ThenAbrahammeetsGodonestarrystarrynightandGodmakeshimanofferhecan’trefuse:thepromiseoflandanddescendants.GodpromisesthatSarahandAbrahamwillbecomenotsimplyafamily,whichistheirfondesthope,butanation.AllAbrahamhastodoisputhisconfidenceinGodandthejourneyGodwilltakehimon.Abrahamgrabshiswife,hisflocks,andhisstaffandheadsoutintotheunknown. For decadesmore, however, there are no children. How does Abrahamhold fast to the promise of landwhen for the rest of his life, in fact, hewill neverownone square inchof landexcept fortheplotwhereheburiesSarahand,eventually, isburiedhimself?Godpromisedhimanation.AllAbrahamsawwasthebirthoftwosons,oneofwhomhefeltobligedtosendawayalongwiththemother.Abrahamcontinuedtolivetherestofhis life in tents,pitching themdownand folding themuphere, there,andeverywherebetweenEgyptandCanaan. Jeremiahisprophecy'santi-hero, inaway. Ineachcrucialhour,hewhinesandcomplains, losesheartandfocus.He'sfirsttoaccuseGodwhenthingsaren'tgoingwell.Asprophetsgo,Jeremiah'snottheposterchildforconfidenceinGod'spromiseofrescue.Yethe'sapersistentandlong-livedservantofGod.Jeremiahreceiveshiscall before the age of 20—the age of conscription into Israel's armies—which is why he informs Godimmediatelythathe's"tooyoung"tobecalledupforduty.Nonetheless,hebeginshistruth-tellingtothekingwellbeforeBabylon'sfinalassaultonJerusalem,andkeepsonprophesyingthroughthenation'sexile,upuntilhe'skidnappedbyhiscountrymen,hauledofftoEgypt,andeventuallymurdered. Thisloyalty-in-imperfectionexplainspartoftheattractionwefeeltothisfellow:Jeremiah'snotaparagonofgraceandcourage,yetGodchooseshim,useshim,andhegets the jobdoneall thesame.Despiteamarkedtendency toward lamentation, Jeremiahnever shirkshisdutynor tamperswith thegivenmessage tomake itmorepalatableandpopular.LikeMoses,Amos,andIsaiahbeforehim,Jeremiahdidn'tparticularlywantthisjob.A priest's son, he may have been looking forward to a routine life of ritual and sacrifice. Once summoned,however,hethrowshimselfintotheassignment,evenwhenitwindshimupinthemuddypit. This iswhy Jeremiah is consideredabiblical "type"of Jesus:much like the suffering servant Isaiahwritesaboutsoeloquently.Jesustoowouldappreciatethathismissionwasn'ttosucceedinpersuadinghisgenerationtorepentance,togeteveryonetoseethingshisway.Peaceonearthwouldn'tarriveatthecloseoftheSermonontheMount.Instead,theministryofJesuscreatesasimilarturmoiltoJeremiah'smostunwelcomewords.ThemoreJesustellsthetruth,thecloserhegetstobeingcrucified. Households continue to be divided by the gospel today. Parentsmay commit themselves,while childrenwander.Onespouseembracestheway,theotherisskeptical.Thehouseholdofchurchitselfisacornucopiaofpassionateavowal, simplesincerity,hesitationanddoubt,andhalf-heartedmembership.We'renotallonthesamepage.Inthematteroffaithaboveallothers,freewillremainsparamount.Thefireisblazing.Notallwillchoosetobekindledbyit. —AliceCamille

VOLUNTEERS/CATECHISTSNEEDED

Saint John XXIII Parish is in need of Catechists, those willing to share faith with children and youth. Recruitingcatechistsisoftenoneofthemostdifficultchallengesthatparishleadersface.Weknowthattheinvitationtobecomeacatechist,whileflattering,canalsobeintimidating.Oftenparishionersareunsureiftheyarequalifiedorcapableofformingothersinthefaith.Asaresult,somecomeintothisministrywithabitofreluctance,maybealittlefear.Otherswanttoavoidthecallingcompletely.ButtheLordhasgiveneachandeveryoneofusadegreeinlife!JesuscallsusbyourBaptismtostepoutinfaithandnottobeafraid!WehopetobegincatechismclassesonSunday,September11,2016butfirstweneed to recruit anadequatenumberof catechistsandassistants. EXTRAORDINARYMINISTERSOFHOLYCOMMUNION

InSaintJohnXXIIIParish,formanyyearsExtraordinaryMinistersofHolyCommunionhaveassistedinthedistributionoftheHolyEucharistbothduringMassandtothesickandshut-inatthehospitalandintheirhomes/residences.Wearesoverythankfultoallthosemenandwomenwhohavegenerouslygivenoftheirtimeovertheyearstoassistinthisministry.

