Father’s Day PrayerFather’s Day PrayerFather’s Day PrayerFather’s Day Prayer
God our Father, in your wisdom and love you made all things. Bless these men of St. Monica
Parish, that they may be strengthened as Christian fathers. Let the example of their faith, love and
patience shine forth, and grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of
profound respect. We humbly thank you, Lord, for the blessing of our fathers.
Amen

CHURCH ETIQUETTE
The presiding priest should be the last one
entering the church, and the first one to be leaving the
church.
If you are arriving late for Mass, please choose
an appropriate time to enter the church, such as when
everyone is standing, but not during the readings or
prayers. Please know that it is better to be present at
Mass, even if you are a little late, than not to be
present at all.
Please be respectful and courteous when entering
church by turning off ALL cell phones and
beepers. Church is a place of worship and
should be treated with reverence. Thank You.
St. Monica’s is fully handicap accessible.
Dedicated in 1988, St. Monica Church
was the first in the Archdiocese of
Chicago to be fully accessible to people
with disabilities. There are no steps, all
doors have levers instead of knobs, and
the sanctuary is ramped.

FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF CHRIST
The great fifty-day celebration of Easter has concluded, as have the feasts honoring the Holy Trinity and
the Body and Blood of Christ. Last week we began a long stretch of Ordinary Time that will bring us to late
November. Saint Paul tells us today that those who are baptized “have clothed yourselves with Christ” (Galatians
3:27). This scripture is echoed in the Church’s baptism ritual when we sing, “You have put on Christ, in him you
have been baptized.” This message is inspiring and sobering at the same time, for in today’s Gospel, we get to the
heart of what it means to be clothed in Christ. The Lord tells us, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny
himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). For the next twenty-two weeks we are called to take
up the cross and, with Saint Luke as our guide, follow in the footsteps of Christ. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
SAINT JOHN FISHER (1469-1535) AND SAINT THOMAS MORE (1477-1535) June 22
From Robert Bolt’s classic A Man For All Seasons to Showtime’s edgy The Tudors, Thomas More endears
himself still: lawyer-statesman of impeccable integrity, remarried widower and affectionate father delighting in a
lively household—four children, a pet monkey, even a paid jester! And challenges still: humanist-reformer, yet
champion of Catholic faith and papal primacy. John Paul II named him “Patron of Statesmen and Politicians,”
citing More’s generous work, both as a lawyer and in government service, on behalf of the poorest and most
marginalized people of his time, as well as his promotion of education for all sectors of society. More’s decision for
principle over politics, conscience over convenience prompted his final words: “I die the King’s good servant, but
God’s first.” Alone among England’s bishops, John Fisher dared challenge Henry VIII’s divorce and repudiation of
the papacy. When the Pope named the imprisoned Fisher a cardinal, Henry thundered: “Don’t bother sending
Fisher’s red hat here; I’ll send Fisher’s head to Rome!” Whose “good servants” are we first? Isn’t a right conscience
worth the pain of standing alone? —Peter Scagnelli, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
DISCIPLESHIP
Jesus never hung out a recruiting poster. He did not advertise. He did not offer bonuses for joining. He did
not have a toll-free number or a web site. He did, on occasion, give out free meals. His pitch, however, was quite
simple and straightforward: “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily
and follow me.” (Luke 9:23) Every day. Recruiting incentive? Faith—the get-up-and-go kind of faith that Abraham
had, as Paul reminds us in the second reading. Uniform? Paul tells us to clothe ourselves in Christ Jesus, the
uniform of the day, every day. The cross and Christ are inseparable. So equipped, we are ready for anything: life or
death. However, if we are faithful children of God, it’s not really life or death; it’s life with God, now and forever. Copyright © 2003, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
REFLECTION
But what of us? Aren’t we also Jesus’ disciples? Aren’t we one with the Lord in his suffering, death, and
resurrection? It’s relatively safe in our nation to respond, “Yes.” But such is not the case in all nations of the earth.
Likewise, few of us have experienced the religious bigotry most of our ancestors knew. However, there are people in
our world—even in our nation—who do know bigotry, who are the targets of prejudice, who are forced to take up
their crosses every day. Many of these people, the have-nots of our society, have been rejected by the haves,
including some haves who share the same baptism and the same table of the Lord—a living contradiction. The
question, then, is how willing are we to share the burdens of those who suffer, to help them carry their crosses, to
see in their suffering faces the suffering face of the Lord? Copyright © 2003, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Windows into Our Faith The Story of St. Monica Church’s
Stained Glass Windows
Part 7- The Cry Room Windows
By Jennifer Haderspeck
Contributor
The last stop on our artistic journey around St.
Monica Church is the windows inside and near the Cry
Room. These windows are bedecked with all of the
bright colors of the rainbow, including brilliant blues,
radiant reds and luminous yellows. The bright colors
are meant to appeal to the visual senses of the children
of God, who grow in their spiritual worship in our
parish.
The theme of these windows is the wonders of
God’s creation. Easily recognizable figures, such as
angels, flowers, trees, birds, owls, raccoons, rabbits and
squirrels, appeal to the imaginations of children.
For adults, it reminds them of the simple
beauty of nature and God’s hand in creating the
magnificence all around the world.
