If they were all one part, where would the body be? (1 Corinthians 12:19)

Saint Paul uses this famous analogy to reveal the importance we all play as Christ’s partners in salvation history. Using relatable terms, Paul makes the case that we are all necessary for the life of the Church; none but Christ is greater.

Today, the divisions within our country are being played out in the halls of Congress, trickling down to our workplaces and homes, and spread across social media. Divisions within our Church continue to exacerbate wounds unhealed and questions unanswered. “If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it;” we are left exasperated an exhausted.

But just as Paul encourages those early Christians, his words resonate to us today. If one part of our body is injured, then we do all we can to heal it. If the wound is self-inflicted, then we look in our hearts and to others for ways to heal both body and spirit. If we are tempted to just give up, then our body becomes weaker. We need one another in our communities and our Church; we must be “steadfast… knowing that in the Lord [our] labor is not in vain.”

Today we mark the beginning of Catholic Schools Week. Each day our Catholic schools honor groups whose support enables them to continue the mission of education and formation. Just as we are all one in the Body of Christ, His Church, we are also one in advancing the cause of Catholic schooling. This day we honor our parish family.

Saint James School does not exist in a vacuum; it is not just a group of buildings across Spring Street where we may occasionally go to Heller or the gym for an event. Our school is an integral part of our parish body. Whether or not we have children; whether or not our children even attended; we all have a responsibility for its success. Our school has enriched our community and is a constant reminder of our role as disciples: to bring Christ to others. Within an award-winning academic setting, discipleship is nurtured. Within these pews, it is matured.

I ask you then to pray for our students here today, give thanks for the sacrifices of others and join in hope for their future. I invite you to stop by our Open Houses from 10:00-12:00noon Sunday or from 9:00-11:00am Tuesday, January 29th.

Reflection Question: How will you make your year acceptable to the Lord?

Weekly Reflection y

Jesus Christ is the Light of the world. A Light no darkness can overpower.

PRESENTATION OF THE LORD CANDLEMAS

Saturday, February 2, 2019

Since the early centuries, Christians have marked the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord by blessing candles for use in church and

home. We will bless candles this year during the 8:30 a.m. Mass on Saturday, February 2. All who are there will be

invited to take a candle home to use during the year for special celebrations and feast days.

In this way, we will keep the seasons of the year together in the Light of Christ,

a Light no darkness can overpower.

2019 BISHOP’S LENTEN APPEAL BEGINS! At the end of this month many of us will receive a mailing regarding the 2019 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA). The theme for the 2019 BLA is “Together in the Light of Christ.” After reflecting upon the blessings that God has given you, please prayerfully consider making a pledge to this important appeal that funds many programs and ministries that serves thousands of people in our diocese. Together, through the BLA, let us renew our personal commitment to furthering the Lord’s work in our diocese.