Sincemanyofourparishionerstendtogoawayduringthesummermonths,wearewaitinguntiltheearlyfalltoholdaworkshopandretreatforthosebeingcalledtoserveinthisministry.Plansarenowbeingmadetoholdthisworkshopandretreat on Saturday, September 10, 2016. Once theprocessofdiscernmentand formation is complete,ourPastorwillforwardthenamesofthosebeingcalledtothisministrytotheArchbishopfor(re)appointmentandcommissioning.

Inthemeantime,accordingtotheiravailability,thosewhohavebeenservingasCommunionMinistersduringthelastthreeyearsarekindlyaskedtocontinueservingthroughthesummermonths. Incasesofrealnecessity,ourPastormayalsodeputeothersuitablemembersofthefaithfultoassistwiththedistributionHolyCommuniononaindividualoccasion.Also, thosehoping toserveorcontinue in thisministryespecially to thesickandtheshut-inareaskedtocontactourpastoral assistant, Sharon, to make arrangement over the summer months to complete police checks and othernecessarysafeenvironmentrequirements.

Aswemoveforwardinfaithasaparishcommunity,wearelookingtoenlistandengageparishionerswithappropriategifts and talents to become involved in the establishment of both a new Parish Stewardship Committee anda new Parish Fundraising Committee. AstheArchdioceseofWinnipegbeginsitsSynodthisyearandaswerecallourbeginningsasaparishcommunity50yearsagoandcelebrateanewbeginningasSaintJohnXXIIIParish,itisaveryappropriatetimeforustogethertotakeADeep,BiblicalLookatJesusChrist.ThebetterweunderstandJesus,thebetterweunderstandourselvesandourcallingasdisciplesofJesusChrist. Jesus is the Anointed One – the ultimate priest, prophet and king foreshadowed throughout the HebrewScriptures.JoinusaswedeepenourrelationshipwithJesusChristthroughBishopRobertBarron’sDVD-basedStudyProgram:Priest,Prophet,King. Explorethebiblicalarchetypesofpriest,prophetandkingandseehowJesusistheultimatefulfillmentofeachone.Throughoutthisexperience,youwillbetterunderstandwhoJesusreallyisandalsorealizeyourownpriestly,propheticandkinglymission. On September 20th and 21st, our parishwill begin thePriest, Prophet, King study program. SHARINGGOD’SGIFTS2016

Thetotalamountofthe2016SGG’sAppealis$1,944,100.Thisrepresentsa1.4%increaseoverthepreviousyear,reflecting the impact of inflation. Our parish share of the 2016 Appeal is based on our parish’s 2014 Offertorycollection.Thus,ourParish’sappealtargetfor2016is$50,670.AsoftheendofJuly,$7,485.00hasbeenreceivedthroughtheparishofficewhichrepresents14.77%ofourparishappealtargetfor2016.Soslowlybutsurelywearemakingsomeprogress.

Wearehopingandprayingfortheparticipationofmanymoreparishionerssotogetherwecanpickupspeedand make our target once again in 2016 as we did in 2015. Your parish building and maintenance committee has been pleased to complete following items in 2016:(1)renovationofthereconciliationroomincludinganewglassdoortoconformtosafeenvironmentstandards, (2)relocationofthechoir,and(3)parkinglotremediationandsweeping.

AsI’msuremostofyouknow,wehaveagoodbuilding.However,at49yearsofageitisstartingtoneedsomemajormaintenanceand repair. Tomaintain the integrityof thebuildingenvelope (i.e. itsouter shell),weneed toreplacemanybrokenandcrackedbricksandre-pointthebrickanddecorativemasonrytrimpanels.Wehaveaquoteforthisworkandwouldliketoproceedpriortoanotherfreezeseason.Thecostofthisworkwillbeapproximately$12,500.00.[Sofar,asofJuly31st,atotalof$3,500.00hasbeendonated.]
