“The Mission of St. Patrick Parish is to encourage, form and inspire intentional disciples of Jesus Christ.”

Dear Friends in Christ, “GivetoCaesarwhatisCaesar’s,butgivetoGodwhatisGod’s”Today’s gospel offers a re lection on how a disciple of Christ should live in the world. A Christian is not called to be a separatist and or to isolate him or herself. Jesus does show a respect for civil authority. As citizens we obey laws for the common good, and we pay taxes and play our part in the political process. When Jesus says give to God what is God’s, he’s talking about how our faith is meant to impact our involvement in the world. Our core allegiance is with God and the gospel truths that Jesus proclaimed. The challenge for a Christian is to integrate those spiritual truths into our daily lives. In the Gospel of Matthew Jesus challenged his disciples to “be salt of the earth, and a light to the world.” Those are images that point out the importance of engagement and involvement in the world. We’re meant to impact the world with the message of Christ and transform it through our discipleship. What are some practical implications lowing from this gospel? Christians are meant to be engaged in the political process which is the right of every citizen. We should be informed and it is important to vote. It’s important to allow our spiritual/moral principles to guide us in this process. That is quite a challenge because there are so many challenging issues facing us today. A core moral principle for Catholics is the sacredness and dignity of every human life, from the time in the womb all the way until the end of life. These principles inform the Church’s position on issues like abortion, immigration reform, euthanasia and many other life issues. To be an informed, faith- illed citizen is hard work. Jesus never said discipleship would be easy! When Jesus asked whose image was stamped on the coin, they answered “Caesar’s.” Our souls are also stamped with an image. We are created and “stamped” in the image of God. That is our core identity as Christians. We take our earthly citizenship seriously but need to remember that our inal citizenship is with God in heaven. We need a great deal of wisdom to navigate this challenging world with the heart and mind of Christ. We may be tempted to compro-mise on our core moral principles in order to it in. We have a great role model in St. Thomas More who is the patron saint for politicians. King Henry VIII wanted Thomas More to abandon his moral principles and agree with the King’s wayward positions. Thomas wouldn’t do it and it cost him his life. He said, “I die the King’s good servant, but God’s irst.” Our Bishops have produced an excellent work entitled “Faithful Citizenship” which you can ind on their website (United States Catholic Conference of Bishops). It has some helpful re lections on being a faith- illed, faithful citizen in a world that needs the transforming presence of God. The Lord has entrusted that mission to us, may we be strengthened to be salt of the earth and a light to the world. In Christ, Msgr. Steve Knox

We Have Assistance for the Hearing Impaired In the Downtown Church

In addition to the body-pack style assisted listening receivers and headphones that are common in public spaces, we have

integrated an assisted listening hearing loop embedded inside the sanctuary for those with newer hearing aids.

Parishioners or guests who wear hearing aids which are “T-coil Enabled” will seamlessly have the audio transmitted

directly to their hearing aid as soon as they enter the pews on the main floor. If your hearing aid has a T-Coil Switch, be sure it

is turned ON. There are signs at the back of the Narthex and ushers are happy to help those who need assistance.
