STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE Today we resume the "Bread of Life" discourse from John's Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews' ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life--a marvelous promise, but this "reward" is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

ALTAR FLOWERS
A Beautiful Gift Donating to altar flowers is a simple way to glorify God, honor a loved one, and beautify the altar. You can choose any weekend. Flowers can be donated in honor of a living person or in memory of someone who has died, in celebration of an anniversary or other milestone, or in thanksgiving for friends or family. Their names will appear in the bulletin on the Sunday you select. If you prefer, you can simply give the flowers to the Glory of God. You can request special colors. Seeing the altar adorned with flowers is truly a gift that touches many people! If you wish to have flowers on the altar, please contact the church office
Prayer List The prayer list published in the bulletin each week is a vehicle to notify parishioners of those in need of prayer. We focus on praying for the sick, those who have died, and for those who are serving in the military.
Names will remain on the prayer chain for one month unless notified otherwise. To add or delete names from the list, please email [email protected]. For Saint James Church contact Suzie Lushbaugh, 240.420.3852.

THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A CATHOLIC?
Each year thousands of adults choose to become Catholics. They come from different backgrounds for different reasons: Some are already Christians from other traditions attracted by the teaching of the Catholic Church and by the example of individual Catholics they know. Some are from another faith or no faith at all who have heard about Jesus, His claim to forgive sin and His promise of eternal life. Some are non-Catholics who have been coming regularly to Mass for years with their Catholic relatives. They wish now to become full members of the Church. Perhaps you are Catholic and want to know more about the Catholic faith.
If you are interested in knowing more, please give Diane a call at 240.347.6174.
May they all be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you… so that the world may believe,” (John 17:21)

C & O CANAL DAYS
Saint Augustine's Church will be sponsoring the annual Cake Walk during the C & O Canal Days on August 25 and 26. We held last year's walk in the Community Building of Byron Memorial Park and, as of today, there has been no change of venue for this annual fundraiser for our church. It takes many cakes at least 40, (but last year we were blessed with over 60) to be successful. At only $1.00 to enter each walk, you can't beat the price if you are the winner. Sign-up sheets are in the atrium to help work at the Cake Walk. There is also a sign-up sheet to promise to make us a cake or two. Although the "homemade" variety are a treat, we find the store-bought also work for our winners. Cupcakes are great for the kids. We will receive cakes on Friday night. Aug. 24 in the atrium of St. Augustine's from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. or you may drop them off at the Community Building on Sat. or Sun. morning after 9 AM. Any questions?? Please call Patty Patterson (304) 274.2109.

[...] Hasta mi vida repugna a mi esposa, doy
asco a mis propios hermanos» (Jb 19,13.17).
Papa Francisco. Amoris Laetitia.
que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre...".
pudo inventar tan gran misterio? Mysterium fidei.
y resurrección nos has salvado, Señor". Mysterium fidei,
mysterium salutis.

martirio.
