STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as a possession.”

GENESIS 15:7

Just as the Lord gave Abraham, Moses and the Israelites a land to possess, He has also given each of us a home. Whether our home is grand or humble, it is a gift from God. Abraham prepared a great sacrifice to the Lord in gratitude for the home God gave him. How do we show our gratitude to God for the home He has given us? Do we make a sacrifice of any kind? Do we return any of our finances to God, investing equally in our eternal home?

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT~ FEBRUARY 21, 2016

SCHOOL: sjsusa.org REL. ED.: sjcnjre.org

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

∎ Bishop Arthur Serratelli of the Pater-son Diocese has written “A Pastoral Letter to College Students,” a timely and challenging message he released on January 28, the

feast of St. Thomas Aquinas. In it he noted that recent surveys have shown that 25% of Catholic students adhere to the values of secularism, not too surprising a finding given that this is the dominant viewpoint of their professors, 87% of whom have no problem with abortions, to take just one issue. Bishop Serratelli recalled something the late Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen once said: “Dead bodies float downstream. It takes live bodies to resist the current.” If you would like to read this pastoral letter, it is available at the website of the Diocese of Paterson: www.rcdop.org ∎ Although the March for Life in Washington fell on the day of the paralyzing snowstorm that struck the East on January 23, it still drew an estimated one- third of its usual several hundred thousand participants (most of them young), despite the two- foot snowfall and blizzard winds. The media took little note of this, which is not surprising, since the annual march is largely ignored by most of its outlets and given no coverage at all by many of the most influential of them. When several Midwest groups were returning from the march on January 23 and were stranded on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, members of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis’s youth ministries built an altar of snow so they could have Sunday Mass. A group from Iowa joined them. ∎ Father Paul Farren has written Freedom and Forgiveness: A Fresh Look at the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Paraclete Press). I hope it is even nearly as good as the foreword to it by Jean Vanier, who is famous for his work with the L’Arche communities of men and women with mental handicaps. Vanier writes that “His book flows from an understanding of Confession as a meeting of love and as a renewal of friendship.” That is exactly so, And I hope you will consider using this important and beautiful sacrament during this Lenten season. There will be many opportunities for you to do so.

Msgr. David Hubba

SISTER AURELIA CERNY, O.S.F. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Sr. Aurelia Cerny, principal of Saint Joseph School from 1982-1997. Sr. Aurelia entered the School

Sisters of St. Francis in 1953. She earned a bachelor’s degree in general science for secondary school from Duquesne University and a masters in education and administration from Seton Hall University. She taught primary and middle grade students in Pennsylvania and in Clifton, NJ before beginning a 40-year career as a Catholic school principal in both states. In addition to her tenure at Saint Joseph, she served as principal in Closter, Demarest and Denville, NJ. Sr. Aurelia introduced computer education to Saint Joseph School along with advanced math and science courses. She touched the lives of countless students and their families during her years of dedicated service to SJS. May eternal rest grant unto her soul, O Lord, and may she rest in peace.

Last Saturday at our 5:00 pm Mass, in addition to offering a special blessing to all married couples present, Monsignor Hubba had the pleasure of presiding over a renewal of wedding vows of longtime parishioners George and Gail Fabiano who will celebrate their 48th anniv- ersary this year. Congratulations, George & Gail!
