Experiencing the Kingdom of God through Prayer

Two months ago I was in Israel, on my first pilgrimage to the Holy Lands. The second week of the trip we journeyed from Jerusalem to the north, to the Sea of Galilee. This is the place where Jesus spent so much time praying, healing, and preaching the Kingdom of God. Not long ago the Legionaries of Christ, hoping to establish a hospitality center for pilgrims on the Sea of Galilee, purchased land in Magdala on the shore of the Sea. As they prepared to build, they unearthed the only ruins we have of a first century synagogue. Magdala's famous Biblical character, Mary Magdelene, had been delivered from seven demons by Jesus, and so became a disciple because of her experience of His love. Her heart had been touched, was open and she became teachable.

What a joy to have been in the very spot where Jesus most assuredly would have taught, reading from the Torah! I could picture myself receiving His words about the Kingdom of God. What is your experience of the Kingdom of God? A primary way we experience God's kingdom is through prayer. Prayer—conversation with God—is a very simple thing. Talk to Jesus. Listen for Him. It can also involve devotional activities, such as praying a family rosary. Or lectio divina, in which we use our spiritual imaginations to enter into a Biblical scene, imagining ourselves as part of the crowd. As I practice lectio divina, I now have visual references from my pilgrimage. I can imagine Jesus preaching at the synagogue in Magdala, imagine what it would have been like to talk with Mary Magdelene after her healing and deliverance. And I can wonder what it would be like to have Jesus touch my being in a similar way.

If we want to know the Kingdom of God--which is a kingdom that grows from within--we pray. I often share that I first learned about prayer at home, through the example of my parents. To spend time in daily prayer means to embody our faith in a visible way. Our posture in prayer—the involvement of our whole body—not only unites our body and soul, but becomes a visible sign of God's grace, our faith. Whether we kneel, stand or sit to pray, we become witnesses of God’s love. Not that we pray to be seen, but in truth others will know. We have an experience of the King-dom of God, and we live as witnesses of His love. God’s kingdom grows from within as we pray. Fr. Tim ______________________________________________________

The Basic Teachings of the Catholic Faith program offers a general introduction to the theological principles found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. While some of the courses are primarily for catechists, they are general enough to offer content useful to any Catholic adults who wish to deepen their understanding of the Church’s teachings and in so doing, become better equipped for Christian discipleship and evangelization. Each of the five segments offers 6 Diocesan clock hours of instruction. $50 for all five classes. FREE for Saint Mary Cathedral parishioners who serve, or seek to serve, in Faith Formation ministry. Call the CFF office at 512-476-6182 for more information.

Padre Tim

The Peter’s Pence Collection is taken up next

Sunday, worldwide to support the most disadvantaged – victims of war, oppression, natural disasters and others in need of emergency assistance. Pope Francis has asked us to “care for those who are in need of attention, understand-ing and help, to bring them the warm closeness of God’s love through tangible actions of sensitivity, of sincere af-fection and of love.” The Holy Father uses the Peter’s Pence Collection to strengthen dioceses, religious orders and struggling communities of faith when they need it most.

St. Irenaeus was born in Asia Minor--now Turkey-- and was tutored in Christianity by St. Polycarp, himself a disciple of St. John the Evangelist. Irenaeus caught the missionary zeal and became a priest sent to Gaul (modern day France). Following a persecution by the pagan Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, Irenaeus replaced the mar-tyred bishop in the region. His trials were not over, however. The heretical sect of Gnosticism spread to Gaul. Gnostics proclaimed a secret, spiritual knowledge available only to a few. Irenaeus researched the Gnostic texts and exposed the falsehoods they taught, such as denying the divinity of Christ. His book, Against Heresies, is still being published today, over 1800 years after his death. May St. Irenaeus intercede for our own quests for greater understanding!

Everyday Stewardship: What power lies in a name?...

Elizabeth took great care to name her son John as God commanded, even if other family members did not under-stand why such a unique name not found in their lineage. It was a unique name for a child who had a unique future of preparing the way for the Messiah. We have our baptismal names, our surnames, our Confirmation names, and our maiden names. But all disciples of Jesus also bear the same name: Christian. People may wonder what does a David, Holly, or Jack really look like, but they should never wonder what a Christian looks like. Unfortunately, too often those who bear this name don't resemble the characteristics embodied in the name. Simply, a Christian looks like Christ. A Christian acts like Christ. A Christian truly is Christ to a world that seeks to uncover the true meaning of his name. --Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

And, as my brothers, the United States Bishops, have reminded us, all are called to be vigilant, precisely as good citizens, to preserve and defend that freedom from everything that would threaten or compromise it.” —Pope Francis
