I want to share with you Cardinal O’Malley’s Letter from the U.S. Catholic Bishops as we enter into this special time of prayer and advocacy for life.

“Pope Francis has captivated the world with his humility, warmth and compassion for each person. Vivid accounts of his tenderness for “the least of these”—the elderly, the imprisoned, those with disfiguring disabilities, the unborn, and many more—seize our attention. Why?

At the heart of each of these interactions is a truth which resonates in our hearts, revealing to us something essential to understanding ourselves and our purpose: We are loved.

In his 2013 Day for Life Greeting, Pope Francis conveyed that ‘even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor, are masterpieces of God’s creation, made in his own image, destined to live forever, and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect.’ We see Pope Francis living out the truth of these words in his actions.

We want to be part of a society that makes affirmation and protection of human rights its primary objective and its boast. Yet to women faced with an unexpected pregnancy, abortion is often presented as their only ‘choice.’ A large percentage of children pre-diagnosed as having Down syndrome are never given the chance to live outside their mothers’ wombs. Elderly members of our families fear they will become burdensome and seek physician-assisted suicide. We see these and many more of our brothers and sisters pushed to the periphery.

These tragedies go directly against respect for life, and they represent a direct threat to the entire culture of hu-man rights. Rather than societies of ‘people living together,’ our cities risk becoming societies of people who are marginalized, uprooted and oppressed.

What can be done to prevent this? We must draw close to Jesus in prayer and in the sacraments. We must ask the Lord for the grace to see ourselves and others as he sees us—as masterpieces of his creation. When God created each of us, he did so with precision and purpose, and he looks on each of us with love that cannot be outdone in intensity or tenderness. We must look at ourselves and at others in light of this truth and treat all people with the reverence and respect which is due.

The Church’s antidote to an individualism which threatens the respect for human dignity is community and sol-idarity. Are we moved by the suffering of those without shelter? Do we seek to alleviate the fear, confusion and panic that women facing unexpected pregnancies may be experiencing? Do our hearts ache for elderly patients in nursing homes who feel abandoned and unwanted, having no one to visit them?

Our mission is to show each person the love of Christ. As uniquely created individuals, we each have unique gifts which we are called to use to share Christ’s love. We are continually given opportunities to do so in our inter-actions with the cashier at the grocery store, our spouses, children, friends and even the people we encounter in traffic. Each of these moments is valuable beyond our realization. We may never know how much a simple gesture of compassion may affect someone’s life.

As the 2014 Respect Life Program begins, let us take a moment to reflect on the theme, “Each of Us is a Master-piece of God’s Creation,” and how this truth affects both our understanding of ourselves and others and the way we live. Pastoral and educational resources of the program can be found at www.usccb.org/respectlife.

Love and justice must motivate each of us to work for a transformation of our own hearts so that we can transform the world around us. This is the message of Pope Francis. May the Risen Lord put the Gospel of joy in our hearts so that we may bear witness to the greatest love story ever told.”

I am away this week at the International Catholic Stewardship Conference and on Saturday giving a talk in Yakima on the Spirituality and Practicality of Stewardship. I deeply appreciate your prayer.

In Christ, I love you,

Throughout his letters to the various communities of faith, St. Paul offers some excellent advice. In today’s

reading from his epistle to the Philippians he urges them to “…have no anxiety at all…the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Of course, we may be familiar with the adage, “eas-ier said than done.”

St. Paul is trying to remind us that if we trust in the Lord, if we turn to the Lord regularly, if we view the Lord as our constant companion and supporter, many of the trials we face and many of the burdens we bear will be easier. Peo-ple who have a consistent and faith-filled prayer life under-stand both what St. Paul is saying and the truth of what he says.

Two important facets of lives of stewardship are prayer and trust. Too often we may become overly self reliant, trying to carry our crosses without the help of the Lord. Develop a prayer life and awareness that Jesus is there to help, every day in every way, and the world can be a much more pos-itive place. As St. Paul tells us in the final verse of today’s second reading if we do all of this “Then the God of peace will be with you.”

Lectio Divina Shared in CommunityIn last week’s bulletin, we discussed the history and method of the ancient art of Lectio Divina. This week we get to the nuts and bolts - a step-by-step process for doing Lectio, either in your family prayer time, or in your small group sessions. All our Councils and Commissions are opening their meetings with Lectio through the end of the Pastoral Year in June 2015. Their Lectio will focus on the upcoming weekend’s Gospel reading. Please consider doing likewise in your ministry gatherings!

(A) Listening for the Gentle Touch of Christ the Word(The Literal Sense)

1. One person reads aloud (twice) the passage of scripture, as others are attentive to some segment that is especially meaningful to them.

2. Silence for 1-2 minutes. Each participant hears and silently focuses on a word or phrase that attracts them in some way.

3. Sharing aloud: Each participant shares a simple word or phrase that attracted them. There is no elaboration or expla-nation - the word or phrase is simply offered to the group.

