Page 2 Solemnity of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) Dear Friends in Christ,

Happy Father’s Day! And heartfelt blessings to all the fathers in our parish.

This year Father Day’s coincides with Corpus Christi (Latin for Body of Christ). It is the solemn celebration of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, the expression of our unique Catholic belief that Jesus is truly present in His Body and Blood, and I would add, with His Soul and Divinity, in the Eucharist. In John 6:51-58, Jesus clearly tells His apostles that He is: “… the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” … The Jews quarreled among

themselves, saying, “How can this man give us [his] flesh to eat?” Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats* my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. ...”

We celebrate this mystery daily in the liturgy with solemn emphasis on Sunday, but this solemnity is a day that is set aside so we contemplate and celebrate in a unique manner what we believe about the Eucharist. Fittingly on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi the Church urges us to demonstrate publicly (in procession), our faith and belief in the Real presence. As such after the 11:00AM Mass we will have a procession, with the Lord Jesus in the Blessed Eucharist/Sacrament, from the church through our neighborhood, as an outward expression of our faith in the REAL PRESENCE, while praying for our community. This will conclude with Benediction at the gazebo at Veteran’s Park. Our annual parish picnic will then commence.

I pray that this celebration starting with the Eucharist, continuing with the procession and followed with our parish picnic may continue to foster in us a deeper sense of belief in the real presence of Jesus. Amen

I wish to express my deepest gratitude to Chery Delelio, Cecilia Adams and all the volunteers and donors who made our Vaca-tion Bible School this year a great success. Without everyone’s assistance it would not have been possible. Due to the early print deadline for this bulletin, pictures from VBS will be in next weekend’s bulletin. I’m already looking forward to next year!

As indicated in last weekend’s bulletin, now that we are operating on a summer schedule, the space for this weekly column will be used for brief moments of Church/Faith teachings. This year we focus on the Sacraments.

In Christ,

Fr. Godwin

The Sacraments - Baptism (Part 1)

Christian initiation is accomplished by three sacraments together: Baptism which is the beginning of new life; Confirmation which is its strengthening; and the Eu-

charist which nourishes the disciple with Christ’s Body and Blood for his transformation in Christ. We start our summer series with Baptism.

The sacrament is called Baptism, after the central rite by which it is carried out: to baptize means to “plunge’ or “immerse”; the “plunge” into the water symbolizes burial into Christ’s death, from which one rises up by resurrection with him, as “a new creature.”

According to the Catechism (CCC 1216): Baptism is God’s most beautiful and magnificent gift. … We call it gift, grace, anointing, enlightenment, garment of immortality, bath of rebirth, seal, and most precious gift. It is called gift because it is conferred on those who bring nothing of their own; grace since it is given even to the guilty, Baptism because sin is buried in the water; anointing for it is priestly and royal as are those who are anointed; enlightenment because it radiates lite; cloth-

ing since it veils our shame; bath because it washes; and seal as it is our guard and the sign of God’s Lordship.

Baptism was prefigured in the Old Testament. During the blessing of the baptismal water at the Easter Vigil, the Church recalls the great events in salvation history that prefigured the mystery of Baptism: • Since the beginning of the world, water, has been the source of life and fruitfulness. Sacred Scripture sees it as

“overshadowed” by the Spirit of God. • The Church has seen in Noah’s ark a prefiguring of salvation by Baptism, for by it “a few, that is eight persons, were

saved through water.” • If water springing up from the earth symbolizes life, the water of the sea is a symbol of death and so can represent

the mystery of the cross. By this symbolism Baptism signifies communion with Christ’s death. • But above all, the crossing of the Red Sea, literally the liberation of Israel from the slavery of Egypt, announces the

liberation brought about by Baptism. • Finally, Baptism is prefigured in the crossing of the Jordan River by which the People of God received the gift of the

land promised to Abraham’s descendants, an image of eternal life. The promise of this blessed inheritance is fulfilled in the New Covenant. (CCC 1217-1222)

In December, several team members will again be heading to Nigeria for a Mission Trip. On this upcoming mission trip, 10-12 health screening clinics are scheduled to be held in rural villages. There is a great need for reading glasses. Last year due to your generosity we were able

to provide glasses to about 400 villagers but there are al-ways many more requests for help than glasses available. There is a container in the narthex (on the table by the Kiosks) to collect glasses in preparation for this year’s trip (beginning December 28th). Thank you in advance for

ImaBridge Africa is also asking you to consider recycling your bicy-cle (only usable bikes please).

