A Note From Our Pastor My Dear Parishioners,

Happy Father’s Day to all of our fathers, living and deceased! This weekend we cele-

brate the great gift of fatherhood and we lift them all up in prayer. May Almighty God continue to bless and encourage them so that they may be great examples of faith and love. This weekend, we also focus on the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, which we celebrated as a Solemnity on Friday. Our Bishop has just written a beautiful reflection, “The Sa-cred Heart of Jesus and the Human Heart of the Priest Shall Beat as One”, which I invite you to read on the next page of this bulletin. May the Sacred Heart of our Lord continue to be a source of comfort and strength for all of us as we continue to do His Will during these challenging times. As Pope Saint John Paul II once remarked:

“In the Sacred Heart, every treasure of wisdom and knowledge is hidden.

In that Divine Heart beats God’s infinite love for everyone,

for each of us individually.” Pope Saint John Paul II

Peace, Fr. Mike

THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS AND THE HUMAN HEART OF THE PRIEST SHALL BEAT AS ONE A message from Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Devotion to the “Sacred Heart of Jesus” can be traced back to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries in the Catholic Church. Inspired by over 500 years of tradition, this devotion became part of the Church’s liturgy in 1670, with Mass and prayers composed by French priest St. John Eudes (1601-1680). Three years later, the Lord Jesus appeared multiple times to a 26-year-old French nun of the Visitation Order, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690), revealing the love and mercy for which the popular image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus has become a universal symbol. Pope Pius IX placed the feast in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the Catholic Church’s liturgical calendar in 1856, 19 days after Pentecost. This year it is celebrated on Friday, June 19.

In 2002, Pope St. John Paul II declared the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as an annual occasion for the Uni-versal Church to pray for the Sanctification of Priests. The joining of these two events is easy to understand and appreciate, especially when one recalls the words of St. John Vianney, patron of priests: “The priest is not a priest for himself … he is for you. The priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus.”

The reality of this love has been made unambiguously clear to me during these past few months of pandemic lock-down. As Bishop, I have witnessed something in the Diocese of Trenton that I have seen repeated so many times over the past 10 years: the constant love and care of our priests for their parishioners and others entrusted to their care in schools, chaplaincies, organizations and offices. The temporary coronavirus closure of our churches and workplaces, and the hun-ger of the faithful here for the Eucharist and other sacraments have been keenly, even painfully, felt by our pastors and priests as well. They have expressed to me – at every opportunity they had – how much they “missed being with their peo-ple.” How deeply moving it was to “hear” the pastoral love for parishioners in the emotion-filled voices of their priests! But they were never very far from their people.

With efforts to pray for, reach out to and keep in touch with the faithful; to minister to them in the face of unprece-dented obstacles; to speak the words of absolution through masks; to visit hospitals and nursing homes, when permitted, in protective gear to anoint the sick; to comfort small groups of grieving families in cemeteries at the burials of their loved-ones; to conduct meetings and classes, to broadcast creative and heartfelt video messages and live-streamed Masses, the diocesan and religious priests in our parishes and other ministries used every means at their disposal to keep the Catholic faith alive and flourishing in the experiences of their faithful, despite the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. The Sa-cred Heart of Jesus could be heard beating everywhere throughout the four counties of the Diocese of Trenton, reminding us all that “nothing can separate us from the love of Christ that comes to us in Christ Jesus, our Lord (Romans 8:39).”

And now, slowly and carefully, we are returning to limited public Masses together and sacramental life.

The Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus speaks profoundly of his endless mercy, despite the punctures and wounds of human sin and ingratitude revealed in its imagery. Speaking to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque during her visions, the Lord Jesus asked her to invite all who behold his Sacred Heart to immerse themselves in the embrace of his Divine Love and Forgiveness. That message is not obscured in the ministry of his priests who – despite the horrible scandals of some abu-sive priests who have pierced his Heart deeply in recent decades – beg for the daily sanctification of their priestly lives so that they, in turn, can lead the faithful entrusted to their care to sanctification.

St. John Vianney once reflected, “A priest goes to heaven or a priest goes to hell with a thousand people behind.” On this Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we must adore him anew as we pray fervently for the sanctification of priests in our day so that they will continue to lead the many “thousands,” indeed millions, to heaven through the holiness to which Christ has called them, and us all, in his Church. May the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the heart of every priest beat as one.

