STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him?” JAMES 2:15 What is more important—being rich in faith or rich in possessions? Society teaches us that possessions are most important. God teaches a different lesson. When we are rich in faith we know that material things really do not matter and we are more willing to share what we have.

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ SEPTEMBER 6, 2015

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK THANK YOU FROM THE MISSIONARY SISTERS

The Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary wish to thank you for your generous

response to our appeal which amounted to $4,406. Your interest and concern is a real source of encouragement to us and our various missionary endeavors. Please be assured of a continuous remembrance in the prayers of all of us. THANK YOU!

With the approach of Labor Day, I thought you might enjoy reading some thoughts drawn

from a review by Edward Rothstein of the permanent exhibition housed on the 80th floor of the Empire State Building. The review, from the New York Times of 7-6-11, is called “A View Inside King Kong’s Perch.” Mr. Rothstein first remarked on what greatly impressed him from a tour of the observation deck on the 102nd floor, which he visited before seeing the exhibit, something, he wrote, that “I have been made forcefully aware of by the jolts of wind”:

… not the building as completed object, secure and established, dominating the cityscape, but the building as it came to be. Because it was in the midst of these whipping winds and unsettling heights that welders, riveters, steamfitters, bricklayers, marble setters, metal lathers, glaziers and roofers pieced this building together in unforgiving, empty space in an astounding 11 months.

The Empire State Building, which opened on May 1 of 1931, took the efforts of more than 3,400 workers, and was completed at a rate of time that has remained unequalled. The author of the construction notebook that forms part of the Skyscraper Museum’s display also honors the memory of the six men who

died working on the building, at one point acknowledging “our debt to them” and our “universal kinship” with the “lowly Carpenter of Nazareth.” The author of the construction notebook also mentioned a remark by the great English culture critic John Ruskin, which Mr. Rothstein says would be a good choice to be posted along with the other material of the exhibit:

When we build, let us think that we build forever. Let it not be for present delight, nor for present use alone; let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for … and that men will say, as they look upon the labor and wrought substance of them, “See! This our fathers did for us.”

Whatever our work in life is, may we do it as well as we can. In this way we will be sure to contribute to the building of God’s kingdom that Jesus so often spoke of. I hope all of you enjoy a delightful Labor Day.

The WEEKLY study topics include Matthew, James, Revelation, The Prophets, as well as Mary: A Biblical walk with the Blessed Mother.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

THIS week we will take up the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. This collection supports Catholic organizations that provide affordable shelter and train seminarians in a region that still struggles from the effects of Soviet

rule. By providing pastoral care, catechesis, and funding for building renovations, your donations help to restore the Church and build the future in the region. Please give generously by using your parish envelope for this collection or by putting your donation in an envelope marked “CCEE.” (Checks should be made out to “Saint Joseph Church.”)

CAMPUS MINISTRIES If you have a student going to college at Fairleigh Dickinson (Teaneck), Kean, Montclair State, New Jersey City Univ., NJIT, Ramapo College or Stevens Institute, pick up a handout on the “College Campus Ministry” in our church literature racks for Mass times and welcome events at those respective schools.

CATECHISTS NEEDED FOR GRADE 7 Help share our faith with our seventh graders on Wednesdays from 4:45-6:10 pm. Call Arlene Kennedy at 201-261-1144.

WELCOME BACK! A MESSAGE FROM

OUR PRINCIPAL Saint Joseph School welcomes all our students and

school families to a brand new school year! Our first day of class is Wednesday, September 9 and it will be a staggered opening to make it easier for parents with children in multiple grades to see each child off on the first day. Upper School (grades 5-8) will start at 8:00 am; the lower school (Kindergarten-grade 4) will begin at 8:30 am. (We will welcome our preschool students in the greenhouse on Monday, September 14.) There will be early dismissal at 12 noon on each of the first three days (September 9-10-11). After Care will be available. Be sure to circle September 18-19-20 for our 2nd annual Fall Family Carnival. It promises to be a fun-filled event for everyone—school families and parishioners alike! We hope you can join us.

MOST REVEREND THOMAS A. DONATO

AUXILIARY BISHOP OF NEWARK 1940-2015

Saint Joseph parish was blessed to have Bishop Donato celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation with us . On May 8, 2010, he confirmed 113 of our young people. His warmth and kindness made a great impression on both teens and adults alike. Sadly, Bishop Donato, who also served as Pastor of Saint Henry Church in Bayonne and Titular Bishop of Jamestown, passed away on August 25. May eternal rest grant unto his soul.