Bikes will help provide transportation to jobs, school and medical appointments.

Word of Life “God uses creation to bring us into loving relationship with himself, most notably through the sacraments. We experi-ence this most powerfully in the Eucharist, the true body and blood of Christ, received under the appearance of bread and wine, where ‘all that has been created finds its greatest exaltation’ (LS 236).” Serene Attentiveness to God’s Creation USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities www.goo.gl/xdm378

Each year on June 22nd we celebrate the feast days of two notable Catholic saints and martyrs: Saint Thomas More and Saint John Fisher. It’s fitting that these two men have the same feast day, because they were both Eng-lishmen martyred within two weeks of each other, for the same cause (religious freedom), on the same occasion (defending the sanctity of marriage and Papal authority against State usurpation), and at the hands of the same man (King Henry VIII).

In addition to this, they were beatified together (by Pope Leo XIII in 1886) and canonized together (by Pius XI in 1935). Through the centuries they stand together—one a layman and statesman, the other a priest and bishop—as models and heroes of religious freedom against en-croaching government power.

Vocation Corner: The Eucharist and the Call to Love

One of the greatest gifts of the Second Vatican Council was the emphasis on the “Universal Call to Holiness” that stressed the reality that ALL of us are called to be saints, that holiness is not reserved to just a select few! This is crucial to remember when speaking about vocations, be-cause no matter what you are called to, God desires for you to be holy, and your specific calling is the path by which God intends for you to reach sainthood! In other words, no one will ever have a vocation to be a liar, a rob-ber, or a murderer! Rather, we are always being called to do things that will put us in ever deeper union with Christ.

Now, the best way to remain in union with Christ (which is another way of saying that we’re growing in holiness) is to imitate His example. Now, today we are celebrating the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, and the gift of Christ’s presence in the Eucharist. I think that if we want to learn to grow in holiness, that we can do so precisely by meditating on how Christ makes Himself available to us AND to His Father. Each and every vocation - whether it be what you’re called to dedicate your life to, or simply what you’re called to today – every vocation will require that we make ourselves available to God and available to loving and serving others. So ask yourself today if your heart is in the right disposition to answer “Yes” to God’s call by examining your heart to see if it is available for God and for others.

their struggles, the dad lost his job due to exces-sive absences to care for his wife and take her to physi-cian’s appointments. With shut-off notices for gas and wa-ter, no gas for their car and bare cupboards, the family was in desperate need of help. Vincentians visited the family with bags of food, a tank of gas, an empathetic ear and supportive prayers. SVDP also assisted by making past due payments to avoid shutoff of utilities. Thanks to your generosity, this family is back on its feet. Proverbs 22:9 “Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.”

Finance News The Offering Report for the week ending June 11th, will be printed in next weekend’s bulletin. The report was not ready for this week due to an early print submission re-quirement from the publisher. Thank you for your under-standing.

Welcome Homeschooling Families! Veritas Catholic Home Edu-cation Cooperative is a group of Catholic home educating families that team together for faith, fellowship, and weekly classes for students Pre-K

through High School. We host academic and enrichment courses at St. Mary Church in Huntley on Wednesdays, and gather for special events and field trips once a month. Parents remain on campus during class days and volunteer in different ways; teaching is not required.

Online registration for Fall 2017 classes will run from July 3 – Aug. 15. We are currently accepting course proposals from parents wishing to teach until June 14th.

“We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean, but the ocean would be less because of that drop.” Mother Teresa

Saturday July 1st is “Tag Day” for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Generous volunteers have given up some of their holiday week-end to collect donations in front of Ace Hardware, Angelo’s Market, Jewel Food Store, and Riverside Bakery in McHenry. They will also be collecting in front of Angelo’s Market and Walmart in Johnsburg. If

you are greeted by one of these volunteers on Saturday July 1st, will you kindly consider making a donation? In turn we will give you a “tag”, or card explaining what we do, and our phone number in case there’s someone you know who is experiencing hardship. Attached to the tag is a wrapped Life Saver to remind you that although you may think your dona-tion is just a drop in the ocean, it’s actually a “life saver” to many.

Tag Day is one of the ways the Society of St. Vincent de Paul raises funds to continue its ministry of helping the needy in our own community. Have a safe and happy Fourth of July weekend !
