Today’s SermonThree P’s of FatherhoodPreacher: The Rector

Happy Fathers Day! When I say fathers I mean our biological fathers as well as all father figures and mentors. For there is one thing all have in common: In the spirit of Proverbs 4, the fatherly call to live the three P’s. As we think of the CoronaVirus and the three P’s of the Payroll Protection Plan that bailed out many small businesses and non-profits, the three P’s being preached on today are capable of helping families bail out of conflict and into peace for generations to come! Stay tuned.

Welcome to St. Michael’sIn a nutshell...• Bishop Mark Lawrence has issued guidelines for Sunday worship in all churches of the diocese. St Michael’s has implemented these guidelines.

Service adapted from the Anglican Church of North America Prayer Book beginning on page 105.

Processional Hymn, all standing Holy, Holy, Holy Hymn 362

1. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee; Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three Persons, blessed Trinity.

2. Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, Which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

3. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, Though the sinful human eye thy glory may not see, Only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, Perfect in power, in love, and purity.

4. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy Name, in earth and sky and sea; Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three Persons, blessed Trinity.

(Standing)Officiant Blessed be God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

Collect for Purity, standing, in unison Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Summary of the Law

Officiant Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ says: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with

all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.

The liturgy begins with the Acclamation, which is an “eager expression” of praise.

Song of Praise, standing Faith of our Fathers Hymn 558

1. Faith of our fathers! living still in spite of dungeon, fire and sword: O how our hearts beat high with joy, whene’er we hear that glorious word: Faith of our fathers, holy faith! We will be true to thee till death.

3. Faith of our fathers! we will love both friend and foe in all our strife: And preach thee, too, as love knows how, by kindly deeds and virtuous life. Faith of our fathers, holy faith! We will be true to thee till death. This is My Father’s World Hymn 651

1. This is my Father’s world, and to my listening ears All nature sings and round me rings the music of the spheres. This is my Father’s world: I rest me in the thought Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas, his hand the wonders wrought.

3. This is my Father’s world He shines in all that’s fair In rustling grass I hear him pass He speaks to me everywhere. This is my Father’s world and to my listening ears All nature sings and round me rings the music of the spheres.

Officiant: The Lord be with you.People: And with your spirit.Officiant: Let us pray.

Collect of the Day

O God, you made us in your own image, and you have redeemed us through your Son Jesus Christ: Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Lesson: Proverbs 4:1-4, 20-23, (seated) After the Reading, the Reader says The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.

The Scriptures teach that much of our spiritual renewal is by the washing of the Word of God, which cleanses our minds and purifies our hearts.

Song, standing O, How I Love Jesus

l. There is a name I love to hear, I love to sing its worth; It sounds like music in my ear, the sweetest name on earth.

Refrain: O how I love Jesus, O how I love Jesus, O how I love Jesus, Because he first loved me!

2. It tells me of a Savior’s love, who died to set me free; It tells me of his precious bloods, the sinner’s perfect plea. Refrain

3. It tells of one whose loving heart can feel my deepest woe; Who in each sorrow bears a part that none can bear below. Refrain

The Gospel, standingPriest The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John 4:7-14 People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

After the Gospel, the Reader says The Gospel of the Lord.People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Sermon Three P’s of FatherhoodThe Rector

Hymn of Response, standing How Firm a Foundation Hymn 637

1. How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, Is laid for your faith in his excellent word! What more can he say than to you he hath said, To you that for refuge to Jesus have fled?

2. “Fear not, I am with thee; O be not dismayed! For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid; I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.

4. “When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply; The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design Thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.

5. “The soul that to Jesus hath fled for repose, I will not, I will not desert to its foes; That soul, though all hell shall endeavor to shake, I’ll never, no, never, no, never forsake.”

The word Gospel comes from an old German word which means “Good News,” the great good news about Jesus the Messiah. We stand for the Gospel reading to show the importance we place on Jesus’ words and actions.

Apostles’ Creed Officiant and People together, all standing

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Officiant The Lord be with you.People And with your Spirit.Officiant Let us pray.

Prayers of the People, kneeling

Come, Holy Spirit, ComeBurn, Cleanse, and Renew for the beauty of your creation

Breathe reconciliation, harmony, and gentlenessUpon our City, State, and Nation

Break any plans of Satan and his demonsSo that we may walk as one with Jesus

Write on our hearts the words of Psalm 127That unless the Lord builds and watches over our homes, all is in vain

For the miracles of the Bible where Jesus healed. We pray for the same healing for those affected by the Coronavirus. We pray for the curve to be flattened and for the health of our nation to be renewed.

Let us sing about the mystery of creation, incarnation, and salvation Songs that remind us of God’s reckless and infinite love

We sinners beg that you hear us, almighty God: That you will break any barriers tha thave been erected through civil unrest and dismantle any racial injustice. Please act upon this prayer, good Lord.

To send forth laborers into your harvest; to prosper their work by your Holy Spirit; and to make your saving health known to our nation, the United Sates of AmericaWe beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

That it may please you to rule the hearts of your servants, especially Donald our President, Henry our Governor, and John our Mayor, and all others in authority, that they may do justice, and show mercy, and walk humbly before you. And bring into the way of truth all who exercise earthly authority, especially those who have erred and strayed and been deceived like lost sheep. We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

The Apostles’ Creed: This is the basic and essential structure of the Christian faith. Every word is packed with meaning. Once the Gospel is given this is the response made by the community who have chosen to trust the truth of what God has revealed about Himself through His Son in the power of His Holy Spirit. Catholic simply means universal, not necessarily the Roman Catholic Church.

