint Ignatius got 10 carries for 67 yards from Bobinski and two carries for 71 yards from senior tailback Dean “The Dream” Stowers.

The first downs were 27-7 in favor Saint Ignatius and the total plays and yards showed the Wildcats with 64 for 471 and Walsh Jesuit with 38 for 112.

Defense, take a bow.“They would pick up a first down and then we would hit them

for a loss or no gain, and that would slow things down,” said Coach Kyle. “Offensively, it’s not a shock that we’re running the ball pretty well. The offensive line did a great job, like they’ve been doing all season.”

Eddie Dwyer’s Corner: A History of Wildcats FootballBy Eddie DwyerCleveland, Ohio - On September 11, 2015, the Saint Ignatius Wildcats added

another milestone to their illustrious football legacy by playing their 1,000th game.Coach Chuck Kyle’s Wildcats, scoring all of their points in the first half, defeated

the Valley Forge Patriots, 41-0, on Byers Field in Parma’s Robert. M. Boulton Stadium.

Although the early years of Saint Ignatius football were not laden with the success Wildcats faithful have grown accustom to, the man who put the football program on the local map was Mr. Ralph Vince, a graduate of Martins Ferry High School and Washington & Jefferson University who studied law at Western Reserve University.

The astute and eloquent Coach Vince guided his Golden Tornado, as Saint Igna-tius was known then, to a City Championship in 1925, a 15-game winning streak and an overall record of 29-6 from 1923 through 1926. Those 29 victories included a City Runner-Up finish in 1926 and 19 shutouts. Coach Vince’s legendary 1925 team yielded just 25 points all season and compiled 25 consecutive shutout quarters.

In 1925 and 1926, the Golden Tornado posted 8-1 seasons.Although the makeup of Ohio High School Football changed dramatically

in 1972 with the birth of the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Harbin Postseason Computer Playoffs, Saint Ignatius continued to enjoy success on the area gridirons.

And directing a huge portion of those winning ways were Saint Ignatius Hall of Fame inductees, Coaches Mr. John J. Wirtz and Mr. Paul Nemec.

From 1951 through 1970, Coach Wirtz led his Wildcats to four City Cham-pionships and an overall mark of 146-40-6. Coach Wirtz put together one of the greatest teams in the history of area high school football - the 10-0 Hall of Fame City Champion Wildcats of 1964.

Behind one of the most storied all-around athletes ever to come out of Ohio - senior quarterback/safety Brian Dowling - Saint Ignatius capped its dominant ‘64 season with a 48-6 victory over Benedictine in the annual Thanksgiving Morning City Championship Charity Game at old Municipal Stadium. A crowd of 41,183 witnessed the Wildcats’ dominance, as on the second play from scrimmage Dowling called his own number and rambled 71 yards for a touchdown.

Dowling’s athletic careers at Saint Ignatius and Yale were so legendary that he became a regular character, “B.D.,” in the Doonesbury Comic Strip.

Coach Nemec, who succeeded Coach Wirtz, also produced four City Champion-ships. In 1972 and 1973, Coach Nemec’s Wildcats finished 9-1. Paul put together an overall record at Saint Ignatius of 42-16-2.

Prior to Coach Wirtz and Coach Nemec, Coach Fred George compiled a record of 19-6-3 and won two City Titles while directing Wildcats football from 1948

through 1950.As impressive as the records of Coach Vince, Coach Wirtz, Coach Nemec and

Coach George teams were, Saint Ignatius Football would reach a whole new level of state and national recognition under one of Coach Wirtz’s All-City tailbacks - Hall of Fame Coach Mr. Chuck Kyle.

Taking over his alma mater’s football program in 1983, Coach Kyle has set a standard that most high school coaches can only dream about.

Saint Ignatius had never qualified for the OHSAA playoffs until 1988, when Coach Kyle began what is one of the greatest runs not only in football-rich Ohio, but the entire nation.

From his 14-0 Division I State Championship Team of 1988 came a string of an Ohio-best 11 big-school state football championships, including a record five row from 1991 through 1995. The ‘Cats were state runners-up 1996.

The most successful coach in Cleveland area high school football and the most successful Division I coach in Northeast Ohio with 321 career victories entering the 2016 season, Coach Kyle has also guided the Wildcats to National Champion-ships in 1989, 1993 and 1995, and a National Runner-Up in 2008.

The ‘Cats enter 2016 seeking their 27th OHSAA playoff appearance. In what is one of this seasoned reporter’s fondest memories in covering and

reporting on Coach Kyle’s teams for The Plain Dealer came moments after the dramatic 10-7 victory over Cincinnati Princeton in the Division I 1988 State Championship Game at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, which produced Saint Ignatius’ first undefeated and untied season since 1964.

In the ‘Cats’ locker room at Ohio Stadium, Coach Kyle, while celebrating the dramatic goal-line stand that sealed the victory, lifted up his blue-and-gold sweater and pulled out two small gold footballs linked to a chain.

“They’re from my grandfather’s letter sweater when he played on a state championship team in Alabama in 1918 and from my dad’s letter-sweater when he competed on a state-championship team in Indiana in 1937,” Coach Kyle said. “I think I called on both of them in the end.”

Built in 1928, Byers Field has long been a landmark in Parma, Ohio. But Parma schools are not the only programs to utilize the facility.

The Wildcats have played in Byers Field, recently dedi-cated as Byers Field at Robert M. Boulton Stadium, in 32 of the last 34 seasons. The Cats’ first home game at Byers was a game against Canton McKinley on October 7, 2000.

Ever since, Byers Field has served as the Wildcats’ home stadium for football. Since its construction, Byers has been renovated five times, including in 2013.

The facility now seats about 11,850 fans, plus over 30 members of the media in its renovated press box. The stadium features lights, artificial turf, and locker rooms for both home and away teams.

The Wildcats have an 88-24 record in 112 games at Byers. Byers Field at Robert M. Boulton Stadium is named after

Carl C. Byers, the Parma Schools superintendent who led the 1953 renovation of the stadium, and Robert Boulton, a retired Superintendent of Athletics for the Parma City Schools and a Parma Senior High grad.