The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

“The heart has always been seen as the "center" or essence a person and the wellspring of our emotional lives and love. Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is devotion to Jesus Christ Himself, but in the particular ways of medi-tating on his interior life and on His threefold love -- His divine love, His burning love that fed His human will, and His sensible love that affects His interior life. Pope Pius XII of blessed memory writes on this topic in his 1956 encyclical, Haurietis Aquas (On Devotion To The Sacred Heart):

The Friday that follows the Second Sunday in Time After Pentecost is the Feast of the Sacred Heart which brings to mind all the attributes of His Divine Heart mentioned above. Many Catholics prepare for this Feast by beginning a Novena to the Sacred Heart on the Feast of Corpus Christi, which is the Thursday of the week before. On the Feast of the Sacred Heart itself, we can gain a plenary indulgence by making an Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart.

From the earliest days of the Church, "Christ's open side and the mystery of blood and water were meditated upon, and the Church was beheld issuing from the side of Jesus, as Eve came forth from the side of Adam. It is in the eleventh and twelfth centuries that we find the first unmistakable indications of devotion to the Sacred Heart. Through the wound in the side, the wound in the Heart was gradually reached, and the wound in the Heart symbolized the wound of love." (Catholic Encyclopedia)

This general devotion arose first in Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries of that time, especially in response to the devotion of St. Gertrude the Great, but specific devotions became popularized when St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690), a Visitation nun, had a personal revelation involving a series of visions of Christ as she prayed before the Blessed Sacrament. She wrote, "He disclosed to me the mar-vels of his Love and the inexplicable secrets of his Sacred Heart." Christ emphasized to her His love -- and His woundedness caused by Man's indifference to this love.

He promised that, in response to those who consecrate themselves and make reparations to His Sa-cred Heart, that:

He will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.

He will establish peace in their homes.

He will comfort them in all their afflictions.

He will be their secure refuge during life, and above all, in death.

He will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings.

Sinners will find in His Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy.

Lukewarm souls shall become fervent.

Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection.

He will bless every place in which an image of His Heart is exposed and honored.

He will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts.

Those who shall promote this devotion shall have their names written in His Heart.

In the excessive mercy of His Heart that His all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the First Fridays in nine consecutive months the grace of final persever ance; they shall not die in His disgrace, nor without receiving their sacraments. His divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment.”

Backpack Project 2020

Dear Parishioners:

It is our hope that we will again be able to continue the wonderful backpack project that has helped to provide essential school supplies to so many children in need over the past 22 years! We look forward to providing backpacks with school supplies for the fall to clients of Catholic Charities in the Trenton area as well as in our immediate area. Over these many years, our Parish has provided the empty backpacks and parishioners were invited to take an empty backpack home and return it with school supplies needed by the children. These backpacks were then distributed to needy families. Due to present COVID-19 restrictions, we are currently unable to schedule the distri-bution or collection of the backpacks. However, we would like to present the yearly list of items that are always needed by the children, so that these items can be purchased by parish-ioners as they are available. We are currently in the process of determining the timing for this year’s backpack project, and we are tentatively targeting the month of August for the distribu-tion (and collection) of the backpacks. Much will depend on the schedule of the reopening of the Church and the regulations on public gatherings. If you would like to help with our 2020 Backpack Project, the list of supplies is noted be-low. Please continue to check the bulletin and our website for the most current status of this wonderful effort!

Bishop O’Connell has invited all of the Catholic faithful to join with him in prayer to our Blessed Mother during this time of pandemic:

O Mary, loving Mother, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, who at the Cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keep-ing your faith firm.

You, Salvation of Your People, know what we need, and we are sure you will pro-vide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection.

Be present to all those suffering from coronavirus and to those who care for them: families, friends, neighbors, doctors, nurses, staff, government officials, pastors, priests and all who seek to do God’s will. Bring comfort and calm to the elderly, to those at risk and to all who are afraid. Be for us all a beacon of hope, lighting our path once more to the heart of your beloved Son, the Divine Healer and Health of the Sick.

Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.