(B) How Christ the Word speaks to ME(The Allegorical Sense)

4. Third reading of the same passage by another person.

5. Silence for 2-3 minutes. Reflect on “Where does the content of this reading touch my life?”

6. Sharing aloud: Briefly, “I hear, I see...”

(C) What Christ the Word Invites me to DO(The Moral Sense)

7. Fourth reading by still another person.

8. Silence for 2-3 minutes. Reflect on “I believe that God wants me to . . . . . . today/this week.”

9. Sharing aloud: at somewhat greater length the results of each one’s reflection.

One approach is to be especially aware of what is shared by the person to your right. Then, after full sharing, pray for that person. Another approach is simply to offer a brief, silent prayer for each person as they share.

Anyone may “pass” at any time and simply pray silently instead.

EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS

At the beginning of September we held a training session for those who expressed a desire to serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. Not all interested were able to make the date so we will have another - this time on a Saturday.

Saturday, October 18, 10 am—Noon, Downtown Church

If you would like to discern a call to this ministry or simply to know more about it, this meeting is for you. You must be a confirmed Roman Cath-olic. We will discuss what we as Catholics believe about the Eucharist and the how-to’s of the ministry.

This training will give you the ability to serve at both Down-town and Westside churches during Mass.

MASS FOR THE UNBORN

Please join us to pray for un-born children on Saturday, October 11th at 9 am at the Downtown Chucrh. We will pray and have light refresh-ments after Mass. A faith based support group for those who lost an infant or a young child will meet in room 2 from 10 to 11:30 am. Please call Bene for more informa-tion at (360) 292-7143.

WORK FOR JUSTICE

The weekend of Oct. 19 Beyond JustFaith (BJF) ministry is joining thou-sands of churches across the country celebrating Bread for the World Sun-day by conducting a letter writing campaign after the Saturday evening Mass and all of the Sunday morning Masses. This campaign is one of the Bread for the World (BFW) organization’s initiatives encouraging churches and other groups to write letters to their members of Congress. The long-term goal is to end hunger by 2030.

For more information on the “Offering of Letters” go to the BFW web site www.bread.org/help/.

VOCARE IS COMING TO SAINT MICHAEL PARISH

Oct. 7 at 6:30 pm in the Gathering Space. If you have a heart for social teaching and want to transform the cul-ture, this movement is for you. It’s a movement—not a meeting!

VISION: Vocare is an exciting new movement of Cath-olics who wish to joyfully live the social teaching of the Church and there-by create a “civilization of love,” under the guidance of our bishops and in union with the Pope. In response to the “New Evangelization” we enthusiasti-cally answer the call of Jesus to be the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world”, transforming society and cul-ture and calling others to join us. In order to perfect this work of God, we educate ourselves and discern God’s call in light of the principles of Catholic social teach-ing and promote deeply committed spiritual lives. Thus moved and equipped by the Holy Spirit, we seek to unite the people of God and together transform the world.

MISSION: Inspired by Jesus Christ and guided by the teaching of the Catholic Church and natural law; we call, educate and engage Catholics and all people of good will to their God-given mission of evangelizing and trans-forming society and culture.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL COLLECTION NEXT WEEK

The St. Vincent de Paul Society offers three ministries as part of their work.

First, in the business office, Vin-centians meet with neighbors who are in financial straits. They offer what assistance they can to help meet rent or utility bills, or to help pay for medical pre-scriptions.

Second, Pregnancy Aid offers supportive services to preg-nant women and new babies.

Third, the Clothing Bank allows people to shop for clothes for free. All of these ministries are kept pretty busy and need our support.

The weekend of the second Sunday of the month is one opportunity to financially support the work of the St. Vin-cent de Paul Society. A collection is always made after these Masses for the Society. Donations can also be made directly to their office during office hours, 1 -3 pm M-W-F.

Please contact St. Vincent de Paul with questions about all the services they offer and how you can help. The St. Vincent de Paul Society is very grateful to St. Michael’s parishioners for their ongoing, faithful support.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in four adults and one in five children and teens expe-rience a mental health problem every year. One-half of all chronic mental illness begins by the age of 14 and three-quar-ters by age 24. Unfortunately, there are long delays, some-times decades, between the time symptoms first appear and when people finally seek help.

Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) is October 5-11, 2014. It is a time to learn about mental illness such as ma-jor depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. More importantly, MIAW is a time for people from different faith communities to unite in prayer and action to help end the discrimination, indifference and stigma toward people who live with a physical disorder of the brain. Early identification and treatment can make a difference. Recovery is possible. Faith Communities can play a significant role in the healing process by bringing solace and a sense of wholeness. Learn all you can; do all you can. Take action; speak out; advocate.

More information about symptoms and treatment options is available at www.nami.org or contact the Thurston County NAMI Affiliate at (360) 493-6021 or the Washington Recovery 24 Hour Help Line at (866) 789-1511.

For information initiatives to raise awareness about mental illnesses at the parish level, contact Deacon Ronnie San Nicolas at (360) 754-4667.
