In Scripture, we read that St. Paul asked the Gentile churches to take up a collection to support the Church in Jerusalem. World Mission Sunday invites us to support the 1,150 of the youngest dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe. Your prayers and generous gifts to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith will help mission-aries offer the poor in these areas practical help as they share the mercy of God and will ensure the development of local dio-ceses, and support the work of priests, religious and lay leaders who serve those in most need. Minister to the whole world through your generous gift next weekend!

VOLUNTEER NEEDED! Music is the medicine of the mind. At Mary, Queen and Mother in Shrewsbury, we have a new organ just waiting for an organ-ist. Our Sunday Mass at 10:15 a.m. is well attended with many residents and family. We are in need of a volunteer to bring the music alive. If you, or someone you know can help, we would be thrilled! At this time, all Sundays are available. Call 961-8000, ext. 1345.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

“It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” MARK 10:25 Jesus uses tough language that we may not want to hear. But we all are called to be generous with all our gifts. Not just the ones we pick and choose, but all our gifts: our time in prayer to God, our talent in participating in parish ministries and our treasure supporting our local parish and other charities.

Members of the Knights of Columbus will be soliciting dona-tions for their annual Tootsie Roll drive to aid mentally chal-lenged children after all Masses this weekend. Your donations will be greatly appreciated.

FAMILY PRAYER A family that prays together, stays together is an old saying that is still true today. It is a great way to remember our thanks to God for all our blessings and to petition Him for any spiritual/material needs. "Give us this day our daily bread." It is a great way to pray for others in need whether it be health, jobs, spiri-tual healing or to bless those who bless us. October is a month set aside in our Church calendar to cele-brate in special ways our Mother Mary and pro-life causes. It is a great month to begin with the Family Rosary. Invite your neighbors to join in! This beginning can lead to a lifetime of prayer for yourself and those you love. Remember our goal is an eternal relationship with God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Why not begin now!

DYNAMIC CATHOLIC BULLETIN REFLECTIONS Partakers of the Divine Nature. Have you read Partakers of the Divine Nature, Archbishop Carlson’s pastoral letter on spiri-tual formation? We have encouraged parishes to study it this fall. It works great for small groups, as there are reflections after each of the main sections. You can purchase the letter from the Office of Communications or download it for free on the archdiocesan website. “We are meant to know God, not simply to know about Him.” Archstl.org/dynamic.

CATECHESIS SUNDAY On Catechesis Sunday, October 18th, we will continue the DVD series, OREMUS LET US PRAY, right after the 8:30 a.m. Mass in the parish hall. OREMUS is a DVD series on prayer, highly recommended in this YEAR of PRAYER. All are wel-come and the DVD will conclude at 10:00 a.m.

PREPARE for the “YEAR of MERCY” Pope Francis has asked that the relics of St. Maria Goretti, the youngest saint every canonized by the Church, come to the United States as a witness of “mercy.” Many Catholics know the story of young Maria’s purity, but this pilgrimage empha-sizes her practice of mercy. On her deathbed, she forgave her attacker and her forgiveness led to his conversion. The relic of the body of St. Maria Goretti will be on display on Monday, October 19th at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Belleville, from 7:00 a.m. 11:00 p.m. There is no charge. This is an experi-ence of prayer and faith that millions of pilgrims in Italy have experienced over the decades. Now the people of the St. Louis have the opportunity to make the pilgrimage here!

In the spirit of the celebration of the 50th Anniver-sary of the parish, and when space permits, we will print fun trivia facts from the year 1966. Facts will be presented from many different categories such as

news and events, pop culture, sports, technology, and others. Enjoy these throwbacks! Gallon of gas: $.32 Average cost of a new car: $2,650.00 On January 1st the subway strike in New York brings the

city to a stop. Within a few days the union’s demands are met with a 15% pay raise.

The U.S. Department of Transportation is created. All cigarette packets in the United States must carry the

health warning "Caution! Cigarette smoking may be haz-ardous to your health."

Pampers creates the first disposable diaper.

ST. LOUIS COMMUNITY COLLEGE CONTINUING EDUCATION

St. Louis Community College Continuing Education depart-ment is preparing the 2016 Caregiving at Home Series, and is offering a session of one of our most popular programs of the series this fall. This series provides an opportunity for individu-als caring for a family member, friend or helping those needing assistance with personal care. We will be offering Caregiving and Dementia: Understanding Difficult Behavior, on Monday, October 19th, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Meramec location on Big Bend Rd. This session will explore how behavior is one of the primary ways people with dementia communicate their needs and feelings as their ability to use language is lost. Participants will learn strate-gies to manage the real challenges that some of the most common behaviors of Alzheimers disease bring on, including decoding behavioral messages, and identifying common be-havior triggers. Cost is $15. Call 314-984-7500 to register.

THE ACCENT The Accent: Exploring the Path to a Rejuvenating Life is a book written by Binu Edathumparambil, associate pastor at St. Joseph’s in Manchester. The book focuses on human func-tioning and relationships and ties together psychology and spirituality. It invites us to look at our lives from a new per-spective. The book is available now from WestBow Press (www.westbowpress.com) or your preferred online retailer.

ADULT FAITH FORMATION AROUND THE COMMUNITY

SPIRITUAL OPPORTUNITIES

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD When the rich young man in this week’s Gospel asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life, the answer is simply “nothing.” Or to put it another way, “You don’t have to do any-thing to earn it. Simply do not let anything get in the way. Don’t kill, or commit adultery, or steal, or lie, or defraud, or any such things that tend to muddy the focus of our lives.” Beyond that it seems we don’t have to do anything. But, the young man protests, he has avoided all these things. And so the reply Jesus then offers is, in effect, don’t let your riches get in the way either. Easier said than done, and more diffi-cult than imagined. More difficult than threading a needle with camel hair when the hair is still on the camel; more difficult than getting a camel inside your house, whether through your pet door or your back door or maybe even your garage door. Camels don’t shrink. Neither does our hold on riches. Both tend to get in the way. So what does one then do, we ask. Curious—that was the same response in Jesus’ day as well. And over the centuries believers have sought ways to keep wealth in perspective, or at least some things that might help do so. Yet it’s all about trying to make sure that as little as possible gets in the way of finding God among the mishmash of life. —Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis Copyright © 2014, World Library Publications.
