Last week we started to read from St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians; we will continue to hear from Ephesians until the end of August. Ephesians is the great Pauline letter about the church. It deals, however, not so much with a congregation in the city of Ephesus in Asia Minor as with the worldwide church, the head of which is Christ, the purpose of which is to be the instrument for making God’s plan of salvation known throughout the universe. The language is often that of doxology and prayer, indeed of liturgy and hymns. In Today’s reading, St. Paul discusses that the salvation brought by Christ is meant not only for God’s chosen people, but for all people. Even the Old Testament prophets pointed to God’s intent for universal salvation. Guided by the Mosaic Law and by privileged knowledge of the one, true God, the people of Israel anticipated from ancient days the promised messiah. Now, Gentiles who were once far removed from these truths have been brought “near by the blood of Christ.” It was always God’s intent that salvation would be universally available; now, in Christ, the grace of salvation is, in fact, available to all, without consideration of race, gender, or even adherence to the Law of the old covenant. Christ came as the embodiment of “peace,” breaking down divisions and reconciling factions so we might become “one new person” – or better, one new humanity, rather than two. In his body, through his willing sacrifice, Christ reconciled Jews and non-Jew to God, the Father. The “enmity” that previously divided us was crucified with Christ on the cross. His death and Resurrection were a living sermon on peace for both Jew and Gentile. Christ preached less in word than in deed, and his sacrifice has given all who seek him equal access through the Spirit to our almighty and loving Father.

Pbro. Santiago Martin

Note From the Pastor:
Hello St. Lawrence Community! I have a request for you to look at and see if you might be able to assist one of our St. Lawrence School teachers with a request for the upcoming school year. Tim or Mr. Pingel as he is known, has been a pleasant add to our school and has become one of the students favorite teachers. If anyone is able to assist, please contact Tim directly or me at the parish office.
“My name is Tim Pingel and I will be a second year teacher at St. Lawrence Elementary and Middle School. I am currently halfway through a 2 year teaching program earning my Masters in Education at the University of Notre Dame under the ACE (Alliance for Catholic Education) program which specializes in forming teachers for Catholic Education. As a student in this program, I am not payed a regular salary for my work at St. Lawrence as I receive a stipend for food and utilities and am provided housing with four other ACE teachers as a community. My current predicament is my lack of a car to get to work next school as I am unable to buy one without a regular paycheck and my house mates work at schools in the opposite side of the diocese. I am looking to use a car for next school year whether that be through a loan/gift or sold for cheap. If you are able to help, please email me at [email protected]”
Please call ahead for Pre-Needs or At-Need Arrangements

Sweet Summer Learning at SLEMS By: Kelly Flores
SLEMS has been filled with fun and learning all summer long! The classrooms have been vibrant, filled with colorful student work and descriptive essays, and the blacktops bouncing with physical education. Students entering 4th grade in Fall, have been spending their summer in a very sweet way. Led by teacher Miss Jacowitz, the class has been reading “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl, in a group setting. This timeless piece has been a fun adventure for the students, allowing a world of imagination and creativity to enhance their classroom. Student, Kyle Yumul said “The best part about this story is hearing the cool ideas! There is a chocolate fountain and a Candy forest!” The class will be ending their story excursion with a movie watch party at the end of Summer School next week.
