Pastor’s CornerPastor’s CornerPastor’s Corner Rincón del PastorRincón del PastorRincón del Pastor One of the most famous animation characters in recent memory is the genie in the film Aladdin. That character was voiced by the late great actor Robin Williams. He brought the character to life. Stories of genies can teach us a great deal about what is important in life. Most of us know that if you supposedly rubbed a lamp that contains a genie, then the genie is supposed to grant you three wishes. In most of those stories, once any character be-comes the master of the genie, things usually go wrong. Having anything one wishes for isn’t as easy as it sounds. The master of the lamp may wish for money, but later finds out that the money is cursed. The master may wish for power, but later finds out that the sacrifices made for power drives him or her to madness. It’s very hard to be given anything for which you wish because the wish usu-ally backfires. But there are wishes that do not backfire, and the Scriptures today give us some insight to how we would best avoid calamity if we ever become the master of a magical lamp, or, more likely, find ourselves in daily prayer. In the first reading Solomon gets a gift from God. Solomon can have anything for which he wishes. What an amazing opportunity! He knows that he is responsible for leading his kingdom. Should he ask for great wealth? For a great palace? No, instead he asks for an understanding heart. To help us understand the benefit of a gift that can last and last, in rapid fire rhythm , Matthew’s Gospel has Je-sus sharing a series of quick anecdotes with his disciples. He tells them that the kingdom is like this, like that or this way. In each of these stories a gift is given to the main characters such as a treasure, wealth, success, but no mat-ter what the circumstances of the story, there is always a choice to be made. What happens when you find a great treasure? What happens when you are so successful that your household is blessed with both new and old wines? In the many-faceted characters that Jesus presents, we can see ourselves - a laborer, a merchant, a scribe. All of us have different choices to make within our personal lives or professional occupations. But, what quality can transform any occupation to be nearer to the kingdom of heaven? The wisdom to discern the good from the bad. The wisdom of an understanding heart. The moral of our Scriptures is, in fact, that we do have such a gift. We have the ability to ask God for an under-standing heart to help us have the wisdom to know what to do here and now. What a different world it would be if we had the wisdom to pray for wisdom and worked dili-gently to apply it to our everyday decisions. Only then would all our stories end well. The stories would end like the kingdom of heaven which Jesus was known to pro-claim, and the sequels would be equally magnificent. We are all called to share our wisdom in some form or another with other people. One way is by sharing a love of our faith. The RCIA process - that program by which adults come to learn about our faith and join the Catholic Church - will be starting soon. Have you ever invited someone to consider our faith? Do you know someone who might be interested? Have you ever directed anyone to St. Paschal’s? Now is the time to speak up. Be a great disciple of the Lord. Father Michael Rocha

Padre Michael Rocha

Did You Know?

Adults and children should be familiar with fire extinguishers Every home should have a fire extinguisher, and parents and older children should know how to use it in case of emergency. Small fires can escalate quickly, and there is not always time to wait for the fire department. Parents should familiarize them-selves with the extinguishers in their homes, and teach children where the extinguishers are located and how to operate them safely. Use the PASS trick to help kids remember what to do: Pull the pin, Aim at the fire’s base, Squeeze the han-dle, Sweep from side to side. To request a copy of the VIRTUS article “Fire Extinguisher Tips Everyone Should Know,” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

The Men’s Club would like to take a moment to share, and reflect upon, the very special year it has been over the last 12 months, now that July is here and we transition to a new arch-diocese calendar period. The past year has been filled with fun, exciting, and very successful events - such as the Fall Fest/Car Raffle, Golf Tournament, Super Bowl Party, Lenten Fish Frys, Family Movie Night, Casino Night, Pancake Break-fasts, Member of Honor Dinner, and Conejo Food and Wine event, among others. It was an honor and privilege to serve those in need during the Christmas season with a toy drive and Children's Christmas Party, (benefiting over 600 families), assisting St. Vincent de Paul with food collection (filling their onsite pantry to capacity), and donating food to 180 families during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. With God’s blessings and the incredibly generous support of you, our SPB parishioners, and our countless friends, sponsors, and support-ers of St. Paschal Baylon, the Men’s Club was able to contrib-ute over $139,000 to our parish and school, educational schol-arships, and our outreach program - benefiting over 20 local organizations. Our 2017 Outreach Program consisted of dona-tions made to support boy/girl scouts, hospice care, foster care, food banks, religious education, respect life, convalescent care, youth ministries, and cancer support. Our Men’s Club organi-zation is only able to make these contributions because of your financial support and participation in our events, the countless hours from dedicated parish and school volunteers, the hard work from our membership, and the exceptional support and assistance from Father Michael, the entire parish office team, and school faculty and staff. We are truly blessed to be part of the special community at St. Paschal Baylon and look forward to another great year in 2017-18! P.S. - All men of the parish (18 years and older) are invited to participate in the Men’s Club. Join us in our mission to be “Men of Faith, Serving God’s People”. Please come to our next meeting on Monday, August 7th at 6pm in the Parish Hall. We look forward to seeing you there!

LISTEN TO YOUR DREAMS

God visits Solomon in a dream, and the scripture story nowhere tells us that Solomon awoke to have this conversa-tion with God! So, still in his dream, Solomon answers God’s question about what he desires most, and God grants his request for wisdom in abundance. In our waking hours, we are much distracted by work, home, family, traffic, entertainment, and many worries. When we try to think about what we really want out of life, we have trouble even imagining what that might be. But deep inside, our real longings dwell, known to God and to the Holy Spirit. Our dreams, unencumbered by defenses, may hold clues to what our deepest needs are, or what bothers us most. They could be God speaking. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 30, 2017 All things work for good

for those who love God. — Romans 8:28a

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Solomon prays for an understanding heart (1 Kings 3:5, 7-12).

Psalm — Lord, I love your commands (Psalm 119).

Second Reading — All things work for good for those who love God (Romans 8:28-30).

Gospel — The one who knows of the kingdom of heaven brings new and old from the storeroom (Matthew 13:44-52 [44-46]). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, Interna-tional Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

The achievement of the late 1960s and early 1970s in enriching the “euchology” or “words of thanksgiving” available in the Church’s prayer is important on many levels. Ecumenically, it means that the Latin Rite now reflects the wealth of the East in having more than one prayer available to the Church. Pastorally, it actually acknowledges the place of the assembly in prayer, which is particularly clear in the Masses with Children. In fact, the traditional prayers of the Eastern Church served as models for our new prayers. In the East, what we call the Eucharistic Prayer is called the anaphora, and there are three main families of anaphora. Each family has a different “recipe” for arranging the usual parts of these prayers. All anaphora have “intercessions” included, but the Churches of Antioch place them toward the end of the prayer, Alexandria prefers them at the beginning before the “Holy, Holy,” and Syria puts them at the very end. One branch of the Syrian family is unique in not mentioning the words of Jesus at the Last Supper. The Roman Canon we once prayed exclusively has some connection with the Alexandrian family, but once the signal for creativity was given, all the wealth of every prayer tradition was on the table, and our Sunday Mass has been greatly enriched. —Rev. No pide rique-zas, sino comprensión y sabiduría.