About The Prayers: If God knows everything what’s the point of prayer? Clearly prayer is not about “informing God” of anything. In short, prayer is a way of saying “yes, Lord, I want to develop a relationship with you, receive your life, share my life.”

About the “posture” of prayer: It has been commonly said that Anglicans kneel for prayer, but that is not the rule for posture in any edition of the Prayer Book. Various editions have assumed that standing is the normal posture for public prayer and have directed the people to kneel only for confessions, for reciting the Commandments, etc.. However, in this parish it is the traditional discipline to kneel for the prayers contained in the services of Morning and Evening Prayer. It is a posture of humility, which is something always worth cultivating in us.

- 7 - Transforming Hearts Through Jesus Christ

To bless and guide all judges, giving them grace to execute justice, and to maintain truth, especially when faced with choosing the harder right over the easier wrong. We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

To bless and keep our armed forces by sea, and land, and air, and to shield them in all dangers and adversities, especially all men and women who serve as your angels of service in law enforcement and health care.We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

To make wars to cease in all the world; to give to all nations a genuine practice of unity, peace, and concord; and to bestow freedom upon all peoples whom you have given the breathe of life. We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

To encourage us to stand--on the streets of our city--with the lonely, marginalized, abused, and forgotten; to bind us together in action and prayer; and to lead us as one with your clarity, vision, and wisdom. We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

To forgive our enemies, persecutors, and slanderers, and to turn their hearts to repentance, conversion, love, and a new life in Christ. We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

Gracious Father, we thank you for our brothers and sisters at Mother Emanuel. We thank you for the witness they have been, before a watching world, of your forgiveness and reconciling love. On this day of remembrance, we ask you to pour out your Holy Spirit upon our city, that there might be continued healing, renewal, and peace. And in all things may we together find our hope in the Good News and outstretched arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

To strengthen those who have asked for prayers of healing (sick list). And to strengthen those who have asked for prayers to stand; to encourage the faint-hearted; to raise up those who fall; and finally to beat down Satan under our feet, especially as we walk the streets of Charleston, proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ--and proclaiming our peace with Him that ensures a peace with ourselves and with each other. We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

To celebrate the life of all Dads on this Father’s Day, and so connect their wills to the will of their Father in heaven, so that families would be united under the banner of Jesus Christ. We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

To grant to all the faithful departed eternal life and peace, especially your servant Peter Moore. We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

Son of God, we beseech you to hear us, as we lift up Peter Moore’s family and ask that you embrace them with the love of your Holy Spirit.Son of God, we beseech you to hear us.

Lord, have mercy upon us.Christ, have mercy upon us.Lord, have mercy upon us.

The Lord’s Prayer, kneeling, pray together Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

ConfessionOfficiant Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God.(Silence to reflect on those you have hurt or those who have hurt you.)

Officiant and people, (seated or kneeling) Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker and judge of us all: We acknowledge and lament our many sins and offenses, which we have committed by thought, word, and deed against your divine majesty, provoking most justly your righteous anger against us. We are deeply sorry for these our transgressions; the burden of them is more than we can bear. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for your Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may evermore serve and please you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The AbsolutionOfficiant Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has

promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Comfortable Words

Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Matthew 11:28

God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Timothy 1:15

If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:1-2

The Lord’s Prayer: like the Creed this prayer given to us by our Lord is designed to “cover all the bases”. It is the basic and essential structure of a complete prayer life.

In the Confession of Sin and Absolution, our sins, both individual and corporate, have been confessed, and we have been powerfully reassured of God’s complete forgiveness through Jesus Christ. In Morning Prayer we begin with a cleansing admission and confession of sin followed by an authoritative pronouncement of God’s forgiveness in Christ Jesus. This is always “ground zero” for Christians. We move out from here.

Our Fa ther,- which art in heav en,-hal low- ed- be thy Name.

Thy king dom- come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heav en.-

Give us this day our dai ly- bread, and for give- us our debts as we for give- our debt ors.-

And lead us not in to- tem ta- tion,- but de liv- er- us from

e vil.- For thine is the king dom,- and the pow er- and the

glo ry-for ev er.-

Amen.

Closing Hymn A Mighty Fortress is Our God Hymn 688

1. A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing, Our helper he amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing: For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; His craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal.

4. That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours through him who with us sideth: Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still, His kingdom is forever.

The DismissalCelebrant Alleluia! Alleluia! Let us go forth into the world to transform hearts...People through Jesus Christ our Lord. Alleluia! Alleluia!

The Peace is a particularly good time to welcome visitors and newcomers. Please take a moment to extend God’s peace to those around you. That peace, which the world cannot give, comes only through the forgiving of Jesus Christ. This peace is not rooted in our circumstances but in the presence, promise, and power of God and Christ’s redeeming work.

As Morning Prayer ends, we are charged to “go forth,” a challenge to reach out beyond our own church to the world around us.
