His way with words made not only for beautiful music, but solid Biblical teaching. “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing” has been the first hymn at the beginning of each Methodist Hymnal since 1780. It is a familiar and rousing tune, but what about some of those ideas expressed? Verse four begins, “He (Jesus) breaks the power of canceled sin, He sets the prisoner free..” Does that make sense? If sin has been “canceled” by Christ, then how can it have any power over us? Hmmm. Is Charles Wesley just some out-of-touch old man in need of enlightenment? No. Brother Charles Wesley writes a song that says more about the power of God in one line, than a whole stack of “self help” books. When Christ comes into our hearts, He frees us from our sins, He “cancels” them. Even though our redemption is complete, Jesus does not remove our sins from our memories. Even though the Lord has forgiven us and “remembers our sin no more” (Heb. 8:12), we still remember the history of sin in our lives. And when we dwell on the sins of our past, we can get caught up in guilt over our past. By dwelling too much on the past, we can give our canceled sin power to hinder our Christian walk. When Charles Wesley writes that Jesus “Breaks the power of canceled sin,” he reminds us of God’s grace. The sins and mistakes of the past remain part of our memories, not so we can feel unworthy and guilty, but so we might see how much God loves us. We need our past history, so we can recognize what the Lord has done in our lives. Christ has not come to change our history, He has come to change our hearts! Let us continue in our life together as members of Saint Luke UMC, so that we can experience freedom in Christ and tell the world about what the Lord has done for us! “He breaks the power of canceled sin, He sets the prisoner free; His blood can make the foulest clean; His blood availed for me.” Love to all, - Billy

Breaking the Power

Ever read a King James Bible, or some other “Old English”

text and get confused by unfamiliar expressions? Our

language is always changing. The expressions of one

generation doesn’t always mean the same thing to the next

generation. Charles Wesley, brother of John Wesley

(founder of the Methodist movement), authored many of

the now traditional hymns in our Hymnal. His way with

words made not only for beautiful music, but solid Biblical

teaching.

“O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing” has been the first hymn at the beginning of each Methodist

Hymnal since 1780. It is a familiar and rousing tune, but what about some of those ideas expressed?

Verse four begins, “He (Jesus) breaks the power of canceled sin, He sets the prisoner free..” Does

that make sense? If sin has been “canceled” by Christ, then how can it have any power over us?

Hmmm. Is Charles Wesley just some out-of-touch old man in need of enlightenment? No. Brother

Charles Wesley writes a song that says more about the power of God in one line, than a whole stack

of “self help” books. When Christ comes into our hearts, He frees us from our sins, He “cancels”

them. Even though our redemption is complete, Jesus does not remove our sins from our

memories. Even though the Lord has forgiven us and “remembers our sin no more” (Heb. 8:12), we

still remember the history of sin in our lives. And when we dwell on the sins of our past, we can get

caught up in guilt over our past. By dwelling too much on the past, we can give our canceled sin

power to hinder our Christian walk.

When Charles Wesley writes that Jesus “Breaks the power of canceled sin,” he reminds us of God’s

grace. The sins and mistakes of the past remain part of our memories, not so we can feel unworthy

and guilty, but so we might see how much God loves us. We need our past history, so we can

recognize what the Lord has done in our lives. Christ has not come to change our history, He has

come to change our hearts! Let us continue in our life together as members of Saint Luke UMC, so

that we can experience freedom in Christ and tell the world about what the Lord has done for us!

“He breaks the power of canceled sin, He sets the prisoner free; His blood can make the foulest

clean; His blood availed for me.”

Love to all,

YOUTH NEWS

Kairos Placemats

Come and hear; all you who fear God; let me tell you what He has

done for me!

The youth designed placemats for the upcoming Kairos weekend, which is an Emmaus weekend held in a nearby prison. Inmates will be able to eat home cooked meals served on placemats with beautiful designs by our youth and children’s’ ministry. Each mat was carefully prepared and prayed for. What would your mat say? Sunday night youth attended the movie I Can Only Imagine. It was a wonderful testimony of the lead singer of the music group Mercy Me. What a God story! We encourage every one to see it!

Coming soon: Senior Sunday and potluck: June 3rd

Children’s Ministries since September 2015

and her last Sunday with us is April 29. Leah

will be relocating to Ft. Mead, Maryland

where Will, who is in the U.S. Army, will be

stationed.
