SAINT JOHN’S 30 TH ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP EVENT We take great pride in this Annual Scholarship program which aligns with our goal of becoming an Employer of Choice, thereby attracting the best talent to work at Saint John’s. In May of this year, resident and Foundation Board & Scholarship Committee member, Lloyd Lewis, created the Saint John’s Scholarship Endowment Fund to ensure that funding for our scholarships remains available well into the future. The Committee opened the 2014 application process to a broader group of educational pursuits. In addition to healthcare careers, the award program now includes training, skill-building, and advancement courses that lead to a certificate or a degree in any Saint John’s career opportunities. When first-time awardee, Crystal Morgan, thanked the Scholarship Committee, she acknowledged that her 20-year dream of entering the nursing field was finally coming true. Second-time recipient, Amanda Ames, was simply eloquent, “It is with immense gratitude that I accept this incredible donation towards my future as a nurse. To me, this scholarship is more than just monetary; it is the feeling of having an entire commu- nity behind me, believing in me and my future. I feel extremely lucky to be a part of the Saint John’s family, knowing that with the community behind me, I will accomplish great things.” Income from the sale of items donated to Saint John’s Thrift Shoppe supports the Scholarship Program allowing us to award larger scholarships –$50,000 in just the last three years – all from the sale of unwanted treasures. Priceless! Going forward, net proceeds from the Thrift Shoppe will be transferred to the newly created Scholarship Endowment Fund. You are invited to help us grow this worthy Fund. Foundation NewsFOUNDATION REPORT Saint John’s Communities Foundation Board is charged with fiduciary accountabilities that include stewardship practices of our funds and prudent investment management. We value the time, expertise, and generosity of the board: Renée Anderson, Dick Bibler, Suzy Brennan, Bill Goldammer, Lloyd Lewis, and Dick Miller.

There is a full menu of endowed funds to ensure donor interests. Distributions from each of the individual funds are made annually on the basis of 5% of the average market value of the fund over a rolling twenty calendar quarters.

• The Chaplaincy Fund, designed to develop resources to assure the continuing presence of an Episcopal Chaplain within our community. • The Chapel Music Fund, designed to finance the provision of musical enrichment of the worship experience in the Saint John’s Chapel. • The Directors’ Fund for Charitable Care, designed to provide support for residents whose personal resources can no longer fully cover their residence costs. • The LifeStreams Endowment Fund, designed to develop and sustain resources to deepen and broaden the quality of wellness programming within Saint John’s. • The Scholarship Endowment Fund to sustain and broaden the existing program that offers financial awards to individual employees for continuation of educational pursuits for the field of healthcare or career-building at Saint John’s. • The Jean B. Tyler Program Fund, designed to create a program presenting information about policy issues of a local, metropolitan, regional, state-wide, national or international character. • The Visually-Impaired Fund was established in 2005 by the former Sunrise Foundation to provide support to organizations with missions to serve blind and visually-impaired persons. • The Unrestricted Fund is an important sustainer to our Community by making annual distribu- tions to the general budget, without restriction as to the use of the distributions, which are then available for allocation by decisions of Administration or the Board of Directors.

Residents and friends are encouraged to consider making a gift, large or small, lifetime or through an estate plan, to any of these Funds to provide long-term sustainability for these programs that are so much a part of who we are as a community. Or, consider establishing your own fund in the Foundation for a particular program or interest.

BEQUEST TO SUPPORT THE FOUNDATION’S IMPORTANT WORK

Although John Ogden is no longer with us, his memory will live on through a

bequest to Saint John’s Foundation. John’s legacy gift of $20,000 was directed

to the Foundation’s Unrestricted Fund. His gift was purposefully unrestricted in

nature to add growth as well as the opportunity to underwrite a special program

or acquisition that would enhance life at Saint John’s. In his obituary, his son

John Ogden, Jr. states, “He was just a guy who loved life…He just loved people.”

We give thanks to John.

FRIENDS OF SAINT JOHN’S THRIFT SHOPPEWe could not do it without you...Thank you to all our donors and all our customers. ESTATE & LEGACY PLANNINGThere are many ways to give. Naming Saint John’s in your will or as a beneficiary in your living trust is one way. If your residency contract has a refund-able option, you may want to consider designating a portion of those funds as a tax-deductible gift. As always, discussions are confidential and can include your family and/or financial advisor to determine how to maximize tax savings and other benefits.

VINTAGE ICON DONATION and DEDICATION

Throughout their many trips abroad, religious art spoke in a loud voice

to Mac and Hazelyn McComas. One find led to another and then

another until there was an entire collection at their lives’ end. Their

children, James, Paul, David and Rachel, had thoughtful discussions of

where the vintage icons, along with some contemporary pieces, could

find a new home that would honor the memory of their parents.

Our own Chapel of Saint John the Evangelist was blessed to be one

of the recipients. The four vintage international pieces were appraised

to have a combined valued of $10,000. Just recently, these distinctive

icons were dedicated to the Chapel in a prayerful service to a full audi-

ence by Chaplain Jana Troutman-Miller. The international icons are on

the west wall of the Chapel; the contemporary icons are in the Narthex

on the west wall atop the bookcase. Stop in to view them. Saint John’s

is grateful for this meaningful and generous gift of the heart.

GRATITUDE TO OUR CHEERLEADERBill Gaus, resident and former member of Saint John’s Foundation Board, is our cheerleader at the Evan & Marion Helfaer Foundation. As a long-time trustee, Bill encouraged us to submit a request which told our mission story to the panel reviewing grant submissions to the Helfaer Foun-dation. This year’s award of $10,000 has been designated to the Directors’ Fund for Charitable Care. This gift of significance will be added to the principal of the Fund and invested for growth to create an income source for benevolent support from earnings. We extend our deep

gratitude for this award.

Hazelyn McComas is pictured here in her Saint John’s apartment near several of the vintage icons which decorated her home.

COULD WE THANK YOU? We just love to thank our donors. If you have named Saint John’s in your will or estate plans, please take time to tell us of your planned gift and you will be added as a member of our Legacy Society. We look forward to thanking you personally at our annual donor event scheduled for the 5th of November.

GIVING WITH PURPOSE – LEGACY DONOR SPOTLIGHTWhen Claire Greene moved to Saint John’s four years ago, she quickly became impressed and humbled by the many accomplishments of other residents with whom she was becoming acquainted. There were authors, artists, collegeprofessors, MD’s and PhD’s. Yet with the friendly atmosphere for which Saint John’s is noted, she felt right at home.

“I consider my biggest accomplishment, besides graduating from Wellesley, was raising happy, healthy children who have achieved much on their own. I was raising my family at a time when few women worked outside the home; so I was a stay-at-home mom, and thankful that I could be. It allowed a life of volunteer involvement with numerous organizations over the years, for several of which I served as President,” says Claire.

She is a dedicated reader of newspapers and periodicals, namely those which deal with current events, medicine and science, especially geography and astronomy. “I know a little about a lot,” states Claire. Playing bridge is a favorite activity along with writing verse and solving crossword puzzles – anything ‘to keep the brain well-oiled.’

Claire feels very blessed to have had the means to contribute to many worthy causes over the years, and hopes to continue to do so. Her recent generous gift to Saint John’s Foundation was designated to the Directors’ Fund for Charitable Care which helps those residents who have outlived their assets. The Fund is permanently endowed. Thank you, Claire, for enjoying the gift of generous giving.
