Spring Term: 18th January 2019 ‘To live, love and learn in our caring community.’
Dear Parents, Pupils, Staff and Parishioners, The new term is now in full swing. Year 6 arrived home safely on Friday from Dol y Moch. They had a fantastic time in North Wales trying lots of new challenges. As always the Dol y Moch staff were very impressed with our children’s behaviour and manners. Well done everyone!
Science Wow Day:
Year 3 were lucky to be the first children to take part in our opening science wow day of 2019. Despite having to squeeze in ukulele lessons and an assembly, both Classes 7 and 8 managed to build a model skeleton and label it by researching the structure using the internet. Many also managed to use their artistic skills by drawing skeletons using a computer programme, or by observing X-
rays and sketching the bones. Well done!
On Friday last, we were honoured to be invited to take part in one of the Schools Exhibitions at the largest annual meeting of science teachers in Europe. We travelled to the University of Birmingham by train, set up our stand and waited for the visitors to arrive! Five children from years 4 and 5 manned the stand, explaining to teachers from all around Europe about the Wow days that they had experienced. They also

demonstrated some of the activities, making skeleton models and researching about the bones using the internet.
In the afternoon, we had the opportunity to visit other stands in the meeting. The children met the TV presenter Johnny Ball, discussed a crime scene and used geological methods to unearth fossils. The children were a true credit to our school, showing incredible confidence in discussing science with teachers they had not met before, showing great enthusiasm and excitement. Mrs Blackburn and myself were so proud to have taken them along! Mrs A Caldwell
Year 1 Royalty for the Day! On Monday Year 1 enjoyed their Wow day as they dressed up as ‘Princes and Princesses’. The children prepared a wonderful tea party, making paper chains and decorating biscuits with icing and sweets. They had great fun dancing to Greensleeves.

Football : Well done to the football team this week they won 4-0 against Stoke Primary School, two goals from Terrell and one each from Callum and Jayden. Player of the match was Jayden. Well done!
Science, Technology. Engineering and Maths (STEM): In year 5 some of the children worked with Mrs Edge to enter a competition to solve one of three farming-related issues using Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). There were 3 categories the children could choose from:
Design a tractor of the future; Design an environment for a flock of 100 laying hens; Design a new snack product from four British ingredients.
There were over 1000 entries to the competition and we are delighted that Annvi, Maria, Lena, Amelia and Mariam were one of nine entries nationally to win a place in the final. The children designed a healthy volcano snack using British grown products. They have not only won money to spend on robotics products for school but also a group of children from year 5 will go on a fully funded farm visit. A professional chef will also be visiting us at school to help them turn their idea into a real product! The girls will be showcasing their design at an exhibition at the House of Commons during British Science Week, where the overall champion will be decided.
FU president Minette Batters said “With more than a thousand schools entering their designs, the competition clearly demonstrates that food and farming has a place in education; not only to engage young children in STEM subjects, but to develop their understanding about rural life and where their food comes from.
The girls showed perseverance and determination as well as creativity in their entry, making sure that they spent many lunchtimes continuing to refine and improve it. We are delighted for them and the experiences they have earned.
