From the Pastor --

Come, O long expected Jesus, Born your people to deliver,

Born to set your people free; Born a child, and yet a king;

From our fears and sins release us; Born to reign in us forever,

Christ, in you our rest shall be. Now your gracious kingdom bring.

Israel’s strength and consolation, By your own eternal Spirit

Hope to all the earth impart; Rule in all our hearts alone;

Dear desire of ev’ry nation, By your all sufficient merit

Enter ev’ry longing heart. Raise us to your glorious throne.

(Come, O Long Expected Jesus - Advent Hymn)

The Christmas lights are already up in Whitestone Village and throughout the city; stores offer

Christmas sales amid stores decorated for the “Holiday Season”’ Christmas music can be heard on the radio;

gifts are being bought; Christmas Cards written - and some already mailed and all before Thanksgiving.

So...what happened to Advent? The joyful Season of Advent begins on Sunday, November 29. This

season of gladness is meant to open hearts and minds to the Lord Jesus. As we remember in profound

gratitude the birth of our savior in Bethlehem of the Virgin Mary, Advent reminds us to prepare to receive

the Lord when He comes again in glory and majesty - at a time unknown to establishment the fullness of

God’s kingdom. Advent also challenges us to be ready to open the door of our hearts to Jesus as He comes

to us NOW!

And so back to the hectic pace of the weeks before Christmas. Rather than spend time condemning,

why not try to do all that we do in prayer - as a way to open hearts to the presence of the Lord who comes in

love. Advent/Christmas is a beautiful and joyful time. Let us not allow the “things” we must do stress us

and burden us. Do them as a gift to honor the birthday of Christ the Lord.

Next Sunday - November 22nd - is the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King! As a new

liturgical year begins, let our prayer be for a year of blessings - especially the blessing of peace and good

health.

Remember the Reason for the Season …..Jesus.

God bless.

Let us pray for one another,

GIFTS FROM BETHLEHEM

Olivewood Handcrafted from the Holy Land

A Traditional Art and Livelihood for Holy Land Christians

The handicrafts trade evolved as a cultural tradition of Christians in the Holy Land for

centuries. This indigenous form of art has since become an industry of great importance to

the local people of the Holy Land who rely on it for livelihood, and to Christian pilgrims from

all around the world whose holy pilgrimage can be memorialized for a lifetime in cherished

olive wood or mother of pearl souvenirs. The olive wood carving market is the major source

of income in the Bethlehem area. More than 65 percent of the income of the community in

Bethlehem comes from this work.

In recent years, however, the holy crafts trade has suffered many hardships due to

social and economic pressures. Because of a sharp fall in tourism and also as a result of

diminishing numbers of craftsmen who leave their traditional trade and emigrate due to the

difficult conditions in their homeland, the Holy Land handicraft market is facing serious

danger, and so is the Christian community in the Land.

On the weekend of November 28 & 29 our parish will host an Olivewood Carving

Event by Gifts from Bethlehem. The sale of articles will take place after all the Masses in

the Pastoral Center. Please stop by and support the Christian Community in the Holy

Land.

YOUTH GROUP MINISTRY

This past Saturday, November 7, nine from our St. Luke Youth Group along with

Youth Group Leaders, parents and Fr. Peter went and experienced an amazing and uplifting

trip to the Missionary Sisters of Charity Soup Kitchen located in the Bronx. By the direction

of Sr. Christina, who was so welcoming and helped the youngsters to have a great experience.

The Youth Group was put into full action to see actual hands on how a soup kitchen operates

and how it serves those most in need. As the saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand

words”. You can see by the pictures how our wonderful youth spent the day at the soup

kitchen. After it was all done we ended our day in the sisters’ chapel praying with them and

giving thanks to God for blessing us with such an amazing experience of His love for us and

others. I thank the youth that were present and the leaders and parents for

saying Yes to the call of serving those most in need.

Join-

ing

Math

and

Tech-

nology in 4th Grade

The fifth grade hasn’t been the only class enjoying the new

Chromebooks (thank you once again to our very generous

donors!); the 4th grade has been able to use these new

additions in their Math classes. Using a website called

Socrative (www.socrative.com) we have been able to create

online quizzes for the students to test their Math skills. The

students can see their results on the interactive whiteboard as

soon as they answer a question, and are able to see the

percentage of correct answers. This helps both the students

and the teacher!

While it may sound as if the students are simply taking

a traditional quiz (only on the computer), it soon became a

game to the 4th grade. They cheered each other on as they

watched their friends’ names pop up after they answered the

question. They made sure that their work was done quickly

but accurately so that they could get the correct answer. The

students questioned why an answer they received was wrong

and pressed for an explanation so that they could get it right

next time.

Math class with the Chromebooks has become

a fun, interactive class where the students are

able to challenge themselves and find a love for

Mathematics that they didn’t know they had.

Is Following In Pope Francis’ Footsteps

“The Lord was able to invite others to be

attentive to the beauty that there is in the world

because he himself was in constant touch with nature,

lending it an attention full of fondness and wonder.”

– Pope Francis

Inspired by Pope Francis, Saint Luke School spent the day before Halloween very differently than you

would imagine. Yes, of course we celebrated with candy, goodies, and maybe a few dances to the Monster

Mash. But, our day’s mission was specifically focused on helping those in need. On Friday, October 30th, 8th

Grade teacher Mrs. Volpe, organized for our students to have a “SAVE THE PAWS” two-dollar dress down

day. Students were asked to wear either a pink or gray shirt. Why pink and gray you might ask?

Pink and gray symbolized the colors of Second Chance Rescue’s logo. Second Chance Rescue was

formed in 2009 on the belief that all animals deserve to be loved and cared for. This rescue is a 100% non-

profit organization that rescues dogs and cats from the streets and “death row” in New York City. Most of the

animals rescued are stray, have been abandoned, abused or neglected, or have serious medical issues and re-

quire immediate emergency veterinary care.

Thanks to some help from our very own Nursery teacher Mrs. O’Neill, who is the Vice President of

Second Chance Rescue, our students were able to raise over $1,600! All the proceeds, including Second

Chance t-shirt sales, went to the rescue to help save these precious animals! Saint Luke School will continue

to follow in Pope Francis’ footsteps as we shortly begin our Church’s holy year of mercy on December 8th.

St. Luke School’s Junior High students represent Mrs. Volpe’s 8th grade girls recreated Second Chance’s logo!

Second Chance with their brand new t-shirts!

Since SECOND CHANCE does not have a physical shelter, most of their rescues are place in loving foster

homes or private boarding facilities as they wait their forever homes. If anyone is interested in fostering or

adopting a dog or cat or would like more information, please contact the rescue at:
