From the Pastor’s Desk…
World Mission Sunday 2018 Today is World Mission Sunday. Pope Francis reminds us that “Mission is part of the ‘Grammar’ of
Faith, something essential for those who listen to the voice of the Spirit Who whispers both ‘Come’
and ‘Go forth’. Those who follow Christ cannot fail to be missionaries…”.
In his message for this year’s celebration on October 21st, the Holy Father explains that “life is a
mission”. Every man and woman is a mission; that is the reason for our life on this earth. To live
out joyfully our responsibility for the world is a great challenge. Each one of us is called to reflect on
this fact: “I am a mission on this Earth; that is the reason why I am here in this world” (Evangelii
Gaudium, 273).
On this World Mission Sunday, the Society for the Propagation of the Faith requests financial help
through church collections to support 1,159 young mission dioceses in the world and get out the
message of God’s love, hope, and healing to the poorest communities. With our prayers and gener-
osity, missionaries and evangelizers will have the means needed to continue spreading the Gospel of
Jesus throughout the world.
We, too, are on a Mission!
By virtue of our Baptism, we, too, participate in the mission of Jesus to love God and our neighbors.
This mission was accomplished at a price: God’s own Son, Jesus. The readings this weekend are
about the mystery of Jesus’ passion and death. In the first reading, the Prophet Isaiah presents the
Suffering Servant, who was willing to sacrifice all for others. Jesus is the suffering servant of
Yahweh who suffered for the sins and sacrificed everything for our salvation.
The Gospel narrates how Jesus repeats the message for the third time that whoever wants to share in
His glory must share also in His suffering. Jesus “came not to be served but to serve, and to give His
life for the ransom of many.” That was His mission and we, taking up the same mission, must also
serve by carrying the cross for ourselves and for others.
Jesus corrected his disciples who wanted to “sit one at your right hand and one at your left in your
glory.” God’s kingdom is not of this world; places of honor and power do not matter. As Jesus
had taught and showed His disciples and now us, “… whoever would be first among you must be
slave of all.”
Jesus accepted the mission God gave Him. It was the Father’s will that Jesus suffered and died for
us. That was how Jesus showed His love and ultimate service. We are likewise called to this
mission of love and service. Accepting this mission is the only way to share in the glory of the
Resurrection.
God bless you!
Fr. John Francis
