PASTOR’S NOTEBOOK – June 1, 2014 – The Ascension of the Lord
Just ONE!
The Easter season is building to the crescendo of Pentecost next Sunday. This past week we had a taste of Pentecost when Bishop Cupich of Spokane celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation on Wednesday evening. We were blessed with folks from the Grey’s Harbor parishes and Fr. Dennis Robb, St. Columban in Yelm and Fr. Paul, Sacred Heart in Lacey and St. Mary’s in Centralia. There were close to 100 in all. I am very grateful to Bishop Cupich for coming all this way so that we might experience a “touch of Pentecost” in our midst. “Just ONE” can make a big difference.
“Just ONE” person can change how we experience life. For those of you who are married, think of your spouse and how when you met them they transformed the horizon of your existence. Or think of a significant teacher or mentor in your life and how they may have changed the direction of your career choice or given you new hope or a sense of self that transformed your heart and your thinking.
“Just ONE.” I feel so blessed because I have had a number of those singular individuals that have transformed my life and enabled me to truly experience THE One, Jesus. Each one, a gift given by God at a certain time in my life to guide and direct me on my journey that I might become the “best version of myself,” to grow in holi-ness, to become what I ultimately hope for – to be a saint.
This coming week, I invite you to reflect on those “just ones” who have touched your life. Pray for them and give thanks to God for them in your life.
Also this week, I ask that you pray about ministry in the parish and how the Holy Spirit is calling you to choose “Just ONE” new (or existing) ministry to be active in during this next year. If you are already involved in minis-try and have found your joy in the ways you currently help build the Kingdom, we rejoice with you and give thanks to God for having called you. Who do you know that might share that joy with you? Who do you know that has the spiritual gifts needed in your ministry? Will you find “Just ONE” other person this year to join you? We will have an opportunity for a renewal of a ministerial involvement or something entirely new for you and for your family on June 28/29, the Feast of St. Peter and Paul. Here is a Pentecost prayer that can help your discernment:
The earth rejoices, it bears its first fruit of glory:
Jesus has risen to the Father!
In joy, the earth brings forth the promise! Calm in its humility,
it draws the light from on high.
Come, Spirit of God! Come engulf the universe in your glory!
You are the heart of all life, the youth that renews everything.
You are the heart of the world, beating in the rhythm of love.
You are the joy and hope that bear us to the Father.
Come, Spirit of God! Come engulf the universe in your glory!
In Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit, I love you,

Gospel Reflection
In today’s Gospel Jesus charges his followers to “make disciples of all nations.” What exactly is going on here? What is this Great Commission anyway? Good stewards know they are directed to share what they exercise stewardship over: their life of faith in Christ Jesus. They know Jesus didn’t direct them to go to church and to keep quiet about it; or to go out into the neighborhood, workplace or marketplace and just be nice. Christ’s Good News is meant to be shared. Many people in our communities don’t know about Jesus Christ. Does that bother us? Do we care? Do we realize we are supposed to do something about it?

We call our scheduled adorers Guardian Adorers. Their holy assignment is to pro-

PARISH HAPPENINGS
WEEK 6. “AS THE FATHER HAS SENT ME, SO I SEND YOU.”
Fr. Jim challenges us this week in his reflection, “You are called to be differ-ent, through the grace and power of the Holy Spirit.” As disciples, we form an ecclesial community, one that is set apart. The Greek root - “ekklesia”, is derived from two words, “ek” and “Kaleo”, which together mean “the called out ones.” We have been called out—set apart—and made new creations in Christ through the working of the Holy Spirit. We are set apart, not for our own ends, but for God’s. How do we live out our discipleship? How are we different from those around us, especially in light of today’s culture? How are we, like the apostles, sent out by Christ?

A REPORT FROM THE FIELD—SOCIAL MINISTRY IN ACTION
He sits in the middle of the room on a folding chair, a solitary figure. So much is going on around him . . . people talk-ing, singing, laughing, a buzz of activity. But he is looking down, unaware, hands in his lap, legs outstretched, turned in on himself. He is an island. He is deaf.
He does not know that others around him are deaf also but engaged in life in a community that gives them education, relationships and hope for the future.
I try to get his attention as others do. We try to get him to look up. We show him the sign for “hello”, a simple touch to the chest then a thumbs-up. But his fingers are not accustomed to this and it means nothing to him . . . yet.
This is the starting point for a young deaf person to be ushered into a wonderful new world. Here at the Deaf Develop-ment Program (DDP) in Phnom Penh we take in deaf students from age 15 years old and up. They have never received any form of education, never had an opportunity to develop a language and never met another deaf person. They do not have the confidence, skills or capacity to develop by themselves. Their problems are further compounded by a lack of understanding of deaf people in society. They are totally reliant on their families yet exist on the fringe of that family and of the community. They have no means of acquiring independence.
The goal here at DDP is to give them the skills to enter into society as an equal and to achieve independence and to be able to contribute to their community.
I see this young man again in about two weeks. He is wearing glasses now and taking in his surroundings and standing more erect. Often a student has other medical or visual prob-lems that no one was aware of before they got here.
Another two weeks go by and we are celebrating Deaf Awareness Day. Now he is wearing some new clothes as well as his new glasses and seems more confident. Even though he mostly sits with one of the teachers, he will occasionally interact with some of the other students. They say it takes about three weeks for a new student to realize that the other students in the class are also deaf. All of their lives they have not known that there was another deaf person in the world.
Today I arrive at work and there he is at the front gate, smiling, looking right at me and giving me a big “hello” sign as others crowd around him. He has friends now. He is no longer an island but in the mainstream of life. My heart soars for him.

ST. MICHAEL PARISH SCHOOL
COVERED PLAY AREA GROUND-BREAKING
There will be a ground-breaking ceremony for the new covered play area on June 13 at 11:45 am at the front entrance
of the school. Come join city officials, the Knights of Columbus, and other honored guests at this ceremony to kick off
the start of this wonderful addition to our campus. The play area has been in the planning stages and funds have been
set aside for several years in anticipation of its construction. It’ll be an asset that benefits the entire Parish!
Dear Parishioners,
Our 5th grade class recently delivered a talented and entertaining rendition of Shakespeare’s As You Like It. This won-
derful tradition represents the depth of our school’s commitment to the arts and the ability of our faculty to set high,
yet attainable, standards for our students. I was so proud of our students and grateful for the dedicated work of our
teachers and parents. It certainly takes a whole community-wide effort to produce such a professional perfor-
mance. Way to go 5th graders!
With the end of the year in sight, our faculty and staff are focused on inspiring the best work from our students as they
conduct closing projects and assessments. Fr. Jim and I spoke to the students at a recent MMO (Monday Morning
Opening) and encouraged them to view the school year as a long distance race where everyone must save their best
for last. Indeed, we want all of our students to end the year on a positive note and to feel they are doing their best
work to close out this great school year. I am encouraging all parents to work closely with their children at home to
foster this sense of discipline and focus despite the beautiful sunshine and their summer dreams. The finish line is in
view, but we’re not there yet!
We are holding a special open house for parents interested in learning more about our Kindergarten and 3rd grade
classes next Wednesday, June 4th from 5-7 pm. If you are planning for your child to attend Kindergarten or 3rd grade
at another school next year, I invite you to come learn about the gift of a Catholic education for your child right here at
St. Michael. Please join us at the school to meet our teachers, see our classrooms, and learn how a Catholic education
at your parish school will benefit your child’s spiritual, intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and aesthetic develop-
ment. I hope that you can join us!
Blessings,
Connor Geraghty
