EVERY SAINT HAS A PAST;

EVERY SINNER HAS A FUTURE The name of Junípero Serra has come to the fore in the past few months because of his upcoming canonization. He was workaholic. Everybody knew of his determination to get things done while already planning the next thing. He believed in sacrifice expressed through extreme frugality and self-punishment. Everybody also knew about his deep faith in God, Church, and country….and this is precisely what has created controversy. While many rejoice on his upcoming canonization, other remember him as a colonizing oppressor of the Native Americans. Miguel Serra was born in Majorca, Spain, on November 24, 1713, to a poor family. He demonstrated great intellectual capacity by memorizing prayers and writings since he was little. When he was 16, he joined the Franciscans taking on the name of Junípero (after a Franciscan character in a book on the life of Saint Francis of Assisi). He obtained a Doctorate in Philosophy and gained respect by his colleagues and students. He was sent to America when he was 36 and began to found the California missions, in 1769 (at the age of 54), establishing 9 missions in 13 years. According to the California Indian Museum and Cultural Center, through colonization, the natives were obligated to renounce to their religions to be baptized into Christianity. Also, they had to renounce their language, customs, and even foods in order to adopt European styles; and all this done mainly through brutality and death. At Carmel Mission, in California, where Junípero Serra is buried, there are about six thousand indigenous Americans buried under what is now the parking lot, the parish offices, and the school, according to Vicente Medina, a Native American, in an interview with the New York Times early this year. In addition, Ruper Costo, a Cahuilla native, published one of the harshest criticism of Serra and the missionaries in a book called the Missions of California: A Legacy of Genocide. Fellow Jesuit writer, James Martin, summarizes this tension: “Blessed Junípero was a tireless missionary, but he also stands accused of approving some the worst excesses of Spanish colonialism in 17th century California. His legacy is further complicated by the fact that many critics mix the following: first, what the colonists did; second, what Junípero approved; and third, what Junípero himself did. What seems clear, at he very least, is that Junípero consented to the beating of the local population by Spanish colonizers.” (America, February 23, 2015). So what do we do? How could a saintly man (and the patron saint of vocations) like Junípero Serra allow such things to happen and why? There is no such a thing as a perfect human being. The Church declares saints, not perfect beings. This is what makes us similar to the saints: we are all imperfect and sometimes we do not make the best decisions. Humanity is the key to sainthood: despite our limitations and brokenness, God can do wonderful things through us; grace builds upon nature. My best friend says: “every saint has a past; every sinner has a future.” Sainthood is attainable when we fully accept that we are God’s masterpiece and although we have our past, we are meant to have a holy future. CADA PECADOR TIENE UN FUTURO El nombre de Junípero Serra ha sido muy mencionado en los pasados meses debido a su próxima canonización. Él era un trabajador compulsivo. Todos sabían de su determinación para lograr que se hicieran las cosas al mismo tiempo que ya estaba planeando las siguientes. Creía en el sacrificio expresado por medio de la frugalidad extrema y la flagelación. Todos sabían también sobre su profunda fe en Dios, la Iglesia y su patria...y, precisamente, es este aspecto el que ha creado controversia. Mientras muchos se regocijan por que va a ser canonizado, otros ven a Junípero como un colonizador opresor de los nativos americanos. Miguel Serra nació en Mallorca, España, el 24 de noviembre de 1713, de una familia pobre. Desde pequeño demostró gran capacidad intelectual. Cuando tenía 16 años entró en los franciscanos tomando el nombre Junípero (de un personaje franciscano en un libro sobre la vida de san Francisco de Asís). Obtuvo un doctorado en Filosofía y se ganó el respeto de sus colegas y estudiantes. Fue enviado a América cuando tenia 36 años y empezó a fundar las misiones en California, en 1769 (a sus 54 años), estableciendo 9 misiones en 13 años. Según el Museo Indígena y Centro Cultural de California, por medio de la colonización, los nativos fueron obligados a renunciar a su religión para ser bautizados en el cristianismo. También tuvieron que renunciar a su idioma, sus costumbres e incluso sus comidas para adoptar los estilos europeos; y todo esto fue hecho principalmente por medio de la brutalidad y la muerte. En la Misión Carmelo en California, en donde Junípero Serra está enterrado, hay como seis mil indígenas sepultados bajo el estacionamiento, las oficinas y la escuela parroquial, según Vicente Medina, un nativo americano, en una entrevista para el New York Times a inicios de este año. Además, Rúper Costo, un indio Cahuilla, publicó un libro llamado Las misiones de California: un legado de genocidio. El colega escritor jesuita, James Martin, resume esta tensión de la siguiente manera: “El Beato Junípero fue un misionero infatigable, pero también se le acusa de aprobar algunos de los peores excesos del colonialismo español en la California del siglo 17. Su legado se complica aún más por el hecho de que muchos críticos mezclan lo siguiente: primero, lo que hicieron los colonizadores; segundo, lo que Junípero aprobó; y tercero, lo que el mismo Junípero hizo. Lo que parece claro, por lo menos, es que Junípero consintió el apaleamiento de la población local por los colonizadores españoles.” (América, February 23, 2015). Entonces, ¿Qué hacemos? ¿Cómo un hombre santo (y el santo patrón de las vocaciones) como Junípero Serra pudo permitir que todo esto pasara y por que? No existe alguna cosa así como un ser humano perfecto. La Iglesia declara santos, no declara perfectos; y es esto lo que nos asemeja a los santos: todos somos imperfectos y a veces no tomamos las mejores decisiones. La humanidad es la llave a la santidad: a pesar de nuestra limitaciones y quebrantamientos, Dios puede hacer cosas maravillosas por medio de nosotros; la gracia se edifica en la naturaleza. Mi mejor amigo dice: “cada santo tiene su pasado; cada pecador tiene un futuro”. Se puede alcanzar la santidad cuando aceptamos plenamente que somos la obra maestra de Dios y aunque tenemos nuestro pasado, estamos llamados a tener un futuro santo. ¿Cómo lo podemos lograr?
