LIVING JUSTLY “You give that back right now!” How many of us have
heard that line, probably more than once, as we were
growing up? We come home with the trophy of what we
thought was a really sweet deal, only to have our parents
undo our profits by making us return the spoils. They had
a different idea of what constituted a “fair trade agreement.” Justice in our dealings with others continues
to be an important measure of our character, and like a
good parent, God cares very much about how we treat
each other and about how others treat us. God hears the
cry of the poor, and answers the call of the oppressed.

VIVIR EN JUSTICIA “¡Devuélvelo ahora mismo!” ¿Cuántas veces hemos escuchado esa frase, probablemente más de una vez, cuando éramos niños? Llegamos a casa con el trofeo que consideramos un dulce hallazgo, para que nuestros padres deshicieran nuestras ganancias haciéndonos devolver el botín. Ellos tenían un concepto muy diferente de lo que constituye un acuerdo “de intercambio justo”. La justicia en nuestros tratos con otros constituye una importante medida de nuestro carácter, como un buen padre de familia, a Dios le importa mucho cómo nos tratamos los unos a los otros y cómo los otros nos tratan a nosotros. In effect, the visible sign a Christian can show in order to witness to his love for God to the world and to others, to his family, is the love he bears for his brothers. The Commandment to love God and neighbor is the first, not because it is at the top of the list of Commandments. Jesus does not place it at the pinnacle but at the center, because it is from the heart that everything must go out and to which everything must return and refer. In the Old Testament, the requirement to be holy, in the image of God who is holy, included the duty to care for the most vulnerable people, such as the stranger, the orphan and the widow (cf. Ex 22:20-26). Jesus brings this Covenant law to fulfilment; He who unites in himself, in his flesh, divinity and humanity, a single mystery of love. Now, in the light of this Word of Jesus, love is the measure of faith, and faith is the soul of love. We can no longer sepa-rate a religious life, a pious life, from service to brothers and sisters, to the real brothers and sisters that we encoun-ter. We can no longer divide prayer, the encounter with God in the Sacraments, from listening to the other, closeness to his life, especially to his wounds. Remember this: love is the measure of faith. How much do you love? Each one answer silently. How is your faith? My faith is as I love. And faith is the soul of love. In the middle of the dense forest of rules and regulations — to the legalisms of past and present — Jesus makes an opening through which one can catch a glimpse of two faces: the face of the Father and the face of the brother. He does not give us two formulas or two precepts: there are no precepts nor formulas. He gives us two faces, actually only one real face, that of God reflected in many faces, because in the face of each brother, especially of the smallest, the most fragile, the defenseless and needy, there is God’s own image. And we must ask ourselves: when we meet one of these brothers, are we able to recog-nize the face of God in him? Are we able to do this?

En efecto, el signo visible que el cristiano puede mostrar para testimoniar al mundo y a los demás, a su familia, el amor de Dios es el amor a los hermanos. El mandamiento del amor a Dios y al prójimo es el primero no porque está en la cima de la lista de los mandamientos. Jesús no lo puso en el vértice, sino en el centro, porque es el corazón desde el cual todo debe partir y al cual todo debe regresar y hacer referencia. Ya en el Antiguo Testamento la exigencia de ser santos, a imagen de Dios que es santo, comprendía también el deber de hacerse cargo de las perso-nas más débiles, como el extranjero, el huérfano, la viuda (cf. Ex 22, 20-26). Jesús conduce hacia su realización esta ley de alianza, Él que une en sí mismo, en su carne, la divinidad y la humanidad, en un único misterio de amor. Ahora, a la luz de esta palabra de Jesús, el amor es la medida de la fe, y la fe es el alma del amor. Ya no podemos separar la vida religiosa, la vida de piedad del servicio a los hermanos, a aquellos hermanos concretos que encontramos. No podemos ya dividir la oración, el encuentro con Dios en los Sacramentos, de la escucha del otro, de la proximidad a su vida, especialmente a sus heridas. Recordad esto: el amor es la medida de la fe. ¿Cuánto amas tú? Y cada uno se da la respuesta. ¿Cómo es tu fe? Mi fe es como yo amo. Y la fe es el alma del amor. En medio de la tupida selva de preceptos y prescripciones —a los legalismos de ayer y de hoy— Jesús abre una brecha que permite distinguir dos rostros: el rostro del Padre y el del hermano. No nos entrega dos fórmulas o dos preceptos: no son preceptos y fórmulas; nos entrega dos rostros, es más, un solo rostro, el de Dios que se refleja en muchos rostros, porque en el rostro de cada hermano, especialmente en el más pequeño, frágil, indefenso y necesitado, está presente la imagen misma de Dios. Y deberíamos preguntar-nos, cuando encontramos a uno de estos hermanos, si somos capaces de recono-cer en él el rostro de Dios: ¿somos capaces de hacer esto?

*While nothing can replace the special union and graces obtained when attending Mass in person and receiving Communion, the Diocese of Dallas decreed that the faithful will remain dispensed from any obligation to attend Mass on Sunday because of the restricted attendance and/or health concerns.
